Wetland and riparian ecosystem is an important migratory stopover for land and water birds in the East Asian - Australasian Flyway. Understanding relationship patterns between bird communities and environmental factors at multi-spatial scales within a landscape context could contribute to the conservation and management of bird biodiversity in wetland ecosystems. The landscape metrics index is critical in revealing the relationship between the composition of bird communities and habitats at both local and landscape scales. This study aims to determine the effect of the environmental factors at different designated spatial scales on the composition of local bird communities in terms of species and feeding guilds. Our study conducted a bird survey using 227-point transects along 40 tracks across different land cover types surrounding the Mun-Chi River confluence. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) was used to quantify the association between bird communities, represented by species and feeding guilds, and environmental factors with the integration of multilevel habitat metrics. From the results, the CCA showed patterns of the community-environmental association at multiple scales of patch, class, and landscape characteristics with the proportional explanation of 54% and 61.82% for the composition of species and feeding guilds, respectively. The results indicated the premise that the majority of bird species respond to the habitat at the local scale. Large forest patches can maintain migratory and resident bird species. Moreover, most avian groups were arranged primarily in a large forest core area, forest area, and Shrubland PA. The results confirmed existing information on feeding guilds. The prediction map of the principal component of avian species composition was created from the association with the drivers of land use, including crops, perennial farmland, and water body on the edge of forests. Therefore, wetland management must be done at both local and landscape scales to preserve suitable avian habitats.

Abstract. Hidayah Z, Rachman HA, As-Syakur AR. 2022. Mapping of mangrove forest and carbon stock estimation of east coast Surabaya, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 4826-4837. The mangrove forests on Surabaya's east coast are an important protected area, providing habitat for a variety of marine organisms and water birds. This area is also vital for carbon storage and sequestration. The purpose of this research is to determine the changes in mangrove areas over the last 20 years and to calculate the amount of carbon stored in these mangrove forests. Changes in the area of mangrove forests and Normalized Difference Vegetation Indices (NDVI) were determined using Landsat-7 in 2000 and Landsat-8 in 2020. The vegetative carbon stock of mangrove stands was calculated using allometric measurements. The study results reveal that the mangrove forest area has increased significantly from 257.13 ha in 2000 to 753.48 ha in 2020. The results of regression models also show that NDVI has a significant influence on aboveground biomass (AGB), as indicated by the coefficient of determination (R2) = 0.7 (F test, df = 28, p-value < 0.05). The estimated aboveground and belowground carbon stock is 46.35 ± 13.65 ton C ha-1 and 13.65 ± 6.74 ton C ha-1 respectively. Accordingly, it is observed that the mangrove forest of East Coast Surabaya can sequester at least a total of 192.72 tons CO2 ha-1 in above and belowground biomass.

Pematang Matik Coastal waters are coastal areas that have a major role in the life of various fish species. Research on fish diversity in coastal waters is very important in order to gain a better understanding on the fish diversity in coastal areas such as North Sumatra, including Indonesia. The objective of this study was to initiate an inventory of fish species, their abundance and assessment of its biodiversity based on Shannon's diversity index (H'), and evenness index (E) in Pematang Matik coastal waters. The research was conducted from September to October 2021 at four stations with different human activities by the coastal community. Fish samples were taken using fishing nets that were installed for 12 hr with two replications. In this study, 21 species of fish from 19 families were identified. The highest abundance of fish was obtained from the Mugilidae family, namely Crenimugil crenilabis and Liza macrolepis. The fish diversity index obtained was 2.19-2.95, while the uniformity index obtained was 0.719-0.968. The values ??of H' and E at Station 4 (absent from any human interferences) have higher values ??than the other three stations. The diversity, as expressed in H' value in four research stations, indicates that the coastline has a high diversity of fish species.

Abstract. Lestari YA, Verawaty M, Herlinda S. 2022. Development of Spodoptera frugiperda fed on young maize plant’s fresh leaves inoculated with endophytic fungi from South Sumatra, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 5056-5063. The endophytic entomopathogenic fungi are needed to control the Spodoptera frugiperda larvae hiding inside the maize plants. This research aimed to assess the effect of young maize inoculated with endophytic fungi on the development of S. frugiperda. The fungal isolates used for the bioassay were Beauveria bassiana JgSPK isolate (GenBank acc. no. MZ356494), B. bassiana JgCrJr isolate (GenBank acc. no. MZ356497), and Metarhizium anisopliae CaTpPga isolates (GenBank acc. no. MZ242073). Beauveria bassiana (JgSPK and JgCrJr isolates) and M. anisopliae (CaTpPga isolate) colonized young maize plant significantly reduced the pupae and adult emergence, adult longevity, eggs laid, and viable eggs of S. frugiperda. The fungi also significantly enhanced larval mortality compared to non-colonized ones. The larval mortality caused by M. anisopliae CaTpPga isolate (57.67%) was highest among other treatments but not significantly different from those treated with B. bassiana JgSPK isolate (51.33%). Furthermore, the developmental time (eggs, larvae, pupae stages, and lifespan) of S. frugiperda fed on leaves colonized with endophytic fungi significantly increased compared to non-colonized ones. So, B. bassiana and M. anisopliae inoculated as seed treatments caused negative effects on the development of S. frugiperda. These findings highlight the potential of endophytic B. bassiana and M. anisopliae from South Sumatra to protect maize against S. frugiperda.

Biodiversitas 23: 6164-6170. Domesticated dog populations have grown throughout Indonesia, notably in Bitung City. Dogs are frequently kept as home guardians and reside with their owners. Dogs are typically attacked by ectoparasites, parasites that adhere to the skin's surface and potentially spread the disease microorganisms to humans, animals, and the environment. As a specific host, ticks are frequently found in dogs. This research aims to identify and analyze the molecular character bacterial of Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks in Bitung City. A hypervariable region of 16S rRNA called V3-V4 was selected for the DNA barcode area. Dogs' ticks have been collected from several areas in Bitung. The microbes inside the digestive tract were analyzed using genomic DNA with a gSYNC DNA extraction kit, and PCR amplification using KOD FX Neo and MyTaq HS red mix. At First Base Singapore, gel electrophoresis and sequencing were carried out. The collected sequencing data were analyzed using MEGA X and the BLAST, connected online with the NCBI's GenBank. The nine distinct bacteria were identified inside the digestive tract of ticks. Pseudomonas stutzeri (35%), Brevundimonas sp. (21%), and Aquamicrobium lusatiense (17%) were the pathogens that were most frequently found. These results enhance knowledge of the pathogen microbes that may impact either humans or animals.

Chromatography analysis, in vitro antioxidant and antibacterial activities of essential oil of Artemisia herba-alba Asso of Boussaâda, Algeria. Biodiversitas 23: 4424-4431. Artemisia herba-alba Asso (Asteraceae family) is widespread in the semi-arid and arid steppes of North Africa. This plant is used for traditional treatment. The present study aims to investigate the chemical composition, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of A. herba-alba essential oil found in southwest Algeria (Boussaâda region). Artemisia herba-alba essential oil was obtained by hydrodistillation method, and its chemical composition was identified by using GC/MS analysis. In addition, the antioxidant activity of the extracted essential oil was determined using the DPPH assay. The antimicrobial activity of the essential oil was determined by the agar disc diffusion method. The essential oil extracted from the aboveground portions by hydrodistillation was analyzed by GC/MS. 38 components were identified, making up 69.37% of the oil, the most important of which is thujone (9.875%), camphor (3.762%), cis-p-menthadien-1-of (3.572%), and isoborneol (2.334%). The observed IC50 values of the DPPH assay were 7.31 ± 0.088 mg/mL. On the other hand, this oil was active against all strains tested, this activity varied from 12.77 ± 0.510 mm on Listeria innocua CIP 74915. These results demonstrate that the plant tested could be a potential source of natural antioxidants and antimicrobial agents.

Biodiversitas 23: 6227-6237. Medicinal plants have long been used by indigenous communities, including Gayo people in Aceh, Indonesia. The conservation and sustainable utilization of medicinal plants can be integrated with ecotourism activities. Kedah Rainforest Lodges is an ecotourism area in the Protected Forest area of Forest Management Unit (FMU) Region V Aceh, Indonesia, which is an important source of medicinal plants, clean water and nature tourism. However, biodiversity in the area is threatened by excessive human activity, including the long-standing tradition of Gayo people using medicinal plants. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate medicinal plants used by the local community living around Kedah Rainforest Lodges using an ethnobotanical approach and to identify a strategy for the conservation of medicinal plants using strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) analysis. A combination of field observations, interviews, documentation and focus group discussions were employed for data collection. The result of the ethnobotanical study identified 44 species belonging to 31 families of medicinal plants used by Gayo people in the studied area. Asteraceae is the family with the largest number of medicinal plant species, while herbs are the most common habitus of the medicinal plants and leaves are the most used plant part. Based on SWOT analysis, there are several strategies to conserve medicinal plants in Kedah Rainforest Lodges, including (i) the rehabilitation of degraded areas through the enrichment of medicinal plants to create living pharmacies; (i) the development of facilities to support medicinal plants ecotourism; and (iii) partnerships with related stakeholders to obtain funding and enhance the capacity of the area manager and staff.

Recorded and predicted butterflies in the Padang Bindu Karst, South Sumatra, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 24: 1057-1082. Padang Bindu Karst is one of the national cultural heritages in South Sumatra that has not been explored further for its faunal diversity, including the butterflies. Therefore, a preliminary survey of butterfly diversity of karst fauna outside the cave was carried out in the area for eight days. The aim was to analyze the butterfly diversity at an initial step, especially in the four main cave areas in the area, namely Harimau Cave, Silabe Cave, Putri Cave, and Candi Cave. Vegetation data based on their utility as host plants and/or nectar plants were also recorded to predict the number of butterfly species available in the area. There were 59 species of 157 individuals recorded, Eurema alithabeing the most abundant and followed by Junonia hedonia. From this preliminary survey, butterflies in the Padang Bindu Karst accounted for 35.75% of the total butterflies predicted to be there and 20.2% of the total butterflies recorded in South Sumatra. At least 12 species have not been recorded in South Sumatra, one of which is a rare species, namely Mahathala ariadeva, found in the secondary forest. Predicting the occurrence of butterflies based on the approach of host plants and nectar plants, as well as abiotic factors, is a butterfly conservation strategy that needs to be supported by long-term observations.

Borobudur Temple is a building whose reliefs depict the Buddhist scriptures in the form of pictures, reliefs, and statues. Each relief contains a certain message and interpretation that not all visitors can understand the storyline when they observe, especially only at a glance. The Karmawibhangga relief is found at the Borobudur Temple's lowest section. The lowest relief represents the hustle and bustle of worldly life, consisting of 160 panels, all of which have different images from one panel to another. Based on the existing literature results, an iconographic approach, reliefs in the form of paddy, is used to analyze the interpretation of the Karmawibhangga relief 65 on paddy to make it easier for people who desire to acquire information about it to symbolize prosperity. Paddy is depicted with plump grains, ready to harvest and being guarded by several people from rats. This study can be used as a reference in the future regarding the visualization description of paddy in the Karmawibhangga relief for future researchers.

Abstract. Navia ZI, Adnan, Harmawan T, Suwardi AB. 2022. Ethnobotanical study of wild medicinal plants in Serbajadi protected forest of East Aceh District, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 4959-4970. The Serbajadi protected forest of East Aceh District has high biodiversity including medicinal plants which have been utilized by the community as traditional medicine. However, their knowledge of ethnobotanical uses of medicinal plants is threatened due to the lack of written records and the rapid socio-cultural changes as a consequence of economic development. Therefore, this study aims to study wild medicinal plants and traditional knowledge in the Serbajadi protected forest, East Aceh District, Indonesia. This study used a combination of data collection methods, namely field surveys, plant collections, and community interviews. The snowball sampling technique was used to select 320 interviewees. The results showed that local people use 88 different wild medicinal plant species from 78 genera and 46 families to treat 32 different diseases. The most common ailments to cure are fever, cough, and diarrhea. Ageratum conyzoides is the most known medicinal plant species with a relative frequency citation index of 0.97, while Acorus calamus is the most commonly used medicinal plant in the local community with a use value index of 0.99. Furthermore, locals identified leaves (75%) as the most commonly used plant part and decoction (55%) as the most common method of administering traditional medicine. The elders know more about medicinal plants than the younger generation, indicating that traditional knowledge is eroding as generations pass. In order to ensure the sustainability of medicinal plants and the preservation of traditional knowledge in the future, the initiative to preserve medicinal plants must be increased, particularly among the younger generation.
