JIPI is scientific journal and published since 2017. Since 2021, JIPI has been published every March, June, September and December. Since 2023, JIPI will prioritize publishing papers submitted in English. Since 2024, JIPI has been nationally accredited (Sinta 2) by the Ministry of Research and Technology or National Research and Innovation Aagency.

Abstract

Improving students’ scientific communication skills in the learning process has become a recent challenge. Scientific communication is one of the essential skills required, particularly in science education. The purpose of this research was to develop a learning tool of project based learning-science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (PjBL-STEM) to improve scientific communication skills and learning outcomes of the grade XII students on the topic of engineering and technology. This research employed a research and development (R&D) method through 4-D model approach (define, design, develop, and disseminate). The study involved students of SMAN 5 Jember to implement a small (N=30) and large-scale (N=60) for this research. The research instruments of this study were expert validation, teacher and student response questionnaires, learning outcome tests, and scientific communication skills test. Expert validation showed that the learning tools (teaching instructional design, student worksheets, learning materials, and assessments) were excellent, with an average score above 4.0. Practicality tests by teachers and students confirmed the usefulness of this tool, categorizing it as "very practical" to "practical". In addition, the device significantly improved students' scientific communication skills (significance values of 0.001 and 0.000) and learning outcomes (mean scores of 77.43 for the small group and 77.35 for the large group). This study concludes that the developed PjBL-STEM device is feasible, practical, and effective in supporting 21st-century learning.

Abstract

This research is based on the limited use of learning media which results in students experiencing difficulties in understanding lessons and a lack of learning motivation, which impacts low learning outcomes. This research aims to develop valid, effective, and practical google sites multimedia to improve conceptual understanding and student motivation in the material of the digestive system. The research method used was research and development (R&D) with the ADDIE model, namely: analyze, design, development, implementation, evaluation. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and questionnaires. Validation by material experts showed a "very valid" category with a percentage of 87.74%, while media experts reached 90.22%. The effectiveness test produced a significance of 0.000 (<0.05), indicating a significant difference between the pretest (63.28) and posttest (89.62) scores, with an average increase in N-Gain of 0.72 (high). The learning motivation questionnaire obtained a score of 88.77% (very high). The practicality test by teachers produced 99.10% and and user responses from students 92.07%, indicating this application is very practical. The research results prove that google sites is feasible, effective, and practical to use to improve students' conceptual understanding and motivation in the digestive system topic.

Abstract

The present study has been conducted with a view to ascertaining the extent to which implementing a constructivist learning model influences science literacy and students' cognitive learning outcomes (achievement). The research methodology employed is a quasi-experimental design, characterized by a pretest-posttest design with a control group. Sample selection was purposive, with the research subjects divided into an experimental class receiving constructivist treatment and a control class receiving conventional instruction. The research instrumentation encompassed a science literacy diagnostic test, a learning outcome evaluation test, and an observation sheet to validate the learning implementation process. Inferential data analysis was performed using an independent t-test and the calculation of normalized gain scores. The research findings indicate that constructivist learning has a significant influence on enhancing both learning outcomes and science literacy among students (significance level 0,00 < 0.01). In comparison, the experimental class demonstrated an average post-test learning outcome score of 65 points, which was significantly higher than the 42 points achieved by the control class. In addition, the mean science literacy score for the experimental class was 73.17, higher than that of the control class (61.37). Consequently, it can be concluded that constructivist learning is effective within the context of science instruction. This approach has the potential to optimise learning outcomes and reinforce students' science literacy. The present study proposes adopting constructivism as a pedagogical strategy to foster students' conceptual understanding and participatory engagement

Abstract

Science literacy is a crucial competency in addressing the challenges of 21st-century learning. Low science literacy in biology subjects is important in science education. This research aims to develop e-modules for the human digestive system based on the self-directed learning readiness (SDLR) framework to enhance students' science literacy and independent learning readiness. This development research uses the analyze, design, develop, implement, and evaluate (ADDIE) model. Data were collected through expert validation tests, science teacher assessments, science literacy tests, SDLR questionnaires, implementation observations, and student response questionnaires to e-modules. The data was analyzed descriptively, quantitatively, and using N-Gain calculations. The results of the study demonstrate that the e-module on the human digestive system is proven to be valid, based on expert assessment with Aiken's V index of 0.84. The results of the teacher's assessment also demonstrated high validity, with content validity ratio (CVR) and contet validity index (CVI) scores of 0.98 and 0.99, respectively. The results of implementing the e-module showed an increase in science literacy and SDLR, with N-gains of 0.349 and 0.426 in the medium category. The highest increase occurred in the competence of explaining scientific phenomena and the desire to learn, with an N-gain of 50% each. Students responded positively to the e-module because it is easily accessible, attractive, and able to motivate students to learn independently. Thus, it can be concluded that the e-module on the human digestive system, based on self-directed learning readiness, can improve science literacy and students' readiness for independent learning

Abstract

Despite Indonesia’s rich medicinal-plant biodiversity, primary education has not adequately integrated this knowledge into age-appropriate and bilingual learning media, leading to limited understanding among elementary school students. This research aims to develop and test the effectiveness of a bilingual snap book as a learning medium to increase the knowledge of primary school students about local medicinal plants. The study was conducted using the research and development (R&D) method with the ADDIE (analyze, design, develop, implement, and evaluate) model. The product developed is an interactive full-color bilingual snap book equipped with magnetic stick-and-release features to help students actively learn about local medicinal plants in Indonesian and English. The media was validated by five experts in health, education, biology, language, and media fields, resulting in a content validity ratio (CVR) and content validity index (CVI) score of 1.00, indicating that the media is valid and feasible for use. The implementation phase was carried out with 20 fifth-grade students at MIM Teladan Magelang City. The results of the pretest and posttest analysis showed an increase in the average score from 61.11 to 73.44. The wilcoxon signed ranks test produced a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant improvement in students’ knowledge after using the media. These findings show that the bilingual snap book is valid, practical, and effective in enhancing students’ understanding of local medicinal plants and supporting the development of environmental care attitudes. In addition, its bilingual format contributes to improving both science and language literacy among primary school students

Abstract

This quantitative descriptive–correlational study explored the connection between senior high school students' cognitive abilities and their argumentation skills within the context of physics learning. Conducted at a public high school in Ketapang, West Kalimantan, the research utilized a multiple-choice test based on Bloom's revised taxonomy (C1–C5) to measure cognitive performance. Argumentation skills were evaluated using instruments aligned with Toulmin’s argument pattern (TAP). The findings revealed a decline in students' cognitive performance as task complexity increased, with scores of 78% for remembering, 61.25% for understanding, 45% for applying, 28.75% for analyzing, and 17.50% for evaluating. Similarly, argumentation skills showed a hierarchical pattern: 80% of students could state claims, 65.71% provided evidence, 51.43% explained phenomena, and only 34.29% were able to construct reasoned solutions. A Pearson correlation analysis indicated a strong, positive relationship between the two variables ( r>0.6;p<0.05). These results suggest that a higher level of cognitive ability is linked to stronger scientific argumentation, underscoring the necessity of integrating higher-order thinking skills into physics instruction to improve students' reasoning and scientific discourse.

Abstract

Ground-dwelling insects play an important role in the decomposition of soil organic matter and serve as bioindicators of environmental degradation, which is reflected by the decline in insect diversity. This study aimed to determine the similarity and diversity levels of ground-dwelling insects and to produce an identification book across different habitat types in Lembah Sabil, Aceh Barat Daya. An exploratory survey method with purposive sampling was applied. The research subjects were all ground-dwelling insects inhabiting various habitats, with observations conducted at four sites in Lembah Sabil. Data were analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. The results showed that insect similarity was 59% between coffee plantations and secondary forests, 29% between coastal forests and nutmeg plantations, 36% between coastal forests and coffee plantations, 29% between coastal forests and secondary forests, 42% between coffee and nutmeg plantations, and 48% between nutmeg plantations and secondary forests. Diversity levels were categorized as moderate, with index values of 2.69 in coastal forests, 2.54 in coffee plantations, 2.25 in nutmeg plantations, and 2.43 in secondary forests. The feasibility test of the identification book yielded a score of 76%, indicating it is suitable for use. In conclusion, the similarity of ground-dwelling insects in coastal forests was low, while coffee plantations, nutmeg plantations, and secondary forests exhibited higher similarity. The diversity levels across all four habitat types were classified as moderate. Keywords: Similarity, diversity, ground-dwelling insects, habitat, Lembah Sabil.

Abstract

Environmental literacy is one of the important skills of the 21st century that needs to be developed along with increasingly complex global environmental changes, especially related to the issue of plastic waste which is a real problem in the school environment. However, learning at one of the junior high schools in Tulungagung is not optimal in fostering environmental awareness and the media used is not varied enough. The purpose of this study is to produce a PBL-based e-comic that is feasible, practical, and effective in improving students' environmental literacy on the material of human influence on the ecosystem. This study uses the ADDIE development model. The results of the media validity test of 89.79% and material of 90.00% were classified as very valid, and the assessment instruments used were valid and reliable. The practicality test by teachers and students obtained a percentage of 91.30% classified as very practical. The effectiveness test showed that there was an increase in environmental literacy between before the application of media (pretest) and after the application of media (posttest) with an average n-gain value of all environmental literacy indicators of 0.33 including the moderate category. The findings of this study indicate that e-comic based on Problem Based Learning are feasible to use, practical, and able to improve students' environmental literacy

Abstract

To assess students' diverse chemical representation skills in electrolysis cell materials, this research aims to develop and evaluate a predict-observe-explain (POE)-based diagnostic test instrument. Tessmer's Formative Evaluation, which included the preliminary self-evaluation, prototyping (expert review, one-to-one, and small group), and field-test stages, was used in the development model. Fifty grade 12 students from Yogyakarta High School, with varying cognitive capacities, participated in the study. Excellent content validity was indicated by the validation results' content validity index (CVI) and content validity ratio (CVR) of 1. Excellent internal consistency was demonstrated by reliability analysis using the Rasch model, which yielded Cronbach’s alpha of 0.93, person reliability of 0.88, and item reliability of 0.87. Three groups of students' representational skills were identified: high (18%), medium (48%), and low (34%). While learners in the low category were still unable to integrate the three levels of representation, learners with high ability regularly did so. The results validate the POE-based instrument's validity, reliability, and efficacy as a diagnostic tool for thoroughly evaluating the integration of chemical representations. In addition to practically advancing reflective and contextual chemistry learning, this work reinforces the relevance of multiple representations-based diagnostic evaluations in promoting 21st-century chemical reasoning

Abstract

Waste from the Antang landfill is estimated to come from various sources, including industry, agriculture, and households. This waste often contains heavy metals and magnetic minerals that can accumulate in the soil, leading to increased magnetic susceptibility. This study aims to analyze the magnetic susceptibility, mineral composition, and morphology of magnetic minerals found in the Antang Makassar landfill. The research utilized several methods: the rock magnetic method for testing magnetic susceptibility, x-ray diffraction (XRD) for mineralogical analysis, and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) for characterizing the morphology of magnetic minerals. The results indicated that magnetic susceptibility values ranged from 1.442 x 10-6 m³/kg to 33.523 x 10-6 m³/kg, suggesting the presence of ferrimagnetic minerals in the soil. The morphology of the magnetic minerals in the soil around the Antang Makassar landfill was characterized by various shapes, including nearly octahedral forms, spherules (or imperfect spheres), and angular shapes. The octahedral and angular forms are believed to result from pedogenic processes, while the spherules are associated with anthropogenic processes related to human activities.
