Short Communication: Mitochondrial cytochrome b gene analysis reveals lineage history of Indonesian Bubalus bubalis. Biodiversitas 26: 4654-4661. Swamp buffalo, Bubalus bubalis, is one of the livestock that strongly influences Indonesian social culture. Phylogeography analysis to predict the lineage history of this species is essential for developing this species, especially for breeding purposes. Thus, this study aims to analyze the lineage history and phylogenetic relationship of Indonesian B. bubalis using the cytochrome b gene of mitochondrial DNA. Blood samples of B. bubalis were taken from 7 sampling regions in Indonesia: Aceh (3 sites), Riau (1 site), Blitar (2 sites), Kalimantan (3 sites), Lombok (3 sites), Madiun (2 sites), and Tana Toraja (3 sites). DNA extraction is conducted from the blood sample, followed by PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) amplification using forward primer L14841 and reverse primer H155149, followed by sequencing and reference search using MegaBLAST (Basic Local Alignment Search Tool). The phylogenetic relationship, based on Neighbor Joining and Maximum Likelihood trees, shows that Indonesian B. bubalis from the Western Indonesia group (Aceh, Riau, Madiun, and Blitar) has a close relation with B. bubalis from India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Nepal. Meanwhile, Indonesian B. bubalis from Central Indonesia (Kalimantan, Lombok, and Tator) has a close relation with B. bubalis from China, Japan, Laos, Vietnam and Thailand. It could be concluded that Indonesian B. bubalis exhibit two distinct maternal lineages, indicating dual domestication routes: the South Asia lineage with a domestication center in India and spread out to Western Indonesia (Aceh, Riau, Blitar) and the East Asia lineage with a domestication center in China and spread out to Central Indonesia (Kalimantan and Lombok). Lineage analysis of Indonesian B. bubalis can have a significant impact on biodiversity, enriching worldwide genetic mapping and providing conservation data for breeding this species.

Biodiversitas 27 (1): d270105. https://doi.org/10.13057/biodiv/d270105. The family Melastomataceae is known for its diplostemonous flowers and appendaged anther connectives. Sarcopyramis is a very small genus within this family with only four accepted taxa across the world. The structure of the calyx apex plays a vital role in differentiating the taxa under this genus. Sarcopyramis subramanii is an endemic plant from northeast India, and has not been studied in detail. This plant was misidentified as S. napalensis, a morphologically similar plant, for a long time. This study aimed to analyze the detailed taxonomic aspects along with palynological features using SEM microscopy to facilitate the adequate identification of this lesser-known species. Plant samples have been collected from three different locations in Assam, northeast India. Photographs of habit, floral parts, and SEM images of pollens are included here for proper validation. The pollen of S. subramanii is prolate-spheroidal in shape with colporate and colpate apertures. From the palynological data, these two species can be easily distinguished as the pollens of S. subramanii possess an outgrowth structure in the colpi. The P/E ratio of S. subramanii is 1.06, whereas S. napalensis is 1.63. The plant should be conserved due to the ongoing rapid habitat destruction, as it has a limited geographical range and a very small population.

Abstract. Ristanto RH, Alhady M, Saputra RA, Darmawan E. 2025. Diversity and bio-indicators of tropical urban lichens in Jakarta, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 26: 5505-5514. Lichens are highly sensitive to air quality changes, making them effective bioindicators for assessing pollution in urban areas. This study analyzed the diversity, dominance, and evenness indices of lichens across urban forests in Jakarta, Indonesia. Sampling was conducted using the cruise and purposive methods, with each administrative city represented by one urban forest park. A total of 18 lichen species were identified, dominated by Bacidia viridifarinosa (35,257 individuals). Penjaringan City Forest showed the highest diversity (H’: 1.295), dominance (D: 0.667), and evenness (J’: 0.723), indicating relatively good air quality. In contrast, Pondok Kelapa (H’: 0.142; D: 0.062; J’: 0.205) and Srengseng Sawah (H’: 0.251; D: 0.071; J’: 0.140) were dominated by a single crustose species tolerant to pollution. Although Gelora Bung Karno Forest had more species, one foliose species dominated, suggesting an imbalance. Overall, lichen distribution patterns reflected high air pollution levels in Jakarta, influenced by temperature, pH, and light intensity. These findings confirm that lichen community compositions can reflect air quality gradients and serve as an effective and economic tool to monitor the environment in urban areas. Air pollution can have a serious impact on public health, requiring public education and implementation of curriculum in schools through environmental education.

Biodiversitas 26: 6188-6196. Birds inhabiting urban areas must adapt to coexist with humans in order to survive. Exposure to human activities may threaten their presence, as anthropogenic stimuli often trigger behavioral reactions similar to those induced by predators, such as moving away when approached. This anti‑predator behavior represents an adaptive response indicating vigilance and can be quantitatively measured using Flight Initiation Distance (FID) to assess bird tolerance to human disturbance. This study aimed to examine the tolerance of Eurasian tree sparrows (Passer montanus) in three residential areas of Bogor, West Java, Indonesia, with differing vegetation density and canopy cover. In total, 120 individuals were recorded across vegetation density categories: high (n = 46), medium (n = 36), and low (n = 38). The data were analyzed using non‑parametric methods because the distribution was not normal, applying the Kruskal-Wallis test followed by Dunn’s post hoc analysis. The results revealed significant differences in FID across sites (p<0.05). FID values increased with vegetation density: 2.82±0.77 m (low), 4.22±1.57 m (medium), and 6.24±2.09 m (high). These results indicate that Eurasian tree sparrows exhibit greater tolerance in urban environments with lower vegetation density and canopy cover, highlighting their resilience and adaptability to human-dominated habitat changes. By situating these findings in a tropical urban context, this study contributes baseline data to a region where behavioral ecology remains underrepresented.

Crabs in mangrove ecosystem in Bagek Kembar, Lombok, Indonesia have potential to be developed as an ecotourism. This research aims to analyze the diversity and abundance of crabs, and to assess the suitability for crab tourism in the Essential Ecosystem Area in Bagek Kembar. Data collection was conducted over three months from June to August 2024 using folding trap and quadrant plot methods. Tourism suitability index was calculated by incorporating several variables, including diversity and evenness indices, number of species, density, and economic value. Sampling conducted using complementary quadrant plots and traditional folding traps (Bubu) documented 16 crab species from 5 families, with all recorded taxa categorized as Not Evaluated by the IUCN. Community structure was characterized by strong dominance of fiddler crabs (Ocypodidae), particularly Austruca annulipes (31.69% relative density), and overall diversity and distribution were relatively stable (Shannon-Wiener H’ = 2.195, evenness E = 0.792). Quadrant plots captured broader assemblage richness (13 species) including visually attractive, behaviorally distinctive fiddler crabs, whereas Bubu traps mainly captured three economically important edible species (Scylla olivacea, Scylla serrata, and Thalamita crenata), confirming a clear separation between observation-oriented and culinary-oriented tourism assets. The modified Tourism Suitability Index integrating diversity, density, species number, economic value, and evenness yielded a score of 2.6, classifying the area as highly suitable for developing crab-focused tourism.

Butterfly community structure in a rehabilitated post-mining tropical rainforest landscape, Sorowako, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 26: 4761-4774. Human disturbances, such as mining, can disrupt butterfly communities, which serve as important ecological indicators. This study evaluated butterfly diversity and richness in conservation and non-conservation zones within the mining area of PT Vale, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Data analysis involved diversity indices, t-tests, and Pearson correlations, with cluster analysis grouping sites and PCA exploring links between butterfly abundance and microclimatic factors. A total of 40 butterfly species belonging to five families, mainly Nymphalidae, Pieridae, and Lycaenidae, were recorded from 18 sampling transects during a four-week field period using standard transect and sweep net methods. The most frequently recorded species was Catopsilia pomona (Pieridae) with a relative abundance of 20.00%, followed by Ideopsis juventa (Nymphalidae) with 19.80%. Results showed that non-conservation sites had slightly higher diversity (1.43±0.67), richness (5.63±4.94), and evenness (0.48±0.13), while dominance was higher in conservation transects (0.52±0.32). This spatial comparison suggests that human-made habitats may support butterfly diversity but also lead to increased species dominance in more intact environments. The t-test showed a significant difference only in evenness. No significant correlations were found between biodiversity indices and environmental variables based on Pearson's analysis. Cluster analysis identified two main site groups: the first included most conservation transects (SC2, SC5, SC6) and some non-conservation transects (SN2, SN3), while the second contained most non-conservation transects and a few conservation sites (SC4, SC8), indicating overlapping habitat features. PCA revealed that light intensity explained 90.15% of the variation in the first principal component, and altitude explained 79.24% in the second, demonstrating their strong influence on butterfly distribution. These results provide baseline data on butterfly community structure and highlight the ecological differences between conservation and disturbed zones.

Stelechocarpus burahol is a species historically used in Java as a natural perfume. Understanding its distribution and morphological variation is crucial for conservation given its rarity. This study aimed to provide the first island-wide distribution mapping and the first morphological analysis of S. burahol in Java. Field surveys in 16 districts across West, Central, and East Java yielded 54 accessions, collected using exploratory sampling method with geographic coordinates recorded to generate a distribution map. A total of 51 morphological characters from both vegetative and generative organs were observed and analyzed using Unweighted Pair Group Method with Arithmetic Mean (UPGMA) in NTSYS 2.02i, Principal Component Analysis (PCA), and Pearson correlation analysis in RStudio 2023.12.1. Field observations revealed that S. burahol remains relatively abundant in Kebumen, Purworejo, Blitar, and Meru Betiri National Park. S. burahol exhibits variation in the shape of the canopy, leaves, flower petals, fruits, and seeds. Phenetic analysis grouped accessions into three major clusters: Group I (25 accessions, small subglobose fruits), Group II (27 accessions, medium obovoid fruits), and Group III (2 accessions, large obovoid fruits). These clusters did not correspond to geographic origin, indicating that phenotypic similarity primarily influences morphological variation. PCA confirmed that fruit traits, particularly fruit length, diameter, weight, and flesh weight (eigenvalues > 0.9), were dominant in group separation. Pearson correlation revealed a relationship among key fruit traits. These findings provide baseline data to support future conservation efforts, with priority given to Group III's large-fruited accessions and Group I's forest-associated populations.

Spiders (Order: Araneae) are among the most diverse and ecologically important predators worldwide, playing a critical role in maintaining ecological balance across terrestrial ecosystems. Despite Iraq's diverse landscapes, which range from arid deserts to lush mountainous regions, its spider fauna remains significantly understudied. In light of this knowledge gap, this study presents new faunistic records of spiders from three major regions of Iraq: Basrah, Baghdad, and Sulaymaniyah, spanning different latitudinal zones. Fieldwork was conducted between January 2023 and December 2024, during which specimens were collected using standard arachnological methods, including hand sampling and pitfall trapping. Specimens were identified using reliable taxonomic keys, with detailed examination of morphological features such as habitus, epigynum (female genitalia), and pedipalps (male reproductive structures). These features were photographed using high-resolution macro imaging for accurate documentation and comparison. The study records eight spider species newly reported from Iraq, representing two new families, four new genera and eight species, broadening the known arachnid diversity of the country. The newly recorded species include: Megalepthyphantes nebulosus,1?, Family: Linyphiidae; Mimetus laevigatus,2?, Family: Mimetidae; Marilynia bicolor,2?, Family: Dictynidae; Philodromus longipalpis,5?, Family: Philodromidae; Argiope bruennichi,1?, Neoscona subfusca,1?,1?, Family: Araneidae; Steatoda erigoniformis,4?,5?, Family: Theridiidae; Bassaniodes caperatus,1?, Family: Thomisidae. All collected specimens have been preserved and deposited in the Natural History Museum of Basrah University, Iraq. These findings not only contribute to the regional biodiversity records but also emphasize the need for continued arachnological surveys across Iraq's varied habitats to better understand species distribution and ecological interactions.

Abstract. Cabardo ELO, Austria ES, Salamanes JJDP. 2025. Butterfly diversity and conservation implications in Real, Quezon, Philippines. Biodiversitas 26: 4363-4373. Butterflies are key bioindicators of environmental health, yet systematic studies on lowland butterfly assemblages in the Philippines are scarce, leaving a crucial gap in biodiversity knowledge and conservation planning. This study aimed to document the diversity, abundance, and habitat associations of butterflies in Brgy. Malapad, Real, Quezon (a lowland barangay within the Sierra Madre Biodiversity Corridor) and to assess their conservation implications. Sampling was conducted from March to June 2024 in two distinct sites: a riparian zone near Nonok Falls and a secondary forest. Using Pollard Walk transects, bait traps, and opportunistic netting, 103 individuals representing 27 species, 22 genera, and 5 families were recorded. Nymphalidae was the most dominant family in terms of species richness and abundance. The riparian zone showed notably higher species richness (20 species), diversity (H?: 2.8115, 1?D: 0.9486), and evenness (J?: 0.9385) than the secondary forest with 13 species, diversity (H?: 2.1630, 1?D: 0.8667), and evenness (J?: 0.7346). Community composition between the two habitats differed substantially, as indicated by a Bray-Curtis dissimilarity index of 0.748. This dissimilarity was statistically supported by a significant Hutcheson t-test (t: 4.444), confirming a marked difference in butterfly diversity between sites. One species, Notocrypta paralysos, was classified as Vulnerable, while five species were endemic to the Philippines. The presence of both endemic and threatened species highlights the urgent need to prioritize lowland habitats in regional conservation strategies. These findings underscore the conservation importance of lowland ecosystems and highlight the need to integrate butterfly diversity data into local conservation planning. This study offers a vital baseline for biodiversity monitoring and supports sustainable land-use and community-based habitat management efforts.

The Belawan River predominantly influences the hydrodynamics of the Belawan Estuary, Indonesia, and the tidal currents from the Strait of Malacca are a dynamic ecosystem with high ecological variability. This study examined the spatiotemporal variations in the macro-benthic community structure in the Belawan Estuary in October 2023, North Sumatra Province, Indonesia. Benthic samples were collected from eight points representing the upstream, middle, and downstream areas of the estuary, using an Ekman grab during high and low tides, with three replicates each. Sampling and water quality measurements were conducted four times in accordance with the tidal cycle: during the new moon, first quarter, full moon, and last quarter. Benthic community structure analysis, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) tests correlating water quality with benthic density and diversity, and the Kruskal-Wallis tests with Dunn's post hoc tests were conducted. A total of 36 species were identified, dominated by Mollusks. The polychaete Nereis virens was ubiquitous, while the highest densities were of invasive bivalves Mytilopsis sallei (average 133 individuals. m-² ±159.76) and Dreissena polymorpha (average 199 individuals. m-² ±525.51). Principal component analysis indicated that tidal dynamics explained more than 70% of community variation. These findings demonstrate that tides play a critical role in structuring benthic assemblages in the Belawan Estuary and provide essential baseline data for managing estuarine biodiversity under increasing anthropogenic pressure.
