Characteristics of physiology, phenology, and drought susceptibility index of two varieties of job’s tears under water deficit stress. Biodiversitas 23: 381-387. Job’s tears or hanjeli (Coix lacryma-jobi L.) is a functional food crop with less popularly cultivated and longer life cycle than paddy and maize, so that it is potentially exposed to drought stress in the dry season in tropical areas. This study aims to evaluate the physiology, phenology, and drought susceptibility index lack of both Job’s tears varieties under water deficit stress. The study was conducted in quantitative method, by using 2 populations of ma-yuen and stenocarpa varieties which were treated with two levels of watering treatment during the vegetative phase (6 to 12 weeks after sowing), i.e. every day watering and every three days watering. Observations were made on physiological traits, phenology, and drought susceptibility index. The results showed that water deficit decreased stomatal conductance and chlorophyll content, but it could increase electrolyte leakage and proline content. Increasing proline content had a significant correlation with crop yields improvement. Flowering time was prolonged as the effect of drought stress in both varieties. Based on drought susceptibility index, stenocarpa was more tolerant than ma-yuen. However, some farmers might still cultivate the ma-yuen due to the soft seed shell character, therefore, this study finding could be used as a basis for developing further plant irrigation techniques for sensitive variety amid a prolonged dry season.

Small-scale fishery effects are often overlooked by fishery and environmental managers. This study aimed to assess the impact of traditional cockle fishery on its population in the northeastern coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. The study took place from January 2018 to December 2018. Samples were obtained from Ujung Perling in Aceh Timur Regency, which is the only fishing ground exploited at present. Parameters estimated in this study include growth, mortalities, and exploitation levels. Analysis revealed that the average length was 50.03 mm, with the maximum shell length captured is 78 mm. Von Bertalanffy K-coefficient is 2.3 with a lifespan that can reach 3 years. Natural mortality is 2.27 year-1, while fishing mortality is 6.74 year-1. The exploitation rate in this study is 0.75. Growth parameters indicate that Ujung Perling is a suitable habitat for the cockle to grow, but mortalities and exploitation parameters suggest overexploitation is taking place in the area. To keep the population at a safe level, exploitation needs to be lessened to 33% from the current level.

Abstract. Saleh AR, Gusli S, Ala A, Neswati R, Sudewi S. 2021. Tree density impact on growth, roots length density, and yield in agroforestry based cocoa. Biodiversitas 23: 496-506. Cocoa-based agroforestry systems using langsat trees as shade is aimed to maximize the absorptions of solar energy, water, and nutrients, and increase income sources for farmers. Limited information about interspecific interactions between cocoa and langsat which is needed to improve the performance of agroforestry systems is a challenging idea. We studied the relationship characteristics of cocoa trees as a present shaded effect in the agroforestry system. Compared agroforestry systems were based on ages, namely young and old cocoa agroforestry or YCAF and OCAF, and monoculture systems (Mono) regardless of plant age. On above stony soil, we observed root length density (RLD) of cocoa and langsat fine roots, from under cocoa canopy to three distance levels from the cocoa stem (i.e. at a distance 0.4 m, 1.2 m and, 1.7 m), and four distance depths for all systems (i.e. at a depth 0-10 cm, 10-20 cm, 20-30 cm and, 30-40 cm). Stem diameter, basal area, canopy cover, yield cocoa beans, and convertible products non-cocoa were equivalent to the price of cocoa beans by tree equivalent yield (TEY) formula. Cocoa RLD in the Mono system did not differ from RLD-cocoa in the OCAF system, but both significantly differed with RLD-cocoa in the YCAF system. Shade trees increased tree density in both agroforestry systems, triggering competition in the canopy for sunlight. Expansion of langsat roots that spread closer to the cocoa trunk increased competition for nutrients and water. Both cocoa and langsat roots overlapped, exploring the same area. The yield of cocoa beans harvested by farmers from the YCAF and OCAF systems decreased by 50%. However, the langsat tree and several other species were accounted for 50% of the TEY in the agroforestry system, thereby adding a source of income to farmers is equivalent to the yield of cocoa beans from a monoculture system.

Genetic parameters for resin production of Pinus merkusii progeny test collected from three landraces in Banyumas Barat Forest District, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 2010-2016. Pinus merkusii Jungh. et de Vriese is a native pine species in Indonesia that is used in the production of essential and economically valued products, such as wood and resin. The resin productivity can be increased significantly via breeding programs. The objective of this study is to analyze the genetic parameters of resin productivity based on the progeny performance in three landrace seeds sources, namely, Sumedang seedling seed orchards (SSOs), Jember SSO, and East Java seed source. The drilling method was used for tapping trees, and then resin production was measured individually. Additional data on height, diameter, and branch-free height were also collected. Based on family variance component analysis data of resin production, it was noted that Sumedang SSO, Jember SSO, and East Java seed sources have relatively high genetic variations of 4.48%, 15.77%, and 3.80%, respectively. These values were then followed by a moderate family heritability value for all of them (0.451-0.551). A high value of individual heritability estimates was obtained for Jember SSO (0.658), and moderate values were found for Sumedang SSO (0.182) and East Java seed sources (0.158), respectively. The estimated genetic gains were calculated for resin production using selection intensity levels at 10%, 25%, and 50%. The result indicated that the Jember SSO landrace obtained the highest genetic gains at 17.55%, 12.73%, and 7.99%, for the above-mentioned intensity levels, respectively. In contrast, the lowest one was found in the Sumedang SSO landrace.

Abstract. Irawati W, Pinontoan R, Mouretta B, Yuwono T. 2021. The potential of copper-resistant bacteria Acinetobacter sp. strain CN5 in decolorizing dyes. Biodiversitas 23: 680-686. Bacteria with multi-resistance to copper and dyes may be employed in bioremediation of copper and dye waste more effectively than physical or chemical remediation. This study aims at determining the effect of the addition of various textile dyes and copper on the growth of Acinetobacter sp. CN5 and its ability to decolorize dyes. The dye resistance test was carried out by inoculating bacterial isolates into Luria Bertani media containing 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, 350, 400, 450, and 500 ppm dyes. The twelve dyes used in the test were methylene blue, malachite green, congo red, mordant orange, reactive black, direct yellow, basic fuchsine, reactive orange, dispersion orange, remazol red, wantex yellow, and wantex red. The decolorization activity was analyzed by spectrophotometry at a 300-900 nm wavelength. The study results demonstrated that bacteria thrived in media containing 50 ppm of all dyes, except malachite green dye. Acinetobacter sp. CN5 was found to be resistant to up to 500 ppm methylene blue, basic fuchsine, and wantex red and resistant to congo red at 450 ppm. Acinetobacter sp. CN5 was also able to decolorize methylene blue, congo red, basic fuchsine, and red wantex by 57.64%, 53.17%, 91.37%, and 67.50%, respectively. The addition of 5 mM CuSO4 to the medium increased the ability of Acinetobacter sp. CN5 to decolorize the congo red from 57.64% to 82.58%.

Abstract. Leo S, Supriatna J, Mizuno K, Margules C. 2021. Indigenous Dayak Iban customary perspective on sustainable forest management, West Kalimantan, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 424-435. Borneo is the third-largest island in the world, is rich in biodiversity and has diverse unique ecosystems. However, deforestation and land tenure conflicts continue to threaten the indigenous people who rely on forest resources for their livelihoods and well-being. This study aimed to identify the ecosystem services and the value of customary forest resources, identify local wildlife species, and document the traditional knowledge that the Iban indigenous community of West Kalimantan use to manage their customary forest. We collected relevant data using Toolkit for Ecosystem Service Site-based Assessment (TESSA), in-depth interviews, and wildlife surveys. The customary forest provides significant ecosystem services, mainly carbon sequestration (exceeds US$ 52 million/year), water-related services (exceeds US$ 21 million/year), and the 52 wildlife species recorded in the customary forest. Forest resources are managed successfully by the community through traditional knowledge and customary laws passed down for generations. The integration of local and expert knowledge and involvement from all related stakeholders would boost sustainable forest management and enhance the economic benefits and livelihoods of the community. Following current trends, recognizing customary forest and appropriate sustainable forest management could effectively tackle deforestation and land tenure conflicts in Borneo. Further studies should be considered to develop specific activities on managing the forest sustainably that the community can implement and evaluate.

Mott on gold mine tailings in Muara Bungo, Jambi, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 478-485. The increase of heavy metal pollution in the soil results from human activities such as gold mining, which impacts human and environmental health problems. Phytoremediation is an environmentally friendly, inexpensive, and efficient solution to overcome environmental damage caused by heavy metal contamination. Inoculation of AMF in dwarf Napier grass can reduce the level of metal contaminants in soil and subsequently its absorption in plant tissue. This study investigates the effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on dwarf Napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum cv. Mott) plant growth and heavy metal remediation rates. The experiment was a completely randomized design with 4 levels of AMF inoculation (0, 5, 10, and 15 g/pot) with 5 repetitions. After eight weeks of potting experiments, shoot and root biomass, plant growth, heavy metal content in potting media were assessed. The results revealed that AMF inoculation of 10 g/pot exhibited a higher growth yield of dwarf Napier grass compared to other treatments (plant height (p<0.01), leaf length (P<0.01), leaf width (P<0.01), stem diameter (P<0.01) and plant fresh weight (P<0.01)), but had no significant effect on the number of leaves and number of shoots (P>0.05). AMF (10 g/pot) significantly affected root growth of dwarf Napier grass (root length (P<0.01), number of roots (P<0.05), and root fresh weight (P<0.01)). The results also showed that AMF increased the uptake of Al, Co, Cr, and Fe significantly in the growing media (Al (P<0.01), Co (P<0.05), Cr (P<0.01), Fe (P<0.05) but no significant effect on Pb (P>0.05). This study concluded that AMF effectively increased the growth of dwarf Napier grass and reduced heavy metal contaminants on gold mines tailings.

Biodiversitas 23: 793-800. Plant growth regulators (PGRs) have been used in agricultural practicesto regulate various processes, such as germination, vegetative growth, reproduction, maturation, leaf senescence and post-harvest. Seaweed extract as natural PGRs source containsauxin, cytokines, and gibberellins. Although PGRs have been used for decades, the effects of these compounds on the production of secondary metabolites, proteins and related gene-expressionare not yetwell knownin some perennial crops.To study those,treatments consist of trunk injection of oil palm trees with biostimulant that contain PGRs from seaweed extract. Effects of treatments compared were biostimulant (B), biostimulant with activator for oil accumulation (BA) and control (C). The results indicated that the biostimulant treatments affected ACCase Biotin Carboxylase and HMG-CoA genes expression ratio andwere maximum at4 weeks after treatments (WAT) for biostimulant with activators treatments and 8 WAT for biostimulants without activator. Effect of biostimulants treatments in inducing the gene expression was not significant after 8 WAT. Moreover samples with addition biostimulant in 1 and 7 had the highest values ??ofthe gibberellin (GID) gene expression. Oil accumulation showed increase in 4 WAT dan had optimum level in 8 WATbecause of activators addition, especially increased of palmitic and linoleic acid.

Mapping distribution of Capsicum annum var. chinense in Tana Toraja and surrounding districts (Indonesia) based on fruit morphology. Biodiversitas 23: 982-991. Katokkon pepper (Capsicum annum var. chinense) is one of the many Capsicum genetic resources still cultivated in small farms and home gardens in Tana Toraja, North Toraja, Enrekang and Mamasa districts of Indonesia. This study was conducted to identify genetic diversity of C. annum var. chinense pepper based on fruit characteristics as morphological markers in the endemic area. The study location was determined by purposive sampling. Morphological characterization was carried out by observing quantitative and qualitative characters. Results showed that C. annum var. chinense was widely distributed in the districts of Tana Toraja 47% (14 sub-districts, 17 villages), North Toraja 34% (11 sub-districts, 14 villages), Enrekang 12% (3 sub-districts, 5 villages), and Mamasa 7% (2 sub-districts, 6 villages). Cluster analysis based on quantitative characters of fruit morphology from 51 accessions led to 5 dendrogram clusters with 90% similarity level. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) results had a cumulative diversity value of 75.913%. The color characteristic of fruit before ripening was light green, which turned red when mature. Cross-sections of the fruits were slightly corrugated. Fruits were pendant, and shapes were blocky. Fruit shape at pedicel attachment was truncated. Fruit shapes at the blossom end were blunt. In all the areas explored, only four common genotypes, i.e. Limbong Sangpolo or Local, Leatung 1, Leatung 2, and Jumbo were found.

Isolation and identification of potential host probiotic bacteria from Malaysian mahseer, Tor tambroides for aquaculture practices. Biodiversitas 23: 5423-5430. The digestive tract has been revealed as a reservoir of potential probiotics derived from the host. The goal of this study was to isolate, identify, and characterize putative host-associated probiotic bacteria (HAPs) from the digestive tract of Malaysian mahseer Tor tambroides. To evaluate potential T. tambroides HAPs, in-vitro digestive enzyme activity (such as a cellulolytic, proteolytic, and lipolytic activity) and antibacterial activity against two fish pathogens (Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Aeromonas hydrophila) were utilized. Thirty-seven isolates with digestive enzyme activities were tested for their ability to inhibit pathogenic bacteria growth using an agar well-diffusion assay. Three isolates displayed in-vitro suppression of pathogenic bacteria, with two strains (KT03 and KM07) inhibiting the growth of V. parahaemolyticus and one strain (KT27) suppressing the proliferation of both harmful bacteria (V. parahaemolyticus and A. hydrophila). Strains KT03 and KM07 exhibited the most resemblance to Enterococcus faecalis (strains 2674 and FC11682, respectively) based on 16S rRNA sequences, whereas KT27 had a 97% similarity to Aeromonas sp. A8-29. The study’s findings provide valuable data on the prospective use of these three isolates (KT03, KT27, and KM07) as potential HAPs for better understanding their physiological activities, such as growth and disease resistance on T. tambroides.
