The International Journal of Experimental Sports Science Research is a peer-reviewed, international, academic/professional journal, which aims to bridge the gap between coaching and sports science. The journal will integrate theory and practice in sports science, promote critical reflection of coaching practice, and evaluate commonly accepted beliefs about coaching effectiveness and performance enhancement. Open learning systems will be promoted in which: (a) sports science is made accessible to coaches, translating knowledge into working practice; and (b) the challenges faced by coaches are communicated to sports scientists. The vision of the journal is to support the development of a community in which: (i) sports scientists and coaches respect and learn from each other as they assist athletes to acquire skills by training safely and effectively, thereby enhancing their performance, maximizing their enjoyment of the sporting experience and facilitating character development; and (ii) scientific research is embraced in the quest to uncover, understand and develop the processes involved in sports coaching and elite performance.

Abstract

Background: Motor Skill Competency and sportsmanship are two essential outcomes of physical education learning that contribute to students' physical development and character formation. However, many students still demonstrate limited mastery of floor gymnastics skills and insufficient sportsmanship behaviors during learning activities. Cooperative Learning is considered an effective instructional approach because it promotes active participation, peer interaction, collaboration, and shared responsibility among students. Nevertheless, empirical evidence examining its simultaneous effect on Motor Skill Competency and sportsmanship in floor gymnastics learning remains limited. Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of the Cooperative Learning approach in improving Motor Skill Competency and sportsmanship among students during floor gymnastics learning. Methods: This study employed a quantitative approach using a pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design. The participants consisted of 36 junior high school students selected through purposive sampling. The intervention was conducted over eight weeks using the Cooperative Learning approach in floor gymnastics lessons. Motor Skill Competency was assessed through performance-based evaluations covering balance, coordination, flexibility, body control, and movement technique, while sportsmanship was measured using a validated questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Shapiro-Wilk normality test, and Paired Sample t-Test at a significance level of α = 0.05. Results: The findings revealed significant improvements in both Motor Skill Competency and sportsmanship following the intervention. Motor Skill Competency increased from 67.42 ± 7.63 to 82.51 ± 6.38, representing a 22.38% improvement (p = 0.000). Sportsmanship scores increased from 70.18 ± 6.92 to 84.67 ± 5.81, representing a 20.64% improvement (p = 0.000). The largest improvement in Motor Skill Competency was observed in movement technique, while teamwork demonstrated the highest increase among sportsmanship indicators. Conclusions: The Cooperative Learning approach significantly improves both Motor Skill Competency and sportsmanship in floor gymnastics learning. These findings indicate that Cooperative Learning is an effective pedagogical strategy for simultaneously enhancing students' motor performance and positive social behaviors in physical education settings.

Abstract

Background: Habituation in shooting basketball is a critical component that determines the consistency of athletes' performance in dynamic match situations. Virtual Reality (VR) technology offers an immersive simulation environment that allows for repetition of shooting exercises under controlled and varied conditions. However, scientific research that specifically examines the impact of VR training on 3-meter distance shooting habituation in basketball athletes in Indonesia is still very limited. Objectives: This study aims to analyze the impact of the 8-week Virtual Reality training program on habituation levels, shooting accuracy, consistency of shot mechanics, and release speed in basketball athletes. Methods: A pre-experimental design of one-group pretest-posttest was used in this study. Thirty men's basketball athletes (purposive sampling) participated in a VR training program using the Meta Quest 3 headset with a simulation shooting game for 8 weeks, 3 sessions per week. Variables measured included: shooting accuracy (%), habituation index (%), release speed (ms), and release angle consistency (°). Data were analyzed using the Paired Sample T-Test (α = 0.05). Results: There was a significant improvement in shooting accuracy (pre: 48.3 ± 7.2% → post: 67.4 ± 5.8%; p = 0.000), habituation index (pre: 61.2 ± 9.4% → post: 82.7 ± 6.1%; p = 0.000), release speed (pre: 824 ± 64 ms → post: 693 ± 51 ms; p = 0.000), and release angle consistency (pre: 68.4 ± 8.7° → post: 74.2 ± 5.3°; p = 0.001). Conclusions: The 8-week Virtual Reality training program significantly improved the habituation and performance of shooting 3-meter basketball, with practical implications for coaches in designing technology-based training periodizations.

Abstract

Background: Sleep quality is an essential component of post-exercise recovery, particularly following high-intensity physical activities such as aerobic exercise. Autonomic nervous system regulation, commonly assessed through Heart Rate Variability (HRV), has been associated with recovery efficiency and sleep regulation. However, empirical evidence on the application of HRV-based interval training as a recovery strategy to improve sleep quality after aerobic exercise remains limited, particularly among adult women participating in community-based exercise programs. Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the effect of HRV-based interval training on sleep quality following aerobic exercise among members of the Bunda Antang aerobic exercise group. Methods: This study employed a quantitative approach using a Pre-Experimental One Group Pretest-Posttest Design. The participants consisted of 25 women aged 35–45 years selected through purposive sampling from the Bunda Antang aerobic exercise community. The intervention was conducted over six weeks using HRV-based interval training, in which exercise intensity and recovery intervals were individually adjusted according to real-time HRV monitoring. Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), while HRV parameters were measured using a chest-strap heart rate sensor connected to HRV analysis software. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Shapiro-Wilk normality test, and Paired Sample t-Test at a significance level of α = 0.05. Results: The findings revealed significant improvements in sleep quality and HRV parameters following the intervention. PSQI global scores decreased from 11.84 ± 2.31 to 7.12 ± 2.04, representing a 39.86% improvement (p = 0.000). RMSSD values increased from 28.46 ± 6.72 ms to 41.93 ± 7.85 ms, representing a 47.33% improvement (p = 0.000). The largest improvement in PSQI components was observed in sleep latency, while RMSSD showed the most substantial increase among HRV parameters. Conclusions: HRV-based interval training significantly improves sleep quality and autonomic recovery following aerobic exercise. These findings indicate that HRV-based interval training is an effective recovery strategy for enhancing sleep quality among adult women engaged in community-based aerobic exercise programs.

Abstract

Background: Body fat percentage reduction is one of the primary objectives among recreational runners, and various training modalities have been proposed to achieve this outcome efficiently. Interval running training and steady-state jogging represent two widely practiced approaches with distinct physiological demands, yet comparative evidence regarding their relative effectiveness in reducing body fat percentage among recreational running club members remains limited. Objectives: This study aimed to compare the effect of interval running training and steady-state jogging on body fat percentage reduction among members of a recreational running community. Methods: This study employed a quantitative approach using a Quasi-Experimental Two-Group Pretest-Posttest Design. The participants consisted of 40 members of a recreational running club selected through purposive sampling and divided into two groups: an interval training group (n = 20) and a steady-state jogging group (n = 20). The intervention was conducted over eight weeks with a frequency of three sessions per week. The interval training group performed repeated high-intensity running bouts alternated with active recovery periods, while the steady-state jogging group performed continuous running at a constant moderate intensity for an equivalent total duration. Body fat percentage was measured using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), and VO2max was estimated using the Multistage Fitness Test (Bleep Test). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Shapiro-Wilk normality test, Paired Sample t-Test, and Independent Sample t-Test at a significance level of α = 0.05. Results: Both groups demonstrated significant reductions in body fat percentage following the intervention. The interval training group showed a decrease from 26.84 ± 4.12% to 21.37 ± 3.58%, representing a 20.38% reduction (p = 0.000), while the steady-state jogging group showed a decrease from 27.05 ± 4.46% to 23.92 ± 4.01%, representing an 11.58% reduction (p = 0.000). The independent sample t-test revealed a significantly greater reduction in the interval training group compared to the steady-state jogging group (p = 0.002). Conclusions: Interval running training produces a significantly greater reduction in body fat percentage compared to steady-state jogging among recreational running club members, suggesting that interval training is a more time-efficient and metabolically effective strategy for body composition improvement in this population.

Abstract

Background: Leg strength is a fundamental physical component required by sports coaching education students to support both their academic practical activities and future professional roles as sports coaches. Traditional resistance training guidelines generally recommend moderate-to-high intensity loads (>60% 1-RM) to elicit meaningful strength gains. However, very low-intensity squat training combined with techniques such as slow-tempo execution and reduced rest intervals has recently emerged as a potential alternative for inducing strength adaptations, particularly for individuals seeking joint-friendly training options. Empirical evidence regarding the effectiveness of very low-intensity squat training in producing leg strength gains among sports coaching education students remains limited. Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the effect of very low-intensity squat training (<30% 1-RM) on leg strength among sports coaching education students. Methods: This study employed a quantitative approach using a Pre-Experimental One Group Pretest-Posttest Design. The participants consisted of 38 sports coaching education students selected through purposive sampling. The intervention was conducted over eight weeks with a frequency of three sessions per week, in which participants performed back squat exercises at an intensity below 30% of their one-repetition maximum (1-RM), executed with slow tempo and short inter-set rest intervals to maximize time under tension and metabolic stress. Leg strength was assessed using the back squat 1-RM test, while leg power was assessed using the standing broad jump test. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Shapiro-Wilk normality test, and Paired Sample t-Test at a significance level of α = 0.05. Results: The findings revealed significant improvements in leg strength and power following the intervention. Back squat 1-RM increased from 52.36 ± 9.14 kg to 64.78 ± 10.27 kg, representing a 23.73% improvement (p = 0.000). Standing broad jump distance increased from 178.42 ± 14.36 cm to 196.85 ± 13.92 cm, representing a 10.33% improvement (p = 0.000). Conclusions: Very low-intensity squat training (<30% 1-RM) performed with slow tempo and short rest intervals significantly improves leg strength and power among sports coaching education students, suggesting that this training approach is a viable, joint-friendly alternative to conventional high-intensity resistance training for enhancing lower-limb strength in this population.

Abstract

Background: Futsal is characterized by high-intensity intermittent actions requiring rapid perception, decision-making, technical precision, and shooting accuracy. Conventional shooting training improves technical execution but often lacks the perceptual and cognitive demands experienced during competitive matches. Virtual Reality (VR)-based training has emerged as an innovative training modality capable of providing immersive and representative learning environments that integrate perceptual, cognitive, and motor components simultaneously.. Objective: This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of an eight-week Virtual Reality-based training program on shooting performance among BOA SORTE FC futsal players from Timor-Leste. Methods: A quasi-experimental pretest–posttest control group design was employed involving twenty-four male futsal players from BOA SORTE FC (age 18–24 years). Participants were allocated into a Virtual Reality Training Group (n = 12) and a Conventional Training Group (n = 12). Both groups completed three training sessions per week for eight weeks. The VR group performed immersive shooting simulations using VR technology integrated with decision-making tasks, whereas the control group received conventional shooting drills. Shooting accuracy, ball velocity, shooting reaction time, and shooting success percentage were assessed before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using paired-samples t-tests, independent t-tests, ANCOVA, and Cohen's d effect size with a significance level of p < 0.05. Results: Players receiving Virtual Reality-based training demonstrated significantly greater improvements in shooting accuracy, shooting success percentage, reaction time, and ball velocity compared with the conventional training group (p < 0.05). The largest improvement was observed in shooting accuracy (Cohen's d > 1.20), indicating a large practical effect. Conclusion: Virtual Reality-based training is an effective complementary training strategy for improving shooting performance in competitive futsal players. Integrating immersive perceptual-cognitive practice with conventional technical training provides superior improvements compared with conventional training alone.

Abstract

Backgroud: High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) has emerged as a time-efficient alternative exercise modality to moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) in an effort to lose weight and body fat in sedentary populations. Methods: This article systematically reviews the current literature on the most optimal doses of HIIT training (frequency, session duration, intensity, and work-rest ratio) for weight loss in adults who were previously physically inactive. Searches were conducted on PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar databases for relevant randomized clinical trials (RCTs), meta-analyses, and systematic reviews. Results: The results of the synthesis showed that HIIT programs run for more than 8 weeks, a minimum of 3 sessions per week, with work intervals of less than 60 seconds separated by active recovery ≤90 seconds were shown to be more effective in producing beneficial changes in body composition. In addition, HIIT with a volume of ≥75 minutes per week showed advantages over the control group in indicators of body fat percentage, waist-to-hip circumference, and VO₂max, so it could be considered for short-term fat loss. The effects of HIIT on fat loss and cardiorespiratory fitness in young and middle-aged adults are equal to or better than MICT, which is influenced by age, obesity complications, duration of intervention (>6 weeks), frequency, and length of HIIT intervals. Conclusions: that the optimal HIIT dosage for the sedentary population ranges from a frequency of 3 times/week, the duration of the program is more than 8 weeks, with a weekly volume of at least 75 minutes, although it is necessary to make gradual adjustments given the characteristics of a population that has not been adapted to high-intensity exercise.

Abstract

Backgroud: This study was aimed at examining the impact of administrative training courses and its relationships with classroom management of physical education teachers at the Samarra Education Department. This research is based on the assumption that the administrative training can be considered the essential component in developing professional competences of the teacher and keeping up with the educational and pedagogical developments in school sports. The classroom management can be viewed as the key competence in achieving the goals of the educational process. Methods: A descriptive research methodology was used with the use of a survey-analytical approach and correlational analysis, which was recognized as the most suitable approach to research problem and its goals. The research population consisted of 134 physical education teachers of the Salah Al-Din Directorate of Education, Samarra Education Department. The participants were divided into the pilot sample of 10 teachers and the main sample of 124 teachers. The questionnaire was used as the main research instrument, which comprised the Administrative Training Scale of five factors and 15 questions, as well as the Classroom Management Scale. Results: It was found that there is a statistically significant positive correlation between the effectiveness of administrative training courses and classroom management (p = 0.017). Moreover, it was revealed that the physical education teachers have satisfactory participation in administrative training courses and possess sufficient skills of classroom management. Conclusions: Administrative training plays the important role in the formation of professional attitude and motivates to work. Moreover, it makes the transition from the routine professional activity to the modern developments in school sports possible
