We report the first detailed descriptive osteocranium of keureling, Tor tambroides (Cypriniformes: Cyprinidae) collected from Tangse River, Indonesia. This study aimed to describe the cranium morphology of keureling (Tor tambroides). Keureling fish used in this study were obtained from the catch of fishers in the Tangse River, District of Pidie, Aceh Province, Indonesia. Stages of research include sample preparation, bone preparations, and identification of cranium nomenclature. For osteological examination, the cranium of the keureling prepared physically and chemically. Based on the results, the cranium of the keureling is divided into two major parts, namely the neurocranium and the facial bone,s including the branchial apparatus. The neurocranium is divided into (anterior to posterior) olfactory (ethmoid), orbital, otic, and occipital regions while the rest divided into oromandibular, opercular series, branchial arch, mandibular arch, and hyoid arch (suspensorium) regions. The neurocranium includes bones in the dermal series of the skull and endochondral bones protecting the brain. At the same time, branchiocranium are those located in the oromandibular part, opercular series, and branchial arch.

Abstract. Hakim L, Abdoellah OS, Parikesit, Withaningsih S. 2020. Impact of agricultural crop type and hunting on bird communities of two villages in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 57-66. Land use change has occurred in the Upper Citarum Watershed over time, converting tropical rain-forest to man-made cash-crop gardens dominate the agricultural landscape, leaving mixed-garden (talun), rice fields and smallholder plantation. This changes species composition, community structure and animal diversity, especially bird species. The objective of this paper was to study bird structure community in rural agricultural landscape in Upper Citarum Watershed. We conducted the survey from February to March 2018. We surveyed birds at 36 point counts (PCs), each PC's surveyed six times for 15 minutes along total 6 km of transects in the agricultural landscape in Sukapura and Resmi Tingal Village, consisting of 12 PCs in mixed-garden, 12 PCs in homegarden and 12 PCs in cash-crop garden. Twenty-nine bird species, 17 families and 1.103 individuals were recorded; 2 species being protected by Indonesian law in all sites, three Javan Island endemics and one species migrant bird species. The insectivorous birds are dominant with 15 species in all land-use types. Passer montanus and Javan munia were the most common birds in all land-use types with 820 of 1.103 individual birds (74,9%) were of two bird species. Mixed-garden had higher bird diversity, species richness, and evenness index than the homegarden and cash-crops garden because of the complexity of vegetation structure and canopy cover stratification. There was a significant decrease in some bird species which in the previous study was dominant to be reduced even to local extinctions such as Oriental White-eye (Zosterops palpebrosus), Crescent-chested Babbler (Stachyris melanothorax) and Western Yellow Wagtail (Motacilla flava). Decreased bamboo-tree garden as Crescent-chested Babbler habitat is suspected to be the cause of declination of this bird population. In addition, unregulated bird hunting is also one of the causes of the declining bird populations, especially birds with market value. Some species such as Oriental White-eye (Zosterops palpebrosus), Sooty-headed Bulbul (Pycnonotus aurigaster), Great Tit (Parus major), Bar-winged prinia (Prinia familiaris), Javan myna (Acridotheres javanicus) and Spotted dove (Streptopelia chinensis) have rapidly decreased population because of bird hunting activities.

Abstract. Hayati I, Hartana A, Djuita NR. 2019. Modeling climatic suitable areas for kedondong (Spondias dulcis) cultivation in central part of Sumatra, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 3608-3618. Kedondong (Spondias dulcis Parkinson) is a fruit plant native to Society Island (Polynesia, Pacific Islands) and widely cultivated in many tropical regions and countries. However, little is known about the occurrences and potential distribution of kedondong as well as its adaptability to different climate particularly in central part Sumatra. This paper is the first to predict the distribution of kedondong in central part of Sumatra in spatially explicit way. The maximum entropy (MaxEnt) model was used to analyze the geographical distribution of kedondong and to map its climatically suitable habitat in central part of Sumatra. The results showed that the MaxEnt model can be used to predict the climatic suitable areas for kedondong cultivation. Notably, the extent of the potentially suitable habitat was significantly larger than the present occurrence of kedondong in central part of Sumatra. The most suitable areas identified in this study covered the west coast of Sumatra and the central part of Sumatra but did not reach the eastern coast. They included parts of Kuantan Singingi, Indragiri Hulu, Indragiri Hilir and Pelalawan of Riau Provinces, Batang Hari of Jambi Provinces, and western part which include Agam, Tanah Datar, West Pasaman, Limapuluh Kota, Padang Pariaman, Padang and South Pesisir of West Sumatra Provinces. The MaxEnt model performed better than random method with an Area Under Curve (AUC) value of 0.981. Although kedondong is still largely ignored by scientific community and its potential has not been deeply explored, the findings of this study imply that it is very important to develop kedondong germplasm resources which have adaptability to extreme climate in central part of Sumatra.

Review: Current status of ethnobiological studies in Merauke, Papua, Indonesia: A perspective of biological-cultural diversity conservation. Biodiversitas 20: 3455-3466. Ethnobiology is a scientific study that examines the dynamic relationship between humans, biota and the environment. In this dynamic relationship, holistic notions that integrate humans and their cultural and biological diversity give more responsibility to ethnobiological studies. This research approach stimulates insights to integrate scientific research with awareness of political and ecological issues, loss of biological resources, including indigenous peoples' struggles over land and resources, identity degradation due to loss of culture and language. Ethnobiological studies undertaken in Merauke, Papua between 2000 and 2017 were reviewed from the perspective of biological-cultural diversity conservation. The aims and results of such published ethnobiological studies were analyzed and we found the failure of such studies in accounting for linguistic diversity in the region while documenting ethnobiological knowledge. Most of such ethnobiological studies were oriented on the topic of economic botany, focusing on recording the potential uses of plants utilized by each ethnic group in the Marind language-culture area of Merauke District, especially those belonging to the domain of medicinal plants. Some studies also used artificial community terminology to treat several ethnic groups as uniform and did not mention what language used for the local names of plants in their reports. Future ethnobiological research in the area would benefit from: (i) adopting a cognitive ethnobiology orientation; (ii) applying appropriate ethnolinguistics standards of research to document the languages; and (iii) using a quantitative approach to analyze the distribution of ethnobiological knowledge within the communities studied. The latter approach is especially important given the extreme and rapid changes of the environment in this region.

Short Communication: Restoration of seagrass Enhalus acoroides using a combination of generative and vegetative techniques. Biodiversitas 20: 3358-3363. Seagrass areas have been declining in extent worldwide, with associated loss in seagrass ecosystem functions and services. Seagrass restoration is important to mitigate, halt and reverse such declines and their consequences. Generative propagation has benefits in terms of genetic biodiversity, however, survival of seagrass seedlings has often been poor especially in high energy environments. Terrestrial restoration often uses shade trees to protect vulnerable seedlings. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of a similar approach in the marine environment, using adult plants to protect seedlings of the tropical seagrass Enhalus acoroides (L.f.) Royle. Enhalus seeds taken from a donor bed were germinated and grown into seedlings, then planted in a location with high hydrodynamic exposure at three different densities (high, medium, and low). Adult Enhalus transplants were co-planted to provide three levels of protection: fifty (high), ten (medium), and none (no protection). Results showed that high-density seedling co-planting with high protection from adult transplants had significantly (p< 0.05) higher six-month survival rate compared to the other treatments. Our results indicate that, even in high energy environments, co-planting seedlings with adult transplants may combine the advantages of generative and vegetative propagation methods, promoting greater short-term effectiveness in terms of seedlings survival and growth in the restored seagrass meadows.

Abstract. Imang N. 2020. Short Communication: Adoption level of indigenous communities to agricultural technology: problem and adaptive solutions in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 1160-1164. The economic and cultural background of the indigenous people of the Dayak Borneo was traditional shifting cultivation, hunting, and gathering. Since the 1980s, Indonesian central government promoted Resettlement Program by relocating them in down rivers to encourage and to improve their agricultural and economic life. By living in downriver with limited farming areas, they, of course, need more products of agriculture and therefore government promoted agricultural extension. The objectives of the study are to: assess adoption level of two indigenous Dayak communities on agricultural technology, assess the causes of problems on adoption of agricultural technology, and seek adaptive strategy in implementing agricultural technology. Data were collected by interviewing 54 respondents that were selected randomly and descriptive qualitative approach was used for data analysis. Some important findings were: (i) adoption level of 60% i.e. Low level and 40% i.e. middle level in both villages; (ii) the low level of adoption was caused by some factors, such as: low performance of the extension officers which was caused by the lack support from government, and the background of the farmers; farmers with low education background need visual media to understand the extension and to see the evidence of the new technology; (iii) adaptive strategies to improve agricultural extension level such as: government should support the extension officers with appropriate visual and material support such as LCD projector, portable generator, appropriate training and communication skill that suitable with socio-cultural background of the respondents. The extension officers also need to understand the cultural background of the respondents. Practical implication is that the government can develop more typical effective method of extension for indigenous communities with low educational background and traditional way of agriculture. Theoretical implications, of course, are to provide specific further information for research related to agricultural extension.

Abstract. Wartono, Wiyono S, Syukur M, Giyanto, Lestari P. 2019. Resistance of Capsicum annuum genotypes against various isolates of Phytophthora capsici from Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 3723-3730. Phytophthora capsici Leonian is one of the pathogenic oomycetes that can reduce chilli production worldwide. In this study, Indonesian local chilli genotypes were evaluated for their resistance to P.capsici on chilli in Java, under controlled conditions. P. capsici used in this study consisted of four isolates derived from chilli plants in Java Island. The chilli genotypes tested were 38 local chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) originated from Indonesia and 3 introduced C. annuum. Inoculation was carried out by drenching 5 ml suspension of zoospore (1 x 104) on the growing medium suitable for the oomycetes around the plant. Disease symptom was measured at 21 days after inoculation. Salicylic acid and b-1.3-glucanase analyses were conducted to 7-week old plant with specific interval. Molecular characterization to complement disease assay was carried out using SCAR primers (OpD04,717-F/D04,717-R). Significant differences were found in genotypes, isolates, and interactions between chilli genotypes x P. capsici isolates. Four tested isolates had different levels of virulence ranging from moderate (CpnsCK1, KdrRM3, WnsbCk) to high (WnsbCK2). The chilli genotypes revealed high partial resistance to P. capsici, as demonstrated by six genotypes resistant to CpnsCK1, two genotypes to KdrRM3, and one genotype resistant to WnsbCK1. Resistance of one of chilli pepper, Ungara was positively associated with an increase of salicylic acid and b-1.3-glucanase. There is no association between the SCAR marker with resistance of chilli to P. capsici suggested these pathogens from Java are probably controlled by another locus which is not detected by this SCAR marker.

Short Communication: Application of bacteriocin from Lactobacillus plantarum SRCM 1 004 34 strain isolated from okara as a natural preservative in beef sausage. Biodiversitas 21: 2240-2243. Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) can be found in food and most of the LAB have beneficial effects for humans as potential probiotics. LAB isolated from okara (soy milk pulp) produces antimicrobial compounds called bacteriocins which can be used as natural preservatives in sausages. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of this bacteriocin from LAB as a natural preservative in sausages. The bacteriocin was isolated from Lactobacillus plantarum SRCM 1 004 34 strain isolated from Okara. Completely Randomized Design (CRD) was used in 4 X 4 factorial pattern by three replicates The first factor was the percentage addition of bacteriocin (B): 0% (B0), 0.3% (B1), 0.6% (B2) and 0.9% v/b (B3). The second factor was the length of sausage storage time at 4°C (L): 0 days (L0), 4 days (L1), 8 days (L2) and 12 days (L3). The observed variables were moisture content, protein, fat, pH, total aerobic bacteria, and sausage fatty acid profile. The results showed that the content of protein, fat, and the bacterial count was significantly influenced by the interaction of the percentage addition of bacteriocin and storage time. pH was significantly affected by bacteriocin dose and storage time but was not affected by the interaction of other factors. The moisture content of the sausage was significantly affected by storage time. The results of this study showed that sausages treated with 0.9% bacteriocin (B3) with a maximum storage time of 12 in the refrigerator was still safe to be consumed.

Abstract. Rochaddi B, Zainuri M, Sabdono A. 2019. Short Communication: Diversity of Chlorpyrifos-degrading bacteria isolated from shallow aquifer of East Java Coastal Settlements, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 3662-3666. Wastes from inhabited regions, factories and maricultural practices through movement and penetration enter to groundwaters. A study was undertaken to determine the diversity of Chlorpyrifos-degrading bacteria isolated from a shallow aquifer of East Java coastal settlements. Fifteen of 116 bacterial strains isolated from shallow aquifer samples of 12 household wells were selected due to their capability of degrading Chlorpyrifos herbicide. These isolates were different in the ability of Chlorpyrifos degradation. They utilize Chlorpyrifos as the source of carbon and energy for their growth. Their initial degradation at 50?mg?L?1 concentration within the first 4 days ranged between 26.81 and 70.12 %. The 16S rRNA gene sequence analyses indicated that the majority of the isolates belonged to members of Bacillus genera. These bacterial strains were Bacillus cereus (seven strains) and Bacillus paramycoides (four strains). Besides, three strains were identified as Bacillus subtilis and one strain as Bacillus thuringiensis. Bacillus cereus strain LCA1.1 was selected for further study on kinetic growth and Chlorpyrifos utilization. These bacterial strains have a great potential utility for the bioremediation of shallow aquifer of coastal settlement contaminated with Chlorpyrifos pesticides.

Population of phosphate solubilizing bacteria in the liquid organic fertilizer created from palm oil bunches and pineapple rhizome. Biodiversitas 20: 3315-3321. Palm oil bunches and pineapple rhizomes are abundant in Indonesia, especially in Lampung Province due to widespread agro-industrial company and they are potential to be used as sources for liquid organic fertilizer. This study was aimed to reveal microbial population within liquid organic fertilizer (LF) which was developed from palm oil bunches (PB) and pineapple rhizome (PR) and their role as phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB). The capability to solubilize phosphate was recorded from the clear zone area around the bacterial colony which was cultivated on Pikovskaya’s agar medium. The LF was prepared in three kinds of conditions, namely aerobic, anaerobic, and facultative an aerobic. Isolation was performed every 3 days until 24 days after incubations. The results showed that microbial population in the LF from PR was significantly higher than those developed from PB. Totally, 791 bacterial isolates were obtained from the LF; 490 isolates were achieved from PR (153 isolates from aerobic, 188 isolates from facultative anaerobic, 149 from anaerobic conditions) and 301 isolates were collected from PB (96 isolates from aerobic, 112 isolates from facultative anaerobic, 93 isolates from anaerobic conditions). In the case of isolates that were gained from PB, 166 isolates (55.15%) showed capability to degrade phosphate and 135 isolates (44.85%) did not show any capability as PSB. As for isolates obtained from PR, 269 isolates (54.90%) had capability to solubilize phosphate, meanwhile, the other 221 isolates (45.10%) did not show any capability to solubilize phosphate. Among166 isolates of PSB from PB, 60 isolates had very low capability, 55 isolates had low capability, 34 isolates had medium capability, 10 isolates had high capability and only 7 isolates had very high capability. Meanwhile, from 269 isolates of PSB obtained from PR, 135 isolates had very low capability to solubilize phosphate, 84 isolates had low capability to solubilize phosphate, 32 had medium capability to solubilize phosphate, 14 isolates had high capability to solubilize phosphate and 4 isolates produced very high capability as PSB. In total, 11 chosen isolates were selected from LF developed from both PB (7 isolates) and PR (4 isolates). Therefore, palm oil bunches and pineapple rhizomes contained PSB that can be used as LF.
