Microscopic detection of worm eggs in fecal specimens requires preservation if the examination cannot be performed immediately. Formalin is widely used as a preservative, but its effectiveness at different concentrations in maintaining the integrity of worm eggs remains unclear. This study aims to evaluate the effect of varying concentrations of formalin on the development of Ascaris lumbricoides eggs in preserved stool specimens. This study used a pure experimental design with a randomized posttest-only control group. Twenty-four faecal specimens containing Ascaris lumbricoides eggs were treated with formalin at concentrations of 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, and 30%, and one control group without formalin. Samples were determined using purposive sampling techniques. Egg development was observed microscopically after preservation, and the data were analyzed using a one-way analysis of variance. The results showed no statistically significant differences in egg development between all formalin treatment groups and the control group. These findings indicate that increasing formalin concentration does not enhance its effectiveness in inhibiting the development of Ascaris lumbricoides eggs. The commonly used formalin concentration may not be optimal for preserving fecal specimens intended for detailed morphological assessment of eggs, highlighting the need for alternative preservation strategies in routine diagnostic practice.

Inefficiencies in blood procurement remain a challenge in transfusion services, potentially leading to unnecessary resource utilization. However, comparative studies on the efficiency of blood use among preoperative and non-preoperative patients remain limited. This study aims to evaluate and compare the efficiency of blood use using the crossmatch-to-transfusion (C/T) ratio indicator in both patient groups at a regional hospital. This study employed a retrospective analytical design based on secondary data from the hospital's blood bank registry. A total of 16,554 units of blood collected over 20 months were used as the sample, selected through a total sampling approach. Data analysis employed descriptive statistics and the paired samples t-test to identify differences between groups. The results indicated that blood usage in preoperative patients tended to be less efficient, with the majority of C/T ratios exceeding the recommended efficiency threshold. In contrast, the C/T ratios for non-preoperative patients remained consistently within the efficient category. Statistical analysis also confirmed significant and meaningful differences between the two groups. The findings underscore the need to implement evidence-based blood ordering strategies, such as the Maximum Surgical Blood Order Schedule (MSBOS) and type-and-screen protocols, to improve efficiency and optimize transfusion practices in clinical care.

Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) is frequently accompanied by hematological alterations that play an important role in diagnosis and clinical monitoring. Leukocyte count, hematocrit value, and platelet count are among the routine hematological parameters commonly evaluated in patients with dengue infection. This study aimed to determine the correlation of leukocyte and hematocrit values with platelet counts in patients with dengue hemorrhagic fever at Wangaya Regional General Hospital, Denpasar City. An analytic observational study with a cross-sectional approach was conducted using secondary data from medical records and laboratory results of 91 DHF patients selected through purposive sampling. Data were analyzed using univariate analysis and the Pearson correlation test. The results indicated that leukocyte counts were not significantly correlated with platelet counts, whereas hematocrit was. These findings highlight the potential value of hematocrit as a relevant hematological parameter in the evaluation of DHF and may support the clinical interpretation of routine complete blood count results in dengue patients.

Anemia remains a major nutritional problem among adolescent girls and may have long-term consequences if not properly addressed. This study was conducted to assess the effect of combined iron and vitamin C supplementation on hemoglobin levels among adolescent girls. A pre-experimental study with a one-group pretest–posttest design was conducted involving 30 anemic female students at a junior high school in Kintamani, Indonesia. Participants received iron tablets together with vitamin C supplementation, and hemoglobin levels were measured before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. A significant increase in hemoglobin levels was observed after the intervention. These results indicate that the combination of iron and vitamin C contributes to improved hemoglobin status. The integration of vitamin C into anemia prevention programs, particularly in school-based settings, may enhance the effectiveness of existing interventions. In addition, the use of point-of-care testing is important to support accurate monitoring of hemoglobin levels in resource-limited environments.

Soil-transmitted helminth infection remains a persistent public health concern, particularly among school-aged children who are frequently exposed to contaminated environments and may have suboptimal personal hygiene practices. This study aimed to identify the presence of soil-transmitted helminth eggs in students’ fingernails at an elementary school in Bali, Indonesia. A descriptive cross-sectional design was employed, involving 30 students selected through purposive sampling. Fingernail samples were collected and examined using the flotation method with saturated sodium chloride solution, followed by microscopic observation. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics to determine the distribution of positive and negative findings. The results showed that a small proportion of samples were positive for helminth eggs, with only Ascaris lumbricoides identified, while the majority of samples were negative. These findings suggest that although fingernails can serve as a potential medium for helminth transmission, the level of contamination in this population appears relatively low. Nevertheless, the presence of positive cases indicates the continued importance of maintaining proper personal hygiene, particularly handwashing and regular nail care. This study highlights the relevance of simple preventive measures and supports the role of school-based hygiene education in reducing the risk of helminth infection among children.

Pyrazinamide and ethambutol are essential components of anti-tuberculosis therapy; however, both drugs can affect uric acid metabolism and increase the risk of hyperuricemia. Elevated uric acid levels may potentially cause joint pain and other metabolic disorders that can affect patient adherence to therapy. This study aims to analyze changes in serum uric acid levels before and after the administration of pyrazinamide–ethambutol combination therapy in tuberculosis patients. The study employed a retrospective analytical observational design using secondary data from the medical records of tuberculosis patients undergoing treatment at three type D regional general hospitals in West Jakarta. A sample of 100 patients was selected using a total sampling method. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics and a paired-samples t-test. The results showed an increase in the mean serum uric acid levels in both male and female patients after four weeks of therapy. Male patients had higher uric acid levels than females, although the increase was significant in both groups. These findings suggest that pyrazinamide–ethambutol combination therapy leads to an increase in serum uric acid levels during the intensive phase of tuberculosis treatment. Therefore, regular monitoring of uric acid levels is essential for early detection of hyperuricemia and for optimizing patient management in tuberculosis.
