Abstract

Gingival fibromatosis is an enlargement of the gingiva with firm consistency without bleeding and can affect the maxilla or mandible. Gingival enlargement is caused by many factors, including inflammatory conditions, side effects of systemic drugs, hereditary, or idiopathic. A 7-year-old girl with a chief complaint of gingival enlargement throughout the maxillary and mandible. The condition was noted 3 years ago. This condition was not found in any member of the family, and there was no history of taking any medication. During intraoral examination, a complete enlargement of the maxillary gingiva and mandible was the same around, and bleeding did not exist. The patient was referred for a biopsy, and the histopathology result is consistent with gingival fibromatosis. Gingival enlargement can be caused by many factors; in this case, reported gingival fibromatosis is due to an idiopathic condition.

Abstract

Background: Periodontitis can decrease a person's quality of life by causing tooth loss making it difficult to eat and decreases the level of self-confidence. Treponema denticola plays an important role in the occurrence of periodontitis. The skin of red dragon fruit (Hylocereus polyrhizus) contains secondary metabolites which are expected to reduce the formation of biofilms that cause periodontitis. Objective: To determine the effect of red dragon fruit peel extract on Treponema denticola biofilm formation. Methods: Laboratory experiment using post-test control group design in vitro with biofilm assay method. Using red dragon fruit peel extract with concentrations of 100%, 50%, 25%, 12.5%, 6.25%, 3.125%, and 1.5625%, chlorhexidine 0.2% as a positive control, and BHI-B as a negative control. The extract was distributed into well plates and incubated for 1, 3, and 24 hours. Biofilm optical density was read using a microplate reader. Results: The normality test results using the Shapiro-Wilk method at the incubation period of 1 hour, 3 hours, and 24 hours showed that the data were normally distributed (p>0.05). The results of the one-way ANOVA test for the three incubation periods showed significantly different data (p<0.05) with p=0.000. The results from Tukey HSD Post-Hoc test showed differences in significance at each concentration at each incubation period. Conclusion: Red dragon fruit peel extract can inhibit the formation of Treponema denticola biofilm.

Abstract

Background: A dermoid cyst can be defined as a confined cavity that contains dermal adnexal structures, such as sebaceous glands, hair follicles, or sweat glands, with a distinct epithelial lining. A congenital dermoid cyst arises from the entrapment of pluripotential ectodermal cells along the lines of fusion between the first and second branchial arches during embryonic life. Case Report: This report presented the case of a 25-year-old woman who complained of a painless swelling on the floor of the mouth that had lasted for six years. An examination revealed ovoid submental swelling extending to the sublingual and submandibular spaces measuring 10 cm x 7 cm x 5 cm with intact skin. The swelling was soft, mobile, and non-tender upon palpation. Intraorally, it occupied the floor of the mouth and displaced the tongue superiorly. A yellowish crystalline aspirate was noted. Ultrasonography revealed a huge, thick-walled, deep-seated cystic mass showing florid mobile internal echoes and few separations on a turbid background with no intracystic solid components or calcification. A posterior–anterior view of the jaws revealed no bony involvement. Conclusion: A dermoid cyst can lead to difficulty in mastication, speech, and respiration and esthetic concerns if left untreated for a very long time. Early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent the occurrence of such complications. Despite the late treatment in this case report, a successful treatment outcome was achieved.

Abstract

Background: Patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection often exhibit diverse oral manifestations, necessitating a dentist’s familiarity with identification and treatment. Case Report: This paper presents a case involving a 23-year-old woman with erythema multiforme on her lips, scalp, and fingers following SARS-CoV-2 infection. The aim of this case report is to disseminate information on oral manifestations following COVID-19. The patient, vaccinated thrice with a booster, initially experienced gum and lip edema with easy bleeding during fever. The condition was confirmed by self-captured images. On the first visit, two days after the antigen test swab was negative, a thick black-yellow crusted lesion on the lips and an itchy lesion on the finger and scalp were observed. Blood tests revealed positive anti-Herpes Simplex Virus IgG, elevated lymphocytes, and increased Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate, leading to a diagnosis of herpes-associated erythema multiforme. Treatment involved topical application of betamethasone and neomycin ointment, supplemented by vitamin B complex, vitamin C, and zinc. Conclusion: The patient showed improvement in three days, with the lesion completely healed in seven days.

Abstract

These are benign overgrowths and have almost no potential for malignancy. They mostly develop around adolescence and slowly grow in size over the years. A 26-year-old patient presented with multiple unilateral bony protuberances on the outer and buccal aspects of the left maxilla. Poor aesthetics was the primary concern of the patient. Although the etiology of buccal exostoses remains unclear, a thorough history, clinical examination, and radiographic features lead to its diagnosis. The bony exostoses were removed through bone shaving. This study presented an uncommon and unique case of multiple unilateral maxillary buccal exostoses, along with their surgical management.

Abstract

Background: Clinacanthus nutans or dandang gendis is a plant that can be an effective herbal treatment for inflammation, in addition that the Indonesian people are still looking for alternative treatments. Research shows that the anti-inflammatory properties of C. nutans leaves are effective in reducing inflammation against fibroblasts. Nitric oxide is one of the inflammatory mediators, that release by fibroblast when inflamed. Objective: To observe the effect of C. nutans leaf chloroform extract on reducing nitric oxide in inflamed fibroblasts. Methods: Fibroblasts stimulated with Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide were treated with chloroform extracts of C. nutans leaves at concentrations of 25, 50, 100, 200 μg/mL for 24 hours, then a nitric oxide inhibition test was performed. Result: The C. nutans leaf extract at a concentration of 200 μg/mL resulted in significantly (p < 0.05) lower nitric oxide production than the negative control. Conclusion: Clinacanthus nutans leaf chloroform extract has the effect of reducing nitric oxide in fibroblasts. This extract has the potential as an anti-inflammatory agent.

Abstract

Background: A vast literature investigated the role of vitamins in wound healing and pain control. In our study, we explored the role of Vitamin C supplementation for various parameters, post periodontal flap surgery in patients with Chronic Generalized Periodontitis. Objectives: (1) to assess and record the Laundry wound healing index and visual analog scale (VAS) score at 3-, 7-, 14- and 30- days postoperative. (2) To determine the gingival healing and oral hygiene status using plaque index Loe and Silness 1964 (PI), Lobene Gingival index 1986 (GI). (3) To determine and compare the pocket depth (PD) and Clinical attachment level (CAL) with and without supplementation at 3, and 6 weeks postoperative. Methods: A randomized triple-blind study was conducted on 60 patient’s half receiving vitamin C supplementation. The VAS score, wound healing index, PI, GI, PD and CAL were determined and compared at different time intervals. Results: Statistical analysis was done for the recorded data. Chi-square test for Healing index and Friedmann’s test followed by Wilcoxon signed-rank test for VAS showed statistically significant results (P<0.05). Friedmann’s test found a statistically significant (P<0.05) result for the PI score only in the test group. Friedmann’s test found the PI to be statistically significant in the test group (P<0.05). Friedmann’s test followed by Wilcoxon signed-rank test found the PD and CAL to be statistically significant (P<0.05) at all different time intervals. Conclusion: In the study, vitamin C supplementation enhanced wound healing and lessened postoperative pain. An instant benefit of vitamin C supplementation was found in this study. A prolonged supplementation and further studies with a considerable sample size would justify the use of vitamin supplementation.

Abstract

Background: Tea is one of the most commonly consumed beverages. The main varieties of tea are black tea, green tea, and oolong tea produced from Camellia sinensis plant. Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine fluoride (F) and other elements in commercially available black and herbal tea products and to evaluate their benefits and safety. Methods: Chinese and Indian black teas and herbal tea (in bags or loose) were purchased from Hong Kong supermarkets. The tea infusion was prepared by adding 1 gram of tea leaves to 100 mL of deionized water preheated to 85oC. Samples were taken at regular intervals and analyzed for F, using the F− electrode. Trace elements in tea infusion was assessed using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Results: Fluoride concentrations in infused 15 brands of Chinese tea ranged from 0.78 to 3.46 ppm (mg/L), with a mean of 1.73 ± 0.73 (SD). The corresponding values for 11 Indian teas ranged from 0.73 to 1.91, with a mean of 1.24 ± 0.32. In 6 herbal teas, the F concentration is almost negligible. The total F content in tea leaves ranged from 82 to 371 mg/kg. During 5 to 15 minutes of brewing, the mean (± SD) F released was 83.6 ± 12.1% of the total F in the leaves. Conclusions: Tea is a homogeneous, complex solution of bioactive organic and inorganic ingredients that benefits oral and systemic health. It has a higher F content than any other plant. Drinking tea in moderation, F is unlikely to cause a dental fluorosis on its own, but it can significantly increase daily F intake. The safety of trace elements in tea is less than factor 1, (i.e., the allowable limit).

Abstract

Background: Out of its various derivatives, low molecular weight (LMW) chitosan is known to have improved solubility and antifungal properties. Nystatin the standard antifungal drug discontinued from therapy due to resistant Candida strains emerged. Objectives: This study aims to compare the previously obtained results of the antifungal capacity of low molecular weight chitosan and nystatin against Candida albicans biofilm on Triplex heat-cure denture bases after 7 and 14 days with their antifungal efficacy on Trevalon-High Impact (HI) heat-cure denture bases. Methods: A Trevalon heat-cure with HI, utilizing the typical compression molding process, was employed to create 10 specimens from Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA) acrylic resin. All specimens were pre-treated with imitation saliva for 72hours to development of biofilm. Two groups of five specimens each were established. On the fourth day after biofilm formation, Group A was immersed in LMW chitosan solution, whereas Group B was immersed in a nystatin solution. On the 11th day, the specimens were treated again using antifungal suspension, as per the assigned groups, and the complete maturation of the residual biofilm was allowed to occur until the 14th day. Results: The results in Nystatin group demonstrated a substantial reduction of 5 times or more in the Colony Forming Units (CFU) of Candida colonies in the biofilm from the 7th to the 14th day. On the other hand, in Chitosan group, the CFU of Candida colonies showed an insignificant decrease. When comparing CFU between both groups at one week, a nonsignificant reduction while a significantly lower CFU count was noted at 14th day in the chitosan group compared to the nystatin group, with a significant p-value of 0.002. Conclusion: The current study results suggest the potential for expanding the use of chitosan in denture-wearing patients in the future, contributing to the maintenance of optimal dental and overall health.

Abstract

Pathogenic biofilms contribute to several oral problems, including caries, periodontitis, and other infections. Chlorhexidine has long been considered the gold standard for chemical dental plaque control. However, it is accompanied by adverse effects, such as taste alterations, staining, and cytotoxicity. In response to these challenges, herbal mouthwashes have emerged as a promising alternative treatment, with fewer drawbacks. The primary aim of this review was to assess the effectiveness of herbal mouthwashes in comparison to chlorhexidine. Adhering to the PRISMA guidelines, this review focused on questions concerning the effectiveness of herbal mouthwashes compared to chlorhexidine. A systematic search was executed in prominent databases, including PubMed, SpringerLink, ScienceDirect, and Wiley. Using predefined keywords, five articles were selected for inclusion in the review and subsequent research synthesis. The review findings suggest that herbal mouthwashes exhibit effectiveness comparable to chlorhexidine, accompanied by the added benefit of fewer side effects. However, further research is needed to comprehensively evaluate the long-term safety and efficacy of herbal mouthwash.
