Abstract

Background: Academic stress is a prevalent issue among university students and has been widely associated with adverse mental health outcomes. Increasing academic demands, transitional challenges, and performance pressure place students at higher risk of experiencing psychological distress. Given the growing global concern regarding student mental health, this study aimed to examine the impact of academic stress on mental health among university students. This literature review sought to synthesize existing evidence and identify key trends related to academic stress and mental health outcomes. Methods: This study employed a narrative literature review design. Relevant articles published within the last ten years were identified through electronic databases using keywords related to academic stress, mental health, and university students. Studies were selected based on predefined inclusion criteria focusing on undergraduate and postgraduate students. Data were analyzed through critical reading and qualitative synthesis of findings from peer-reviewed journals. Ethical approval was not required as the study used secondary data. Results: The reviewed literature consistently demonstrated a strong association between academic stress and negative mental health outcomes. High levels of academic stress were linked to increased symptoms of anxiety, depression, emotional exhaustion, sleep disturbances, and reduced psychological well-being. Academic workload, examinations, time pressure, and insufficient academic support were identified as major stressors. Protective factors such as coping strategies, resilience, and social support were reported to reduce the negative effects of academic stress. Conclusion: This literature review highlights the significant impact of academic stress on university students’ mental health. The findings emphasize the need for promotive and preventive mental health strategies within higher education institutions. Future research should focus on intervention-based and longitudinal studies to strengthen mental health support systems for students

Abstract

ABSTRACT Background: Women who perform their duties as wives within a patriarchal system are responsible for household management, which can make women one of the groups vulnerable to mental disorders, especially stress. This research is important to conduct in order to examine the relationship between the patriarchal system and stress levels in mothers with toddlers, as an effort to broaden the understanding of social determinants of maternal mental health and provide a basis for family-based psychosocial interventions. Methods: This study uses a quantitative method with a cross-sectional approach. The population of this study consisted of 37 mothers who have toddlers. This study uses a bivariate test, namely the Mann-Whitney test. Results: The bivariate analysis using the Mann-Whitney test showed no significant difference in stress levels, with a significance value of 0.124. Conclusion: In conclusion, research on the patriarchal system and stress levels in mothers with toddlers indicates that, descriptively, mothers living in a patriarchal system tend to have higher stress levels compared to mothers who do not live in a patriarchal system. However, the results of the Mann–Whitney U test show that the difference in stress levels between the two groups is not statistically significan. Abstract

Background: Delivery through Sectio Caesarea (SC) often causes anxiety in preoperative mothers due to lack of information, concerns about fetal safety, and fear of the surgical procedure. Anxiety can trigger physiological responses such as increased heart rate, sleep disturbances, and emotional tension that may affect the mother’s condition before delivery. Therefore, effective non-pharmacological interventions are needed to help reduce patient anxiety. One intervention that can be used is distraction therapy through nature videos, which provide calming visual stimuli and help divert the patient’s attention. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of distraction therapy using nature videos in reducing anxiety levels among pre-Sectio Caesarea patients in the Khadijah inpatient ward of RSIA Annisa. Methods: This study used a case study design based on Evidence-Based Practice Nursing. The research was conducted in the Khadijah inpatient ward of RSIA Annisa in December 2025 with two pre-Sectio Caesarea patients experiencing moderate anxiety. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and measurement of anxiety levels using the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS). The intervention consisted of distraction therapy using nature videos for 15 minutes each day for three consecutive days after the patients provided informed consent. Results: The results showed a decrease in anxiety levels in both patients. The HARS score of the first patient decreased from 26 to 13, while the second patient’s score decreased from 25 to 12. Patients also appeared calmer, showed reduced restlessness, and experienced improved rest quality after the intervention. Conclusion: Distraction therapy using nature videos is effective in reducing anxiety in pre-Sectio Caesarea patients and can be used as a non-pharmacological nursing intervention to improve patients’ psychological comfort before surgery.

Abstract

Background: Acne is an infection characterized by inflammation of the polysebocyte layer caused by microorganisms such as Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Propionibacterium acnes. Antibiotic use can lead to drug resistance, making natural ingredients a viable alternative. Patchouli leaves (Pogostemon cablin Benth) contain flavonoids, saponins, and tannins with antibacterial properties. Methods: This was a laboratory experimental study involving maceration extraction of patchouli leaf using ethyl acetate and methanol solvents, followed by gel formulation and antibacterial effectiveness testing (well diffusion method) against S. aureus, S. epidermidis, and P. acnes at 3%, 5%, and 7% extract concentrations. Results: Physical stability evaluation showed all gel preparations met semisolid criteria (organoleptic, homogeneity, pH 4.5–8.0, adhesiveness >1 s, spreadability 5–7 cm, viscosity 3000–50000 cPs, thixotropic flow). At 7% concentration, ethyl acetate and methanol extracts showed the greatest inhibitory zones against all tested bacteria. Conclusion: Gel preparations of ethyl acetate and methanol extracts of patchouli leaf (Pogostemon cablin Benth) showed good physical stability and effective antibacterial activity at all concentrations, with 7% showing the highest inhibitory effect.

Abstract

Background: Hemoglobin level measurement using the cyanmethemoglobin method is affected by lipemic samples. Lipemic serum, caused by lipoprotein particles such as chylomicrons, VLDL, and triglycerides, creates chromophoric interference in photometric analysis, affecting wavelength readings and causing light scattering due to lipid particles. Methods: An observational analytic study using a total sampling technique was conducted at the East Kalimantan Provincial Health Laboratory during August–September 2024. A total of 30 lipemic specimens were included, collected from patients undergoing routine blood examination with cholesterol levels >200 mg/dL. Data were obtained from secondary medical records. Results: Of 30 lipemic samples, 28 samples (93%) showed hemoglobin levels within the normal range and 2 samples (7%) were below normal. The minimum hemoglobin value was 12.0 g/dL, maximum was 15.7 g/dL, and the mean was 13.7 g/dL. Regarding cholesterol levels, 22 samples (73%) had cholesterol of 201–250 mg/dL and 8 samples (27%) had cholesterol of 251–300 mg/dL. Conclusion: Hemoglobin measurement in lipemic serum using the cyanmethemoglobin method can serve as an accurate reference. The average results showed no values outside the normal range. The two samples below normal may be attributable to unknown confounding variables such as dietary habits, smoking behavior, and age.

Abstract

Background: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycemia which can lead to serious complications. Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) is an important biomarker reflecting average blood glucose over 2–3 months. Red Andong leaves (Cordyline fruticosa L.A. Cheval) contain bioactive compounds — saponins, flavonoids, and tannins — with potential antidiabetic activity. Methods: This experimental study used a pretest-posttest control group design. Sixteen male mice induced with alloxan were randomly assigned to two groups: a control group (no treatment) and a treatment group receiving 1 mL of red Andong leaf infusion orally twice daily for 14 days. Data normality was assessed using the Shapiro-Wilk test, followed by a Paired T-Test for between-group comparison. Results: Mean HbA1c in the treatment group before intervention was 5.494% (min 4.4%, max 6.6%). After 14 days, HbA1c decreased to a mean of 5.075% (min 3.4%, max 6.3%). Paired T-Test yielded p = 0.00 (p < 0.05), indicating a statistically significant difference between pre- and post-intervention HbA1c levels. Conclusion: Red Andong leaf infusion significantly reduced HbA1c levels in diabetic mice. The effect is attributed to the combined action of flavonoids (enhancing glycogenesis and β-cell regeneration), tannins (inhibiting α-glucosidase), and saponins (inhibiting intestinal glucose absorption).

Abstract

Background: Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR) is a non-specific indicator of systemic inflammation widely used in clinical laboratory practice. Physiological factors including menstrual cycle phase, anemia, and hormonal influences can affect ESR values in women of reproductive age. Female medical laboratory technology students represent an ideal population for studying physiological variation in hematological parameters. This study aimed to describe ESR values and complete blood count (CBC) parameters among female DIII Medical Laboratory Technology students at Poltekkes Kemenkes Kaltim and to analyze their correlation. Methods: This descriptive observational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted at the Hematology Laboratory of Poltekkes Kemenkes Kaltim. A total of 31 female students aged 18–25 years who met the inclusion criteria were enrolled. Blood samples were collected by venipuncture; CBC was examined using a Hematology Analyzer and ESR was measured using the Westergren method. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Spearman correlation (α=0.05). Informed consent was obtained from all participants. Results: The mean ESR was 20.74 ± 16.38 mm/h (median 18.00 mm/h, IQR 11.5–28.5, range 1–76 mm/h); Shapiro-Wilk test confirmed non-normal distribution (W=0.8937; p=0.005). Based on the Westergren reference value for adult women (≤20 mm/h), 58.1% of subjects had normal ESR and 41.9% had elevated ESR. Mean hemoglobin was 13.01 g/dL with 12.9% classified as mildly anemic. Mean leukocyte count was 8,143 cells/µL with a normal differential. Spearman correlation analysis revealed no statistically significant correlation between ESR and all CBC parameters (p>0.05), although a borderline correlation was found between ESR and lymphocytes (rho=0.343; p=0.059). Conclusion: ESR values in apparently healthy female students showed wide variability, with 41.9% exceeding the normal reference limit, reflecting the influence of physiological factors—particularly menstrual cycle phase and hormonal status—rather than pathological processes. No significant correlation was found between ESR and CBC parameters, likely due to the narrow hemoglobin range in the study population. These findings emphasize the importance of considering physiological context when interpreting ESR in women of reproductive age. Longitudinal studies recording menstrual cycle phases are recommended.
