Medical Laboratory Science Journal (MedLab) is a peer-reviewed journal that publishes high-quality scholarly articles focusing on advances in the science, education, and application of medical laboratory technology. Phlebotomy is a critical component of the pre-analytical stage in laboratory diagnostics, accounting for most laboratory errors. Inadequate phlebotomy practices, often due to limited knowledge, can lead to specimen rejection and compromise diagnostic accuracy. This study examined the relationship between medical laboratory technologists' knowledge of phlebotomy and the quality of collected blood specimens. An analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted across clinical laboratories. A total of 56 participants were selected using total sampling. Phlebotomy knowledge was assessed through a structured questionnaire, while specimen quality was evaluated via direct observation. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Chi-square test. The findings revealed varying levels of phlebotomy knowledge and a moderate proportion of unacceptable specimens. A significant association was identified between knowledge levels and specimen quality. These results underscore the importance of strengthening pre-analytical competencies through continuous education and targeted institutional support. Enhancing phlebotomy training can improve specimen integrity, reduce laboratory errors, and support broader efforts to advance diagnostic reliability and healthcare quality.

Reporting critical laboratory values is a vital aspect of healthcare services as it directly relates to patient safety. Compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs) for reporting critical values is strongly influenced by various factors, including workload. This study employed an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach, involving all 25 laboratory personnel at BaliMed Hospital Buleleng as the sample using a total sampling technique. Data were collected through questionnaires and observation sheets, and analyzed using the chi-square test. The statistical results showed a significant relationship between workload and compliance, indicating that most respondents experienced a high workload but still demonstrated high compliance with SOPs for reporting critical values. The findings suggest that despite demanding workloads, staff maintained high procedural compliance. These results underscore the importance of institutional support in managing workload distribution to ensure sustained quality and accuracy in laboratory reporting practices. The study offers insights into optimizing laboratory performance and reinforces the relevance of workload management in strengthening procedural adherence and patient safety.

The selection of donors based on smoking habits is an important process to ensure the availability of safe, high-quality blood. This study aims to analyze the correlation between smoking habits and blood hemoglobin levels in men at the Indonesian Red Cross Blood Transfusion Unit in Balikpapan. An analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted involving 99 male donors who were purposively selected based on their smoking intensity. Hemoglobin levels were measured using a standard hematology analyzer, while smoking habits were evaluated through structured interviews. Data were analyzed using Pearson's correlation test to evaluate the relationship between smoking categories and hemoglobin levels. The results showed a significant positive correlation, with higher smoking intensity associated with increased hemoglobin concentration. These findings confirm the physiological mechanism of compensatory erythropoiesis in smokers and highlight the importance of considering lifestyle factors during donor selection. This study provides insight into the hematological effects of smoking in clinical practice.

Clinical pathology laboratory services play an essential role in supporting patient diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. The high number of outpatient visits to laboratories poses challenges in terms of timeliness, facility availability, and staff responsiveness, which can affect patient satisfaction. This study aims to analyze the relationship between the quality of clinical pathology laboratory services and the satisfaction of outpatients at Restu Ibu Hospital in Balikpapan. The study design uses a quantitative correlational approach with a cross-sectional method, involving 175 respondents selected through purposive sampling. The research instrument was a questionnaire covering service quality and patient satisfaction, with data analysis using Spearman's correlation test. The results showed that most patients rated the laboratory services as good and expressed satisfaction with the services received. Additionally, a significant positive relationship was found between service quality and patient satisfaction. These findings emphasize the need for continuous improvement in physical facilities, service quickness, and empathetic communication by medical personnel to strengthen service quality and increase patient satisfaction

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a common health problem characterized by an increase in the number of leukocytes, erythrocytes, and bacteria in urine sediment. The accuracy of urine tests is greatly influenced by specimen handling, particularly sedimentation time, so delays in testing can potentially affect laboratory results and lead to misdiagnosis. This study aims to analyze the effect of sedimentation delay on the results of leukocyte, erythrocyte, and bacterial tests in the urine of patients with suspected UTI. The study used a quantitative design with a cross-sectional approach and was conducted in the laboratory of Buleleng Regional General Hospital. A total of 30 urine samples from patients suspected of having UTI were examined immediately after collection, after a 30-minute delay, and after a 60-minute delay. The data were analyzed using a one-way ANOVA test to assess the differences in results between examination times. The results showed that delays of up to 60 minutes did not significantly affect the number of leukocytes, erythrocytes, or bacteria in the urine sediment. These findings confirm that although immediate examination remains the standard, delays of up to one hour are acceptable without compromising the quality of laboratory results. Therefore, urine specimens need to be managed appropriately to ensure diagnostic accuracy, and laboratory policies need to take into account operational conditions in the care of patients with suspected UTI.

Urine sediment examination supports the diagnosis and monitoring of kidney and urinary tract disorders. One pre-analytical factor that can potentially affect the accuracy of urine sediment examination results is variation in urine specimen volume. This study aims to analyze the effect of urine volume variation on crystal findings in urine sediment examination. This study used an experimental design with 30 urine specimens from patients undergoing complete urine examination. Urine specimens were treated in three volume variations, namely twelve milliliters, eight milliliters, and five milliliters, then microscopic examination of urine sediment was performed to identify crystal findings. The data were analyzed using comparative statistical methods to assess differences in crystal findings across urine volumes. The results showed that urine volume variation significantly affected the number of crystals detected, with a tendency for fewer crystals as urine volume decreased. A higher urine volume resulted in greater crystal detection sensitivity than a lower one. These findings emphasize the importance of controlling pre-analytical factors, particularly urine volume, in urine sediment examination. Therefore, clinical laboratories need to establish minimum urine volume standards to improve the reliability of examination results.

Lead exposure in automotive workshop environments is a significant occupational health problem because it can lead to heavy metal accumulation in the blood and affect various organ systems. Workshop workers are at high risk of lead exposure through inhalation and direct contact during vehicle maintenance and repair activities. This study aims to analyze lead levels in blood specimens from automotive workshop workers measured using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The study used a cross-sectional, observational, analytical design. The research subjects were automotive workshop workers in Banjar Karangsari who met the inclusion criteria. Nine blood samples were taken according to clinical laboratory procedures and measured using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The data were analyzed descriptively and analytically to describe the distribution of lead levels and their relationship with respondent characteristics. The results showed that automotive workshop workers had varying blood lead levels, with a tendency to increase in individuals with longer working hours and higher exposure intensity. The findings indicate that there are health risks due to lead exposure in the workshop work environment, which need to be addressed by increasing understanding of occupational safety and health in the informal sector.

Chronic kidney disease refers to a progressive condition characterized by an irreversible decline in kidney function and generally requires hemodialysis therapy. This therapy can affect hemoglobin levels, which play an important role in oxygen transport and metabolic balance. This study aims to describe hemoglobin levels before and after hemodialysis in patients with chronic kidney disease. The study is a descriptive quantitative approach with a sample of 30 patients undergoing routine hemodialysis, selected using total sampling. Venous blood samples were collected before and after hemodialysis and analyzed using an automated hematology analyzer based on electrical impedance. The data were analyzed descriptively to characterize the distribution of hemoglobin levels and changes in hemoglobin levels during hemodialysis. The results indicated that most patients had hemoglobin levels below the reference value both before and after hemodialysis, with a tendency to decrease after hemodialysis. This pattern was observed across age groups and genders, suggesting that hemodialysis may contribute to changes in hemoglobin levels. These findings emphasize the importance of routine hematological monitoring in hemodialysis patients as part of clinical laboratory services to support early detection and management of anemia in chronic kidney disease.

Typhoid fever remains a significant public health problem in endemic areas, so accurate and timely diagnosis is crucial in supporting clinical management. Serological testing for immunoglobulin M antibodies has been widely used to support early diagnosis, especially in health care facilities with limited laboratory resources. This study aimed to describe the immunoglobulin M antibody profile in patients with a clinical diagnosis of typhoid fever who underwent serological testing at a general hospital. This study used a descriptive observational design with a cross-sectional approach. Venous blood samples were taken from 20 patients suspected of having typhoid fever and analyzed using an immunochromatography test. Data analysis was performed descriptively. The results showed that most patients had positive immunoglobulin M test results. It indicates the presence of acute or ongoing infection. Meanwhile, the rest showed negative results, likely because testing was performed early in the infection before optimal antibody levels. These findings confirm the role of immunoglobulin M testing as a relevant diagnostic tool in detecting acute typhoid fever. Interpretation of serology results needs to consider the clinical context and timing of sample collection in order to make clinical decisions more accurate in healthcare practice.

Chronic kidney failure is a progressive condition characterized by a decline in kidney function, leading to an inability to eliminate metabolic waste from the body. Hemodialysis is used as a renal replacement therapy to assist in the blood cleansing process and maintain the patient's physiological balance. This study aims to analyze differences in serum creatinine levels in patients with chronic kidney failure before and after undergoing hemodialysis at the Bali Husada Cipta Canthi Clinic in Denpasar City. The study used an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach to 18 patients with end-stage chronic kidney failure, selected through total sampling. Serum creatinine levels were obtained from laboratory tests before and after a single hemodialysis session. The analysis used a paired sample t-test. The results showed a decrease in serum creatinine levels after hemodialysis compared with pre-procedure levels. It indicates the therapy's effectiveness in reducing the accumulation of metabolic waste in the blood. However, post-hemodialysis creatinine levels remained above normal reference values, reflecting the limitations of hemodialysis in entirely replacing kidney function. These findings emphasize the importance of monitoring serum creatinine as a clinical indicator of therapeutic response. Patients with chronic renal failure need to undergo hemodialysis consistently and continuously.
