Abstract

Objective: To compare the efficacy of sperm preparation techniques modified by two layer density gradient technique (80%, 40%).     Methods: Sperm preparation was performed by two- and three-layer density gradient technique by centrifugation at 500 rpm for 20 minutes using SpermGrad (Vitrolife, Sweden).    Results: The average concentration of total sperm preparation by two-layer density gradient was 23.19 million with a standard deviation of 11.9 million while the result of three-layer density gradient preparation obtained a mean total sperm concentration of 19.64 million with a standard deviation of 10.033 million. The mean total concentration of sperm in three-layer was lower than two-layer density gradient with p <0.001.Conclusions: This study concludes that there was a significant difference between the concentration of sperm prepared using two-layer and three-layers density gradient technique. Keywords: Density gradient, spermatozoa DOI: 10.15850/ijihs.v2n1.286

Abstract

Objective: The presentation of cystic meningioma in the inter-hemispheric near the falx cerebri is uncommon. It is difficult to differentiate it from intra-axial tumors, such as gliomas. Therefore, it is likely that it is misdiagnosed as other types of brain tumors. Methods: In this study, we reported a cystic meningioma case in the inter-hemispheric location, showing an intramural nodule on magnetic resonance imaging scans. Results: Patient underwent surgical treatment and pathological section confirmation revealing meningioma. The patient was a middle-age woman and had been misdiagnosed as suffering from glioma followed by slight hemipharesis on the right extremities. Conclusions: Although this is a rare case, it will be good if we always consider cystic meningioma in inter-hemispheric space when diagnosing this type of cystic lesion if the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) shows a cystic lesion mimicking glioma image presentation. Keywords: Cystic meningioma, interhemispheric space, magnetic resonance imaging, diagnosis DOI: 10.15850/ijihs.v4n1.686

Abstract

Objective: To measure the glycemic index of brown and white rice in healthy adult men. Methods: The study was conducted in April 2010 at Universitas Padjadjaran, Jatinangor. Subjects of 21 healthy male students were randomly divided into 3 groups, which were given white bread (WB), white rice (WR) and brown rice (BR). Results: The results show that the highest and lowest average values of the blood glucose response was in the WR group at 30 minutes (126.9 mg/dL) and at 120 minutes (87.4 mg/dL), respectively. The glycemic index of brown rice (97.28) was lower compared to the white rice (99.26). Conclusions: Both WR and BR are classified as high glycemic index food. The higher glycemic index of brown rice, compared to the index found in other literatures, may be caused by differences in variant and/or production process. This study suggested the importance of evaluation of local products before promoting it to the community.     Keywords: Blood glucose level, brown rice, glycemic index DOI: 10.15850/ijihs.v1n1.106

Abstract

Objective: Preeclampsia is still a problem in Indonesia due to the high maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. Placental soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFlt-1), an antagonist of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and placental growth factor (PIGF), is considered as one of the etiology factors that cause endothelial damage in preeclampsia due to increased sFlt-1 level modulating vascular endothelial integrity. This study aims to analyze sFlt-1 and sFlt-1 mRNA levels in severe preeclampsia and normal pregnancy, and the correlation between both in occurrence of severe preeclampsia. Methods: This is a cross-sectional analytic observational study involving 18 subjects with severe preeclampsia and 19 subjects with normal pregnancy as controls who met inclusion and exclusion criteria. Levels of sFlt-1 and sFlt-1 mRNA were measured with ELISA and RT PCR. Statistical analysis was performed with Chi square test, Fisher’s exact test, T-test, Mann-Whitney test, and Spearman’s rank correlation test. Results: This study showed no significant difference (p>0.05) in characteristics of maternal age, gestational age, and parity in both study groups. Mean level of sFlt-1 mRNA in severe preeclampsia was higher (6.3404 pg/mL) compared to its level in normal pregnancy (5.9701 pg/mL). There is a not significant (p>0.05) positive correlation between sFlt-1 mRNA with sFlt-1 level in normal pregnancy, and a not significant (p>0.05) negative correlation between both level in severe preeclampsia. Conclusions: sFlt-1 mRNA levels in severe preeclampsia are higher than its level in normal pregnancy. There is no correlation between sFlt-1 mRNA level and sFLt-1 protein level in severe preeclampsia. There is a not significant positive correlation between sFlt-1 mRNA with sFlt-1 level in normal pregnancy, and a not significant negative correlation between both in severe preeclampsia. Keywords: Normal pregnancy, severe preeclampsia, sFlt-1 mRNA DOI: 10.15850/ijihs.v3n2.586
