Kalimantan Island has many species of stingless bees that are widespread throughout the province. However, their morphology, morphometry, and nest structure characteristics have not been documented comprehensively. This paper described the morphological characters, morphometric measurements, nest entrance, and brood cell characteristics of stingless bees from meliponiculture in South Kalimantan, Indonesia. Ten stingless bee species were identified based on their morphological features: Tetragonula laeviceps (Smith, 1857), T. fuscobalteata (Cameron, 1908), T. drescheri (Schwarz, 1939), T. melanocephala (Gribodo, 1893), T. biroi (Friese, 1898), Homotrigona apicalis (Smith, 1857), H. canifrons (Smith, 1857), Heterotrigona itama (Cockerell, 1918), Geniotrigona thoracica (Smith, 1857), and Lepidotrigona terminata (Smith, 1878). Principal component analysis was performed to identify the grouping characters and thus determine their diagnostic characters. Furthermore, the shape, diameter, length, ornamentation, and color of the nest entrance and the arrangement, cells, and color of brood cells were observed. This study is the first to report high variations in the type of entrance opening and arrangement of brood cells for stingless bee species, which are abundant in South Kalimantan.

Genetic diversity analysis and phylogeography of Osteochilus spilurus (Cyprinidae: Labeoninae) from Bangka, Belitung, and Kalimantan Islands using Cytochrome b gene. Biodiversitas 23: 4738-4746. The Sundaland fish species, Osteochilus spilurus is only utilized commercially in the Belitung Islands and has yet to be domesticated. This species can characterize freshwater fish phylogeography because have a minimum of human influence. This study aimed to analyze the genetic diversity and phylogeography of O. spilurus from the Bangka, Belitung, and Kalimantan Islands using Cytochrome b gene. Twenty fish samples were collected from the Sebangau and Kapuas Rivers in Kalimantan, the Lenggang River in Belitung Island, and the Lebak River in Bangka Island. Forward LA-cyp and reverse HA-cyp primers were used for amplification Cytochrome b gene. Mega 10.0 applications were used to construct of the phylogenetic tree. The phylogeographic analysis uses a comparative phylogenetic tree approach with geographical history. The cytochrome b gene showed variations in the nucleotides of O. spilurus from the three islands. Phylogeography of O. spilurus showed that there are two different clades with intraspecific variation according to a geographic area with bootstrap values of 99-100%. One clade contains fish samples from Bangka and Belitung islands, while the other clade comes from Kalimantan island. The formation of the Karimata Strait (between Bangka-Belitung and Kalimantan Islands) and the pattern of paleo rivers are predicted to influence the disparity.

Biodiversitas 22: 5417-5424. The Dayak Jangkang tribe has local knowledge about the use of medicinal plants that have been going on for a long time. Unfortunately, the local knowledge of the Dayak Jangkang tribe is currently threatened to disappear because it is delivered orally; there are no written documents and a wasteful lifestyle. The study aimed to document traditional medicinal plants that are utilized by the Dayak Jangkang tribe. The research approach used was qualitative descriptive using the field survey. The study interviewed three informants categories, i.e., the main informant (one customary chairman), key informant (one village head), and recommended informant (eight people who were knowledgeable about medicinal plants). The data were obtained through in-depth interviews and participatory observations. Data analysis used qualitative descriptive. The study got 40 plants that are used for traditional medicine with Zingiberaceae as the most used family. The parts of plants used by the Dayak Jangkang tribe for treatments were roots, bulbs, rhizomes, stems, bark, banana hump, fruit, fruit skins, leaves, fruit, and seeds. The mode of preparation is still considered simple.

Combined use of Spirulina platensis and Saccharomyces cerevisiae: Implication on growth, blood profile and intestinal morphology and bacteria of the Indonesian crossbred chickens. Biodiversitas 23: 160-165. The effects of Spirulina platensis and Saccharomyces cerevisiae on poultry growth and health have long been known. However, no research has been conducted on the combined use of these substances on the Indonesian crossbred chicken (ICC). This study evaluated how the combined use of S. platensis and S. cerevisiae affected ICC growth, blood profile, and intestinal ecology. A total of 288 ICC were separated into three groups, including CONT (basic diet), SP (diet with 0.3% S. platensis), and SPSC (diet with 0.3% S. platensis and 0.2% S. cerevisiae). Blood and intestinal content and segments were taken at week 9, while growth was determined weekly. SP had greater (p<0.05) body weight than CONT, but did not differ from SPSC. In SP, ileal coliform counts were lower (p=0.07) than in CONT. SPSC had lower (p=0.07) caecal Enterobacteriaceae counts than other groups. Blood profile, intestinal morphology, organ weight, and carcass traits did not vary (p>0.05) across the ICC. In conclusion, dietary supplementation of S. platensis improved growth performance and bacterial population of the ICC.

Biological aspects of brown-marbled grouper (Epinephelus fuscoguttatus) from Taka Bonerate National Park, District of Selayar Islands, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 1140-1153. Knowledge regarding biological aspects of fishes such as the brown-marbled grouper can provide important information for fisheries management. This research was conducted from February 2020 to February 2021 to determine the length-weight relationship, condition factor, gonad maturity stage and spawning pattern, size at first maturity and feeding habits of brown-marbled groupers in Taka Bonerate National Park. The sample caught comprised 1042 brown-marbled groupers with a total length (TL) range of 23-97 cm and a weight range of 0.5-17.6 kg. The length-weight equation was W: 0.0001?L2.5955 (R²: 0.8935). For male brown-marbled grouper (n: 569), TL range was 47-97 cm, weight range 1.65-17.60 kg, regression equation W: 0.0002?L2.4731 (R²: 0.7716), condition factor range 0.56-2.36 (mean 1.236±1.019), and length at first maturity 66.34 cm. For female brown-marbled grouper (n: 473) TL range was 23-73 cm (mean 46.84 cm), weight range 0.50-6.6 kg (mean 2.23 kg), regression equation W: 0.0007?L2.1057 (R²: 0.7416), condition factor range 0.55-2.17 (mean 1.225±1.018), and length at first maturity 45.43 cm. The growth pattern was negative allometric with regression coefficient b < 3 for both sexes separately and combined. The majority of both male and female fish caught had mature gonads with indications of a partial spawning pattern. The fish diet was carnivorous, predominantly piscivorous (74%), with gut contents comprising 64% unidentified fish and 26% unidentified decapod crustaceans. Over-exploitation of fish can cause negative impacts on populations, so the relationship between length and weight, condition factors and maturity level gonad of fish can be used in fisheries management.

Zingiberaceae, known as ginger family, is a family of monocotyledon belonging to the Zingiberales order. This family is widely used its rhizome for various purposes, especially as medicinal plant. The morphological characters can be used to help the identification of species in the field of plant taxonomy. The aim of study was to characterize the morphological traits, both vegetative and generative organs, of Zingiberaceae from Serang District, Banten. Plant specimens were collected from Serang District, Banten, including in Pabuaran, Gunungsari, and Ciomas sub-district using purposive sampling. The examination of morphological characters data was conducted through observation and documentation. There were 13 species/varieties of Zingiberaceae collected from the studied area, i.e. Amomum compactum, Alpinia purpurata, Curcuma xanthorrhiza, C. longa, C. heyneana, C. mangga, C. aeruginosa, Kaempferia rotunda, Etlingera elatior, Zingiber zerumbet, Z. officinale, Zingiber officinale var. rubrum, and Z. cassumunar, in which the generative organs were found only in eight species/cultivars of them. Based on the morphological characters of vegetative organs, thirteen species/cultivars had a similarity distance coefficient from 37% to 94%; while based on the morphological characters of both vegetative and generative organs, the eight species/cultivars had a similarity distance coefficient from 31% to 94%. The results showed that using the characters of vegetative organs data were still able to provide consistent grouping results with the generative organs.

Anaerobic fungi are one of the microbes that have an important role in rumen fiber degradation because they can produce cellulase enzymes and penetrate feed particles. Nevertheless, few studies were performed to test the potential of anaerobic fungi in Indonesia. Therefore, the present study was carried out to evaluate the impact of the enrichment process on pH value, the zoospores population, NH3 (ammonia) concentration, and VFA (Volatile Fatty Acid) proportion. In addition, this research was also performed to isolate anaerobic fungi from buffalo rumen and identify their morphological characteristics. The enrichment stage of anaerobic fungi was carried out using the Hungate method. Results showed that the population of fungi zoospores, pH value, ammonia concentration, the proportion of acetate, and total VFA were significantly affected by the incubation time (P<0.01). In addition, Caecomyces, Neocallimastix, and Piromyces were rumen anaerobic fungi isolated from buffalo rumen with different morphological characteristics. It can be concluded that the incubation time increased the zoospore population, the concentration of NH3, acetate proportion, and total VFA but decreased media's pH value.

Abstract. Mildawati, Sobir, Sulistijorini, Chikmawati T. 2021. Diversity, distribution and ecology of Davallia in Sumatra (Indonesia) and the nearby small islands. Biodiversitas 23: 33-42. Davallia is an epiphytic fern genus that shows high morphological variations in many characters. This genus is widely distributed in the tropics and subtropic areas. The diversity of Davallia has not been explored and recorded in many regions, including in Sumatra Island and its surrounding small islands. Therefore, this research aimed to study the diversity of Davallia species in Sumatra and the nearby small islands based on morphological variation, as well as to investigate their distribution and ecology. Samples were collected from Kerinci Seblat National Park (NP), Bukit Tiga Puluh NP, Siberut NP, Sipora Island, North Pagai Island and South Pagai, Bukit Barisan Grand Forest Park, and Bukit Barisan Selatan NP. In total, 369 specimen sheets (i.e.145 specimens from field explorations and 224 specimens from Herbarium Bogoriense collections) were examined its morphological characters. The results showed that as many as 13 species of Davallia were recorded in Sumatra and the nearby small islands. The species found are D. angustata Wall., D. corniculata T. Moore, D. denticulata (Burm. f.) Kuhn var. denticulata, D. divaricata Blume, D. heterophylla Sm., D. hymenophylloides (Bl.) Kuhn, D. parvula Wall., D. pectinata Sm., D. pentaphylla Blume, D. repens Kuhn, D. solida (G.Forst.) Sw. var. solida, D. trichomanoides Blume var. lorranii (Hance) Holttum, D. trichomanoides Blume var. trichomanoides, and D. triphylla Hook. Ten of which were new records for this location. There were 12 spesies found in Sumatra Island except D. parvula Wall. and 11 species found on the small islands around Sumatra except for D. corniculata T. Moore and D. divaricata Blume. Davallia denticulata (Burm. F.) Kuhn var. denticulata and D. solida (G.Forst.) Sw. var. solida had the largest number of specimens found. Almost all species had a random distribution pattern at altitudes of 1000-1500 m above sea level.

Diversity of Gyrinops versteegii from several agarwood plantation on Lombok Island (Indonesia) as raw material of Gyrinops tea. Biodiversitas 23: 178-186. The purpose of this research is to examine the diversity of Gyrinops versteegii as a raw material of agarwood Gyrinops tea based on morphology, phytochemical, and molecular characters. G. versteegii samples were taken from 5 agarwood plantation on Lombok Island: Lingsar, Rarung, Mataram, Kekait, and Pejaring. Variation of G. versteegii stem, leaves, and fruit was the morphology character observed in this study. Qualitative phytochemical screening, quantitative tannin concentration, and the hedonic score of Gyrinops tea were the essential phytochemical character in this study. DNA fingerprinting and RAPD analysis were the molecular characters of this study. All of those characters were used in numeric-phenetics analysis to construct a dendrogram. MVSP program with UPGMA algorithm as clustering method and Simple Matching Coefficient for similarity analysis was used to construct dendrogram. The result has shown variation topology of dendrogram based on morphology, phytochemical, molecular, and combination character. However, all dendrograms had the same number of clusters and cluster members. G. versteegii kekait and G. versteegii Pejaring were grouped to cluster 1 while G. versteegii Rarung and G. versteegii Mataram were grouped to cluster 2. G. versteegii Lingsar was grouped later on the node after cluster 1 or 2. It could be concluded that G. versteegii from Lombok Island Plantation could be divided into three different cluster groups based on the variation of morphology, chemical, and molecular characters.

Abstract. Widayanti R, Nugroho HA, Megarani DV, Widiasih DA, Pakpahan S. 2021. Revealing Spanish mackerel’s diversity in Indonesian through local commodities in the fish market. Biodiversitas 23: 624-630. The objective of this study was to explore the diversity of Spanish mackerel in Indonesian Archipelago based on commodities offered in local fish markets. Eighteen specimens were collected from six different fish markets around the Indonesian archipelago. According to Wallace Line, the cytochrome B sequence was used as a genetic marker to reveal diversity from West Indonesia to East Indonesia. Gene amplification was performed using the polymerase chain reaction followed by Sanger sequencing. Based on DNA sequence analysis, we identified three species of Spanish Mackerel available at various fish markets around the region. The first group is related to Scomberomorus commerson, which was sold in both Western and Eastern Indonesian fish markets; the second group is related to Scomberomorus semifasciatus, which was sold in Eastern Indonesian fish markets; and the third group is related to Scomberomorus koreanus, which was sold in Western Indonesian fish markets. The genetic differences amongst Spanish Mackerel populations ranged from 0 to 17% and the average evolutionary divergence in the overall populations was determined to be 4%. The data collected can be utilized to initiate map mackerel diversity based on CYT B sequence throughout the Indonesian Archipelago, as well as for further study and application in the identification of foods produced from mackerel.
