Abstract

Preaching is an integral part of the ministry activities of the vikaris (vicars) of the Toraja Mamasa Church (GTM). The expectations of GTM congregations toward their preachers often emphasize the preacher’s humanistic qualities. Among these expectations are the balance between the conceptual and practical aspects of preaching, the duration of the sermon, and the preacher’s style. On the one hand, such expectations reflect the congregation’s genuine need to understand the Word of God through preaching. On the other hand, preachers often view these expectations as an attitude that merely seeks to satisfy the listeners’ preferences. In this Community Service Program we carries the theme “Creative-Pastoral Preaching from Old Testament Texts.” The preaching model proposed in this program aims to bridge the tension between congregational expectations and the preacher’s concerns. The model integrates principles of adult learning, pastoral care theory, the Appreciative Inquiry research model, and homiletical theory. The material was developed using a qualitative-analytical method, in which the author conducted an in-depth analysis of the GTM context, the vicar’s context, and relevant data concerning theories related to creative-pastoral preaching. The data were collected through observation, interviews, and literature sources, which were then processed and analyzed by the author to be formulated into a journal. The outcome of this community service activity using the Pastoral Preaching Model is to enable GTM vicars to deliver the message of God’s Word in a way that is understood, received, and transformative for the congregation.

Abstract

This paper is a result of research and community service that integrates academic theological studies with the church's need for theological principles to examine the relationship between church theology and local culture at the practical level in congregational ministry. It explores the practical theological experiences of the Gereja Masehi Injili di Timor (GMIT) and the Gereja Toraja Mamasa (GTM) in conjunction with academic theological studies. An inadequate understanding of contextualization is considered to be the cause of the lack of development of relevant methods and approaches at the practical level in congregations by church ministers. The discussion, revealed that the primary issue that needs to be addressed is resolving issues of terminology and dogmatics presumption. Using a qualitative analysis method, this study confirms initial needs and can provide suggestions for a methodological design to fulfill the objectives of a future church framework on the contextualization of theology and dialogue between the gospel and culture, particularly in local church organizations with ethnic backgrounds such as both churches. It also reveals the need for an adequate hermeneutic method to ensure the application of scientific principles and practical needs that emphasize dialogue in four contexts.

Abstract

In the HKBP church, Sunday school children are one of the valuable assets that will become the next generation of church development, because Sunday school children are an important part of church life and the future of Christian ministry. Based on Mark 10:14, it shows Jesus' great concern for children and affirms that they are worthy of receiving the Kingdom of God. This statement emphasizes the importance of making children part of the main concern in ministry, especially in teaching God's word from an early age. This paper aims to highlight the urgency of developing the faith of Sunday school children through creative and innovative methods that are relevant to today's children, namely by utilizing creative teaching aids taken from natural materials. Through Community Service (PkM) activities at HKBP Hutahaean, it is intended to demonstrate that the role of teaching aids not only increases children's ability to grasp biblical messages, but also further arouses their enthusiasm to know and love God. In this study, a seminar was also conducted for Sunday school teachers in the application of this teaching method by introducing a teaching aid book distributed by the HKBP Theological College institution, so that Sunday school teachers are expected to develop this contextual teaching method to meet the learning needs of Sunday school children in their faith growth.

Abstract

Qualitative research training with the Nvivo application for undergraduate students of Theology and PAK at STT Ekumene Jakarta is a necessity for completing their final thesis assignments, where so far the most widely known and used is data processing with SPSS software for quantitative research and manual data processing for qualitative methods. Through this qualitative training with Nvivo software, the aim is not only to provide an understanding of how the NVivo software is useful but also how to use it and its benefits in supporting data processing from the collection of thesis research data so that the results are faster and more guaranteed. This training is in accordance with what is needed by the Bureau of Research and Community Service (BPPM) STT Ekumene Jakarta which targets that 6th and 8th semester students in the Undergraduate Theology and PAK Study Program have the knowledge and skills in processing qualitative research data with software. The method chosen is through training that contains an explanation of the importance of research with qualitative methods using NVivo software, in this case NVivo 12, accompanied by simulations and direct practice by students on their respective laptops. The training was quite effective where students were able to recognize the main features of the NVivo program to enter interview data and other necessary data.

Abstract

This article analyzes a Community Service Program carried out by the Master of Theology Study Program of STT Real Batam at GBI My Home Tanjung Uban Kota on 24 to 26 January 2026 as a model for the downstream transfer of Trinitarian research grounded in the exegetical study of Deuteronomy 6:4. The approach employed is community-based participatory research, utilizing theological seminars, Bible study, interactive discussion, and doctrinal mentoring. The analysis demonstrates that translating the results of lexical and grammatical exegesis of the concept of eḥāḏ into the catechetical space of the congregation produces a significant strengthening of Trinitarian literacy, particularly in distinguishing the complex oneness of God from both tritheistic and modalistic misconceptions. The findings affirm that the downstream transfer of theological research is not merely a dissemination of knowledge but a formative pedagogical process that strengthens the hermeneutical capacity of congregants in responding to contemporary theological challenges. The article contributes by formulating a model of research-based community engagement that integrates the framework of practical theology with the tradition of public theology within the context of local Indonesian congregations. Its practical implication calls upon theological higher education institutions to position community service as a strategic pathway for the transformation of theological knowledge, rather than treating it as a mere supplementary element of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education.

Abstract

The marginalization of People with Mental Health Disorders (Orang Dengan Gangguan Jiwa, ODGJ) in Indonesia unfolds within a paradoxical space, in which faith communities theologically called to be sites of restoration frequently reproduce stigma through spiritual and moral attributions of psychic suffering. The realities of pasung (shackling), structural poverty, and the limited provision of mental health services deepen such exclusion, while theological education in Indonesia has not yet fully addressed the disjunction between academic space and vulnerable bodies. This article offers a reflection on a community service program conducted by the Undergraduate Theology Program of STT Real Batam at Rumah Singgah Talitakum Cahaya Batam, with residents undergoing rehabilitation for mental health disorders as its target participants. The program was carried out through a participatory approach integrating pastoral accompaniment, spiritual education grounded in John 14:27, communal prayer, distribution of basic food supplies, and relational interaction. The impact analysis is constructed upon the integration of four theoretical frameworks, namely spiritual well-being, pastoral care, diakonia as reciprocal service, and missio Dei as participation in the work of God. The findings indicate that pastoral presence contributes to the existential well-being of participants, strengthens the social capital of the shelter, and forms ethical sensitivity and ministerial competence among theology students. Furthermore, the program demonstrates that ministry to ODGJ can be read as a locus theologicus that contests the charitable paradigm and shifts ministry toward diaconal resonance. The contribution of this article lies in proposing a model of contextual theological engagement that integrates psychosocial rehabilitation, student formation, and the church's mission for marginal communities.
