Abstract

This study presents a quantitative analytical evaluation of an integrated ESP32-based smart home system for environmental monitoring, hazard detection, and proximity sensing connected via the Blynk cloud platform. The prototype incorporates a DHT11 sensor for ambient temperature and relative humidity, an MQ-2 semiconductor sensor for LPG leak detection, and an HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor for distance measurement. Experimental evaluation across repeated continuous trials demonstrated reliable real-time data acquisition and multi-channel alert delivery via Blynk push notifications and automated emails. Statistical analysis against reference instruments revealed high accuracy for the DHT11 sensor, achieving a Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 1.05°C (RMSE = 1.15°C) for temperature and an MAE of 1.15% (RMSE = 1.27%) for relative humidity, both well within commercial manufacturer tolerances. The HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor operated accurately over a 5 to 60 cm distance range with an overall MAE of 0.92 cm (RMSE = 0.96 cm). Overall, the proposed system delivers a robust, cost-effective solution for smart residential monitoring and serves as a highly practical instructional trainer kit for IoT and electrical engineering education.

Abstract

Hydroponic cultivation requires precise control of nutrient concentration and pH, while manual monitoring and adjustment may result in inconsistent nutrient conditions and increased labor requirements. This study aimed to develop and evaluate an ESP32-S3-based automated hydroponic nutrient management system for water filling, nutrient dosing, pH adjustment, circulation verification, and scheduled nutrient solution replacement. A quantitative Research and Development (R&D) approach was employed to design, implement, and evaluate the system, integrating EC/TDS, pH, ultrasonic, water flow, temperature and humidity sensors, a real-time clock, peristaltic pumps, solenoid valves, a circulation pump, and a 20×4 I2C LCD. Experimental testing included sensor calibration, actuator functional testing, flow-based safety interlock testing, and integrated system operation. The results showed that the pH sensor achieved a maximum measurement error of 0.43%, while the EC sensor produced errors of 5.16–13.23% at 1.413 mS/cm and 2.17–2.95% at 12.88 mS/cm. The ultrasonic sensor produced errors of 0% in four measurements and 5% in one measurement. The flow sensor successfully distinguished flow and no-flow conditions and prevented nutrient and pH dosing when circulation was absent. The peristaltic pumps achieved an average flow rate of 0.908 mL/s, and the integrated system completed the tested automation sequence. However, testing was limited by the number of calibration points and short-duration functional evaluation, with no assessment of long-term nutrient stability, repeated dosing accuracy, or plant-growth performance.

Abstract

This study developed and evaluated an Arduino Uno R4 Minima-based automatic pump control system for managing water distribution between two storage tanks using three HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensors, two 12 V DC pumps, four solenoid valves, a relay module, and a 20×4 LCD monitoring interface. A quantitative Research and Development approach was employed to design, integrate, and experimentally test the system under controlled laboratory conditions. The ultrasonic sensors continuously monitored water levels in the two storage tanks and the main reservoir, while the microcontroller controlled-pump and solenoid valve operation according to predefined water-level conditions. The system was evaluated under seven operating scenarios involving dual-pump, single-pump, alternating, standby, and no-water conditions. The HC-SR04 sensors achieved an average measurement error of 1.78% and an average accuracy of 98.22%. All seven system operating scenarios were successfully executed according to the designed control logic. The main technical contribution of the proposed system is the integration of two pumps, multiple solenoid valves, and real-time water-level monitoring to enable flexible automatic distribution between two storage tanks. The results indicate that the developed prototype can reliably perform automatic pump and valve control under controlled experimental conditions, while further testing is required to assess long-term reliability, hydraulic performance, energy consumption, and field-scale applicability.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the feasibility of a Fiber To The Home (FTTH) infrastructure based on Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON), evaluate the performance of a 4 Play network integrating Internet, Internet Protocol Television (IPTV), Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), and Internet of Things (IoT), and examine the effect of Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) implementation on service quality. An experimental method was employed by implementing an FTTH-GPON network with three Optical Network Terminals (ONTs). Link feasibility was analyzed using the Link Power Budget, while service performance was evaluated based on throughput, delay, jitter, and packet loss using iPerf3 and Ping under network conditions with and without VLAN. The measured optical power at the three ONTs ranged from −6.63 to −6.33 dBm and remained within the GPON device sensitivity limit. Adding IoT traffic to the network without VLAN reduced the performance of several services. VLAN implementation increased VoIP throughput from 57.6 to 95.4 Mbps and Internet throughput from 95.3 to 99.8 Mbps. VLAN also reduced jitter by up to 95.8% for IoT and 89.1% for IPTV, while IPTV packet loss decreased from 56% to 3.5% and VoIP from 1.2% to 0%. The testing was limited to a specific network configuration and environment. The findings indicate that VLAN can provide an effective traffic-segmentation strategy for maintaining the stability and quality of 4 Play services under simultaneous traffic conditions.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of the peer teaching approach in improving learning outcomes and to identify students’ responses in the Basic Principles of Visual Communication Design (DDKV) subject at SMKN 1 Masjid Raya. A quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design was employed. The participants were 24 tenth-grade Multimedia students in the 2025/2026 academic year. Data were collected through a pre-test, post-test, and a student response questionnaire. Learning outcomes were analyzed by comparing students’ achievement before and after the learning intervention, while questionnaire data were analyzed using response percentages across the measured aspects. The results showed that the students’ mean score increased from 86.67 in the pre-test to 97.50 in the post-test. The number of students who did not meet the minimum competency criterion decreased from three to one. Overall, students’ responses to the peer teaching approach reached 97.64%, categorized as “very interested.” The highest response was recorded for the influence of the approach on material comprehension, reaching 100%. The findings indicate that peer teaching can serve as an alternative approach for DDKV learning by supporting student interaction and material comprehension. However, the study was limited to 24 students and did not include a control group; therefore, the observed improvement cannot be attributed entirely to peer teaching. Future research should involve larger samples, control groups, and different learning materials or vocational competencies.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the implementation of a forward-reverse teaching aid for a single-phase induction motor as a learning medium and to identify changes in students’ understanding in the Electric Motor Control Practicum. A quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design was employed. The participants were 12 students. Data were collected through pretests, posttests, and a student response questionnaire following learning activities using the forward-reverse teaching aid. The findings showed that the students’ mean score increased from 83.33 in the pretest to 90.83 in the posttest, representing an increase of 7.50 points. The teaching aid enabled students to connect their understanding of control circuits with direct observation of contactors, push buttons, timers, overload relays, interlocking systems, and changes in motor rotation. Students’ responses to the teaching aid reached 78.33%, categorized as agree. The study was limited to 12 students and employed a single-group design without a control group; therefore, the observed improvement cannot be attributed solely to the teaching aid. The assessment also focused primarily on conceptual understanding rather than detailed practical skills. The findings imply that the teaching aid can support practical learning by connecting theoretical concepts with concrete learning experiences.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the implementation of a Thermal Overload Relay (TOR) training aid in an Electric Motor Control Laboratory and to determine changes in students’ understanding of the function, current setting, and working principles of motor overload protection. A quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental One Group Pretest–Posttest design was employed. The participants were 12 students in an Electrical Engineering Education program. Data were collected through pretests, posttests, and a student response questionnaire. The data were analyzed using mean scores, mastery percentages, Normalized Gain (N-Gain), and student response percentages. The mean score increased from 70.83 in the pretest to 79.17 in the posttest, while the mastery rate increased from 66.67% to 83.33%. The mean N-Gain was 0.38, indicating a moderate level of improvement. Student responses to the training aid reached 78.33%, categorized as agree. These findings indicate improved understanding following hands-on learning with the TOR, although the improvement varied among students. The study was limited to 12 students and did not include a comparison group; therefore, the observed improvement cannot be attributed solely to the TOR training aid. The findings imply that TOR-based practical learning should be accompanied by demonstrations, repeated practice, and instructional guidance to support more consistent conceptual and practical learning outcomes.

Abstract

This study aims to design and test a microcontroller-based prototype for detecting electrical leakage current in household electrical networks and evaluate its performance based on current measurement, response time, warning indicators, and relay control. The study employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the 4D model (Define, Design, Develop, Disseminate) and was conducted up to the Develop stage. The prototype integrated an Arduino Uno R3 WiFi, ACS712 current sensor, 16×2 I2C LCD, LEDs, buzzer, relay, and ESP8266 NodeMCU. Testing was conducted using 10 W, 15 W, 25 W, and 40 W lamps and an electric fan. Measured current, response time, alarm status, and relay status were recorded. The measured current ranged from 0.133 to 0.460 A, while the response time ranged from 3.16 to 3.99 seconds. All tested loads remained in normal conditions, with no alarm activation and the relay remaining ON. These findings indicate that the prototype can monitor current and provide system responses according to the tested conditions. The testing did not include controlled leakage-current conditions. Therefore, the prototype's detection and disconnection performance under actual leakage conditions has not been comprehensively validated. Further research should incorporate controlled leakage levels, calibrated reference instruments, repeated testing, and cloud-based IoT development.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the condition of electrical laboratory facilities, students’ practical competence in electrical measurement, and the relationship between laboratory facilities and the competence of Grade X Electrical Power Installation Engineering (TITL) students at SMK Negeri 3 Tondano. A quantitative approach with an ex post facto design was employed. All 30 Grade X TITL students were selected using saturated sampling. Laboratory facility data were collected through questionnaires and observation, while practical competence data were obtained from observation and documented practical scores. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and simple linear regression. Laboratory facilities obtained a mean score of 124.47, equivalent to 82.98%, and were categorized as very good. Students’ practical competence had a mean score of 20.43, equivalent to 81.73%, and was also categorized as very good. Regression analysis showed a statistically significant but negative relationship (β = −0.412; p = 0.024), with R² = 0.169. Thus, laboratory facilities accounted for 16.9% of the variance in practical competence. The study was limited to 30 students from one class and included laboratory facilities as the sole predictor. The findings indicate that practical competence is multifactorial and should be considered alongside student readiness, practice intensity, instructional strategies, learning experiences, and teacher guidance.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the effect of using Google NotebookLM on the learning outcomes of Grade X students in the Basic Electricity and Electronics subject at SMK Negeri 3 Tondano. A quantitative approach was employed using a quasi-experimental method with a pretest-posttest control group design. The sample consisted of 29 students selected through purposive sampling, including 15 students in the experimental group and 14 students in the control group. The experimental group learned using Google NotebookLM, while the control group received conventional instruction. Data were collected using a cognitive learning outcome test consisting of 20 multiple-choice items administered before and after the learning intervention. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Lilliefors normality test, Levene’s homogeneity test, and an independent-samples t-test. The mean score of the experimental group increased from 61.33 to 85.33, whereas the control group increased from 58.92 to 69.28. The t-test yielded t-calculated = 4.191, which was higher than t-critical = 2.05 at the 0.05 significance level. The findings indicate a difference in learning outcomes between the two groups. The study was limited to 29 students from one school and used purposive sampling; therefore, the findings should be interpreted within the study context. Google NotebookLM can serve as a supporting learning medium while teachers remain actively involved in guiding learning activities and reinforcing concepts.
