Traditional medicinal plants and their utilization by local communities around Lambung Mangkurat Education Forests, South Kalimantan, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 306-314. Lambung Mangkurat Education Forests (LMEF) is a unique forest area with high plant diversity, including medicinal plants. This study aimed to document the list of natural medicinal plant species in LMEF and analyze the community perceptions on utilizing them. Exploratory surveys collected data through field observation and interviews with people living in villages around LMEF. The inventory of medicinal plants was conducted by line transect method with 1,000 m long and 20 m wide. Meanwhile, indigenous communities' description of medicinal plant utilization was explored using an interview process on fifty respondents. The results showed that 56 medicinal plant species were naturally distributed in LMEF. Most plants have habitus as trees, wherein local communities commonly use their leaves as traditional medicine. Local people generally applied the extraction process using hot water to obtain the benefit of these plants. Interestingly, more than 70% of respondents prefer traditional medicine to drugs. These findings indicated that the sustainable management of LMEF can support the vital role of forest ecosystems for people's health.

Abstract. El-Ghwas DE. 2021. Short Communication: Characterization and biological synthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles by new strain of Bacillus foraminis. Biodiversitas 23: 548-553. The production of ZnO Nanoparticles (ZnONPs) has gained a lot of interest because of its wide antibacterial and eco-friendly activity. This work was performed for the biosynthesis of ZnONPs using isolated bacteria strains. A new bacterial strain isolated from farm soil in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, was identified by molecular identification using 16S ribosomal RNA. The isolated sequence had the highest similarity (99 %) with Bacillus foraminis. On the other hand, the appearance of white precipitate at the end of incubation time confirms the production of ZnONPs. Also, UV, TEM, and FTIR were used to investigate the stability and structure of ZnONPs. The absorbance of ZnONPs was measured at 386 nm in a UV experiment. TEM result revealed that the particles were polydisperse and usually spherical, with maximum particles in the 5.40 - 6.79 nm range. In addition, FTIR confirms the reduction of zinc ions by bacteria. This is the first report on the biosynthesis of ZnONPs by B. foraminis.

Abstract. Amalia R, Rejeki S, Widowati LL, Ariyati RW. 2021. The growth of tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) and its dynamics of water quality in integrated culture. Biodiversitas 23: 593-600. Intensive shrimp culture with high density will have an impact on environmental problems. One of them is the accumulation of organic materials. Integrated Multi-trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) is an alternative effort to reduce the environmental impact of aquaculture activities, which can help maintain the balance of the ecosystem. Seaweed and shellfish in the culture system can improve environmental quality. Therefore, it can assist in optimizing friendly environmental shrimp culture. This study aimed to find out the growth of tiger shrimp and the role of seaweed and blood cockles and its dynamics of water quality. Twelve fiberglass tanks containing 800 L of brackish water and filled with ± 10 cm of clay sediment were arranged randomly. This study used 4 treatments and 3 replications, including treatment A (tiger shrimp), B (tiger shrimp+seaweed), C (tiger shrimp+blood cockle), and D (tiger shrimp+seaweed+blood cockle). The data of tiger shrimp growth was monitored weekly, while the growth of blood cockle and seaweed was collected at the end of the study. The water quality parameters such as DO, pH, temperature, and salinity were monitored daily. Meanwhile, the data of Total organic matter (TOM), total ammonia nitrogen (TAN), NO2, and NO3 were measured weekly. The result of the research showed that the highest specific growth rate (SGR) was treatment D (5.75±0.03% day-1). While the highest SR value was treatment B 90.33±0.58%. However, survival rate (SR) on treatment B did not have a significant difference (p<0.05) with treatment C and D. In general, there was significant interaction (p<0.01) in organic waste parameters (TOM, TAN, NO2, and NO3) for all treatments. In removal rate (RR), treatment D was more effective in reducing TOM (19,20%). Meanwhile, the highest level of TAN reduction was achieved by treatment C (50%). In addition, the highest reduction in nitrite and nitrate variables was in treatment D (40% and 33,33%). In contrast, treatment A got a negative removal rate in all parameters.

Short Communication: Variation of panicle branching structure of new high yielding and local rice varieties from farmer’s field. Biodiversitas 23: 1337-1345. The number of grains per panicle is one of the important factors determining the yields in rice. This study aimed to capture the panicle branching pattern of different rice varieties grown in different environments with various planting systems. The assessment was conducted in West Java during the planting season of 2020. The panicle of new high-yielding and local rice varieties was collected from 23 various rice-growing sites. The results revealed that the variance due to genotype, environment, and interaction between genotype and environment were significant for panicle branching trait. Two rice genotypes, such as Padjadjaran and Inpari 45 were stable and did not show any change when they were grown in the various environments with different agronomical practices. Whereas, Inpari 32, Cakrabuana, and Inpari IR Nutri Zinc showed different performances at different growing sites and planting systems. The characters of PL, NPB, NSB, PBL, NGPB, TLPB, TLSB, SbperPB, TNGSB and TFG showed positive and significant correlation with the number of total grains per panicle.

Biodiversitas 23: 375-380. Several gobioid species have amphidromous migration patterns; adult gobies spawn in their freshwater habitat, embryos are carried by river currents to reach the sea where they undergo a planktonic phase lasting several months before migrating to estuarine and then freshwater (predominantly riverine) environments to grow and breed. Around the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia, these migrating postlarvae have various local names; in West Sulawesi they are collectively known as penja, a popular fisheries commodity, but data on their migration patterns are limited. This study aimed to determine penja migration seasons and document some aspects of the penja fisheries in West Sulawesi. The research was conducted in the lower reaches of five rivers: the Mapilli, Mandar, Teppo, Palipi, and Lariang rivers. Penja samples were collected from fishermen's catches using several types of fishing gear such as seser (scoop nets), dariq or bunde (push nets), panesser (casting net) and other traditional or artisanal fishing equipment. Samples were also collected from traditional markets. The postlarvae were measured and grouped based on morphological characters. The results showed temporal differences in migration patterns between the five study sites, while external morphology indicated the presence of several species in migrating penja schools. During the rainy season, populations with a more diverse morphology were found than during the dry season.

Short Communication: Morphological diversity and the addition of golden snail protein: Its effect on flavonoid content on Echinacea purpurea. Biodiversitas 23: 62-66. Echinacea purpurea is a subtropical medicinal plant that contains flavonoids. Flavonoids function as antioxidants and immunomodulators. However, information on the method to increase flavonoid content in E. purpurea is still limited. The golden snail protein increases flavonoid content. The purpose of this study was to determine the best accession and optimal concentration of golden snail protein on biomass production and flavonoid content in E. purpurea. The study used a Factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD). The first factor was three accessions of E. purpurea (A1, A2, A3); the second factor was 5 levels of the addition of golden snail protein (0 mL/L/week, 10 mL/L/week, 20 mL/L/week, 30 mL/L/week, and 40 mL /L/week). There were differences in morphological characters of three E. purpurea accessions, i.e., stem and the shape of the flower crown. Accession 2 had the highest flavonoid content except for the 10 mL/L/week treatment. The highest increase in flavonoid content in three accessions was obtained in the treatment of 10 mL/L/week gold snail protein by 19% flavonoid content compared to control treatment (0 mL/L/week). The concentration of 0 mL/l/week or control had the lowest flavonoid content.

Abstract. Ramlee A, Suhaimi H, Rasdi NW. 2021. Diversity and abundance of plankton in different habitat zonation of Papan River, Lake Kenyir, Malaysia. Biodiversitas 23: 212-221. Lake Kenyir is the largest artificial lake in Malaysia, yet there is limited information regarding the lake’s ecology. This study aimed to determine the diversity and abundance of phytoplankton and zooplankton in various habitat ecosystems along the Papan River, Lake Kenyir. Three distinct sampling points were chosen based on the diverse habitat conditions, namely sampling point A (high water current area), sampling point B (shallow and muddy area) and sampling point C (minimum water current area). Samples were collected horizontally using a 30µm plankton net with two distinct towing methods: boat and hand towing to specific areas. The result showed that all sampling points had low chlorophyll-a concentrations ranging between 10 and 20 g/ml, indicating that no algae bloom had occurred. Bacillariophyta were found to have the highest distribution of phytoplankton division in all of the stations (50.96%). The other division discovered was Chlorophyta (29.62%), followed by Charophyta (19.43%). Additionally, 140 individual zooplankton species were discovered across all sampling locations. The phylum Rotifera is the most dominant in terms of species distribution (60.00 %), followed by Arthropoda (31.43%), Ciliophora (7.14%), and Rhizopoda (0.71%). The Shannon diversity index, evenness, and species richness measurements at sampling point A, B, and C revealed a range of index values due to variation in plankton species due to interaction and habitat conditions. The variation in planktonic abundance in the Papan River was attributed to their habitat preferences due to the freshwater lake's ecosystem's different zones and conditions.

Tree species diversity of Pegunungan Bintang, Papua, Indonesia as potency of wood supply. Biodiversitas 22: 5645-5655. The tropical rainforest is a primary global concern in many aspects. Therefore, this study aimed to describe the tree diversity in Pegunungan Bintang Forest, Papua, Indonesia. There are 10 dominant species from seedlings, saplings, poles, and trees, indicating the timber production potency. This study set systematic plots in Murkim and Teiraplu Sub-districts to collect taxonomic information, diameter, and clear bole height samples. The results showed that the forest was categorized as a tropical mixed due to diverse tree species. The leading plant families included Moraceae, Myrtaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Lauraceae, and Anacardiaceae, with various seedlings, saplings, poles, and trees. The potency of timber was reflected through sample distribution using the reverse J-shaped curve, identifying the merchantable trees with larger and smaller diameters as re-established. However, timber utilization management requires silvicultural treatments using selective logging by diameter limit and logging cycle for forest sustainability.

Larvicidal activity evaluation of the chemical compounds isolated from n-hexane extract of Derris elliptica root against the Temephos-susceptible strain of Aedes aegypti larvae. Biodiversitas 23: 757-764. Aedes aegypti is the main vector of Dengue, Chikungunya, and Zika diseases. Temephos resistance of this species has hampered vector control efforts worldwide. Studies proved that Derris elliptica extracts effectively controlled Aedes larvae, so the active compound needed to be isolated. This study evaluated the larvicidal activity of the chemical compounds isolated from n-hexane fractions of Tuba roots against the temephos-susceptible Ae. aegypti larvae. Six isolates were obtained from three of the seven n-hexane fractions. Three levels of concentration of each isolate were formulated for a preliminary bioassay test, and resulted in the two most active compounds, isolates 3 and 6. The final bioassay test results indicated that isolate 3 was more active than isolate 6 with LC50 and LC90 after 24 hours of exposure were 1.607 and 7.399 ppm, and after 48 hours of exposure were 0.926 and 3.206 ppm respectively. Isolate 6 also had high larvicidal activity after 48 hours of exposure, with LC50 and LC90 were 1.056 and 4.647 ppm. Further studies need to be carried out to determine the chemical structures and toxicity mechanisms of the bioactive compounds.

Abstract. Nandika D, Arinana, Salman ABA, Putri JY. 2021. Morphological and molecular features of stain fungi infecting rubberwood (Hevea brasiliensis). Biodiversitas 22: 5408-5416. In the southeast Asia region, particularly Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia, rubberwood (Hevea brasiliensis Muell. Arg.) has been widely used as a raw material in various industries particularly furniture manufacturing. However, rubberwood is highly susceptible to fungal attack due to its lack of heartwood formation. A laboratory study was conducted to investigate the morphological and molecular features of stain fungi infecting rubberwood. A total of five isolates of stain fungi belonging to three genera were identified based on internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and morphological features. All isolates belong to Order Eurotiales with each genus being Paecilomyces, Aspergillus, and Penicillium. The highest growth rate on wood samples was shown by Aspergillus chevalieri section Aspergillus and Paecilomyces maximus or P. formosus with values of 86.57% and 86.22%, respectively. All of the stain fungi genera caused varied level of discoloration on wood samples with dark grayish and very dark grayish as the more frequent color found. Quantitatively, the highest discoloration was shown by A. chevalieri section Aspergillus (?E = 27.60) and P. maximus or P. formosus (?E = 16.69). These species can be considered as newly stain fungi recorded infecting rubberwood in Indonesia. In addition, discoloration caused by these two stain fungi was the worst.
