Biodiversitas 24: 3872-3880. Not all soybean varieties grow optimally when intercropped with maize. Previously, we identified seven varieties (i.e., "Demas 1", Dena 1", "Dena 2", "Derap 1", "Devon 1", "Devon 2", and "Wilis") and two (i.e., "Dega 1" and "Mahameru") as tolerant and intolerant of intercropping based on selection indices and yield. This research aims to determine the morphophysiological and yield traits of tolerant and intolerant soybean groups intercropped with maize. The study used a randomized complete block design with three blocks as replications, and conducted from October 2019 to February 2020. Results showed that light intensity in the intercropping system had decreased by 19.91% relative to that in the monoculture system at 7 weeks after planting. The tolerant group displayed significant gains in seed weight per plant (143.66%), total biomass (50.04%), harvest index (53.33%), total number of pods and seeds per plant (119.39% and 128.86%), leaf nitrogen uptake and content (20.83% and 6.44%), chlorophyll-a:b ratio (7.20%), and stem diameter (7.65%) than the intolerant group. Correlation analysis revealed that leaf nitrogen content showed the highest correlation and significantly contributed to seed weight per plant in the tolerant and intolerant groups. Seed weight in the tolerant group was mainly affected by morphological (total biomass and harvest index), physiological (leaf nitrogen content), and yield components (number of pods), whereas that in the intolerant group was influenced only by physiological parameters (nitrogen content). Nitrogen content was considered suitable as a selection indicator for determining the seed yield of intercropped soybean varieties. Furthermore, using soybean tolerant groups for intercropping may be a solution to increase soybean production in Indonesia.

Amplicon-based sequencing revealed potential microbiologically influenced corrosion in the interim storage for spent fuel of RSG-GAS, Serpong, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 24: 5391-5398. Interim storage of spent fuel (ISSF) corrosion can negatively impact nuclear power plant maintenance, specifically concerning safety, financial costs, and regulatory compliance. Besides chemical reactions, microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) also primarily occurred. Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) plays a significant role in the development of MIC. The quantitative of MIC research has never been conducted in the ISSF - Multipurpose nuclear reactor of G.A. Siwabessy (RSG-GAS). So, this study aims to monitor the potential MIC development in the ISSF of RSG-GAS pool and canal through bacterial diversity analysis using total plate count (TPC) and metagenomic approach. TPC results showed that SRB was identified in the canal of ISSF but not in the pool site. However, metagenomics analysis revealed higher diversity measures in the pool than in the canal sites. Staphylococcus sp. was the most abundant species in both sites, with a relative abundance greater than 85%. The number of SRB and MIC-related bacteria was higher in the canal than in the pool, both from TPC and metagenomic analysis. Several SRB taxa were identified, such as Desulfobulbus mediterraneus, Desulfobulbus sp., Desulfofustis sp., Desulfovibrio sp., and Truepera sp. The potential MIC development also strengthens by diversity-based metabolic pathway prediction, which mainly displayed sulfur oxidation and sulfate reduction pathways in the canal system.

Abstract. Azzahra PR, Sumarga E, Sholihah A. 2023. Mangrove ecotourism development at Karimunjawa National Park, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 24: 4457-4468. Karimunjawa National Park (KJNP) is a marine conservation area with a high potential for developing mangrove ecotourism in Indonesia. Several essential aspects should be adequately understood to support mangrove ecotourism in KJNP, including the potential of tourism attractions, the ecological carrying capacity for tourism, the potential support from stakeholders, and the best strategies based on the latest conditions. This study aimed to (i) identify and analyze the potential of mangrove ecotourism attractions in KJNP, (ii) analyze the carrying capacity for mangrove ecotourism, (iii) analyze the level of influence and interest of stakeholders, and (iv) determine strategies for developing mangrove ecotourism in KJNP. The ecotourism attraction potentials were analyzed using a modified version of the assessment of Natural Tourism Attraction Objects (NTAO) (Objek Daya Tarik Wisata Alam – ODTWA). The carrying capacity was analyzed using the Area Carrying Capacity concept. The influence and interest level of stakeholders were analyzed using the economic characteristics of the community and the stakeholder grids. The strategy for developing mangrove ecotourism was determined using Strength, Weakness, Opportunity, Threat (SWOT), and Quantitative Strategic Planning Matrix (QSPM) analyses. The results showed that mangrove ecotourism in KJNP is highly potential and feasible to be developed based on the assessment of 15 criteria of NTAO with a carrying capacity of ca. 104 visitors/day. About 96% of the community agrees to support the development of mangrove ecotourism in KJNP. Karimunjawa National Park Office and the local community were identified as essential players from the eight recognizable stakeholders. Seven main strategies were formulated for developing mangrove ecotourism in KJNP, with the improvement of cooperation among stakeholders in developing facilities and tourist attractions and promoting mangrove ecotourism was perceived as the most urgent strategy to be implemented.

Identification of bovine Eimeria species pathogenic using PCR ITS-1 in Indonesia. Biodiversitas 24: 4684-4689. Bovine eimeriosis is one of Indonesia's cattle's most significant health issues caused by the intestinal protozoan parasite Eimeria spp. Eimeria spp., E. zuernii, E. alabamensis, E. aburnensis, and E. bovis are recognized as most pathogenic since they cause clinical symptoms. This study aimed to identify pathogenic Eimeria spp. and explore their evolutionary relationships using the molecular marker, the internal transcribed spacer-1 (ITS-1). A total of 171 fecal samples were collected from the provinces of Banten, Lampung, and West Java, and 43 (25.1%) were infected with oocysts of Eimeria spp. by microscopic examination. The positive samples were further confirmed for different Eimeria species by amplifying and sequencing the ITS-1 gene. After editing and alignment, the sequences were considered for analyses, and the phylogenetic analysis confirmed four species of Eimeria such as E. bovis 39 (22.8%), E. zuernii 23 (13.5%), E. alabamensis 7 (4.09%), and E. aburnensis 25 (14.6%). In this study, several Eimeria species were related to overseas species; therefore, additional risk analysis is needed to control the spread of bovine eimeriosis. It is possible to learn important details regarding the ecology and population genetics of Eimeria spp. by employing sequencing and phylogenetic analysis to categorize all positive samples of the eimeriosis as pathogenic Eimeria spp.

Biodiversitas 24: 4829-4836. This study aimed to determine the effect of application time and surfactants on the efficacy of Lecanicillium lecanii strain Probolinggo in controlling the soybean pod-sucking bug Riptortus linearis in a field test. The study was conducted in a randomized block design consisting of two treatments, namely time of application (7 am, 10 am, 1 pm, and 4 pm) and type of surfactant (alkyl glycerol phthalate and alkylaryl polyglycol ether). Application time at 4 pm showed 93% highest mortality of R. linearis than the other treatments, with the lowest number of punctures (86 punctures) and the highest soybean dry weight (11.38 g), which were not significantly different from the application time of 10 am. The efficacy of L. lecanii increased by 74.3% after adding alkylaryl polyglycol ether. The efficacy of L. lecanii with alkyl glycerol phthalate was not significantly different from the control. In the parameters of the number of seed punctures and dry weight of soybeans, the surfactant treatment gave similar results to the control. The results showed that in the field test, the highest efficacy of L. lecanii against R. linearis occurred at 4 pm with alkil aril polyglycol ether surfactant.

Abstract. Khongthawie S, Hasin S, Ponpinij S, Pinkaew N. 2023. Ground-dwelling ant diversity in forests and agricultural land use at Sakaerat Biosphere Reserve, Thailand. Biodiversitas 24: 5937-5946. Ants play essential roles in terrestrial ecosystems, for example, soil engineers, seed dispersers, biological control agents, and indicators to monitor environmental stress and disturbance. This research aimed to study the diversity and community composition of ground-dwelling ants at Sakaerat Biosphere Reserve and its surrounding areas. Pitfall traps collected ground-dwelling ants from three habitat types: agricultural areas, dry dipterocarp forests, and dry evergreen forests; the environmental factor in this work was soil temperature. The results revealed that 109 ant species in 40 genera belonging to 8 subfamilies. Notably, the dry dipterocarp forest exhibited the highest ant diversity with 71 species, followed by the dry evergreen forest and agricultural area with 62 and 54 species, respectively. Overall, the present study reveals that soil temperature and vegetation significantly influenced ant species composition; ant species being more likely to be found in forests than in agricultural areas, and species classified as uncommon groups based on occurrence were the largest group in every study site. Besides, the information on ant species obtained from this work had the potential to be used as bioindicator species for ecosystem management and human impacts on forests.

Abstract. Nikmatullah A, Nairfana I, Dewi SM, Sarjan M. 2023. Morphological diversity of Indian jujube (Ziziphus mauritiana) in Sumbawa Island, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 24: 4597-4608. Ziziphus mauritiana Lam. (Indian jujube or Bidara) is an evergreen shrub or small tree tolerant to drought, salinity, and high-temperature stress with various ethnobotanical and ecological values. However, minimal information is available on its diversity in Indonesia. The current study aims to assess the morphological diversity of Z. mauritiana accessions collected from 18 locations in Sumbawa Island, Indonesia. The plant's qualitative and quantitative morphological attributes were collected, including size, L/W ratio and color of leaf and fruit, length, and occurrence of spine and stem surface. The results revealed significant differences in some observed characters among the accessions. Petiole length varied from 0.6 to 1.4 cm, leaf length ranged from 2.9 to 5.0 cm, leaf width ranged from 2.6 to 4.2 cm, and leaf L/W ratio was 1.07 to 1.46. All samples of Z. mauritiana in Sumbawa Island had a spine that occurred evenly in every node, ranging from 0.1 to 1.0 cm. Most accessions had single spinal per node except two accessions, which had double horn-shaped spines in each node. The quantitative characters for fruits also varied, either orbicular or oblong. The fruit length ranged from 1.2 to 1.9 cm, the fruit width varied between 1.1 to 1.8 cm, and the fruit L/W ratio was between 1.0 and 1.2. There were also morphological differences in leaf color, fruit color, shape, and taste (sweet, sour, or bitter). The finding suggests some degree of morphological diversity of Z. mauritiana in Sumbawa, as shown by quantitative and qualitative attributes of the leaf, thorn, and fruit.

Santos NRS, Magat MB, Mondragon MV, Cao EP, Santos DMC. 2023. Genetic profiling of locally registered Philippine coffee using molecular markers linked to resistance against diseases and pests. Biodiversitas 24: 4136-4144. Coffee is a major commodity in the Philippines, but diseases and pests have hampered local production. Natural resistance could help increase production by eradicating infestation or lessening the symptoms of infection and minimizing the need for chemical control. Hence, this study aims to screen local Coffea arabica varieties, whose beans are prized for their superior taste and aroma, using genetic markers. These markers are linked to resistance against Coffee Leaf Rust (CLR, caused by Hemileia vastatrix), Coffee Berry Disease (CBD, caused by Colletotrichum kahawae), and Root Knot Nematode (RKN, Meloidogynespp.). The Arabica samples were obtained from the Bureau of Plant Industry in Baguio City, Benguet, a main distributor of coffee seedlings to farmers. C. canephora and C. liberica trees from Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite, were used as control samples. Results reveal that the registered NSIC-2008-Cf-A-05 (Red Bourbon) Arabica tree contains a unique haplotype in a region of chromosome 3. This region has been linked to the SH3 gene, which confers resistance against CLR, a promising result for infested areas. However, all Arabica samples are inferred to be susceptible to CBD and RKN. Hence, NSIC-2008-Cf-A-05 is a potential source for resistance genes specifically against CLR in future breeding programs.

Abstract. Kulsum NNS, Susandarini R. 2023. Diversity of wild edible fruits in the agroforestry area of Cigalontang Village, Tasikmalaya, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 24: 4161-4167. Wild edible fruits are non-timber forest products that support the nutritional adequacy of communities around the forest. Scientific inventory and documentation of wild fruit plant diversity are important to reveal local resources' potential in supporting local communities food security. A study on wild edible fruits in the agroforestry area in Cigalontang Village aimed to document the diversity of fruit plant species and traditional knowledge of the community on food plants available from the forest. This study used semi-structured interviews with 63 respondents and guided fieldwork to identify natural habitats and collect specimens of wild edible fruits. The results showed that people of Cigalontang Village commonly consumed 49 wild edible fruit species belonging to 27 families. Zingiberaceae and Moraceae were two families with the highest number of wild edible fruit species mentioned by the respondents. All the fruits were consumed raw as fresh fruits, and some were known as ingredients for traditional medicine to treat minor health complaints. The community discussed the use of wild edible fruits with a review of the nutritional content based on relevant references. Results showed that the community used wild edible fruits for daily nutritional needs, not for sale. Both older and younger generations shared knowledge about the diversity of wild edible fruit plants and were closely related to local traditions kept within the frame of local wisdom. This knowledge, supported by local wisdom held by the community, is important to maintain the sustainability of fruit plant diversity and its conservation.

Diversity and cellulolytic activity of cellulase-producing bacteria isolated from the soils of two mangrove forests in Eastern Thailand. Biodiversitas 24: 3891-3902. The Southeast Asian countries hold the largest proportion of the world's mangrove area. Mangrove forests are a potential source for the isolation of economic microbial enzymes. Cellulases are a widely used microbial enzyme for cellulose degradation in various industries. Therefore, this study aimed to isolate, genetically identify, and enzymatically characterize cellulase-producing bacteria from the soils of two mangrove forests in Eastern Thailand. Twenty-six cellulase-producing bacteria were isolated and subsequently genotyped by Polymerase Chain Reaction-Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) analysis of the 16S rRNA genes. Thirteen different RFLP patterns were obtained and genetically analyzed into six bacterial genera comprising Aeromonas, Bacillus, Chryseobacterium, Lysinibacillus, Pseudomonas, and Vibrio. The Bacillus species were the predominant cellulase-producing bacteria in the study sites. Moreover, the cellulase-producing Chryseobacterium and Lysinibacillus had hardly ever been reported. The Bacillus sp. strain RY08B was the most active cellulase-producing bacterium with 1.510±0.060 U/mL of CMCase activity. The optimum temperature and pH for the CMCase activity were determined to be 50°C at a pH of 7.0 with a thermal stability range of 25-50°C at a pH of 7.0. This bacterium could be applied in several environmentally friendly industries requiring mild conditions for their production processes.
