Abstract

This article, embracing Laruelle’s observation that Kazakhstan “presents itself as a bridge linking the Western, Muslim, and Asian worlds” critically explores the intricate dynamics of cultural reframing and identity reconstruction amid post-Soviet nationalist mobilization. Kazakhstan’s steadfast commitment to projecting a ‘bridge image’ for strategic geopolitical advantages is evident through state-mechanized ‘nation branding’ strategies within a ‘soft-authoritarian’ secular political environment conducive to nationalist mobilization. The article methodologically investigates the role of Islam, often obscured in this context, through an analysis of “elite responses” reflecting the state’s stance on religion. The theoretical examination substantiated by thematic analysis of ethnographic data unveils that Islam, strategically instrumentalized for political objectives, exerts a profound influence on the “collective consciousness” of the local populace, predominantly composed of ethnic Kazakhs. This influence significantly contributes to the nuanced [re]construction of tradition, identity, and culture in post-Soviet Kazakhstan, thereby shedding light on the interconnectedness of state-driven narratives, political strategies, and the pivotal role played by Islam in shaping the cultural and identity landscape of the region.

Abstract

This study investigates the relationship between ideological beliefs, perceptions of national ideology, and tendencies toward violence among students at Islamic senior high schools (Madrasah Aliyah) across East Java, Indonesia. The research addresses growing concerns over youth exposure to radical ideologies within educational and digital environments. Using a cross-sectional quantitative design, data were collected through a validated questionnaire administered to 1,167 students selected by stratified random sampling from state and private schools across urban and rural areas. The instrument measured ideological orientation, religious tolerance, and justification of violence. Michel Foucault’s theory of knowledge and power provides the analytical framework to understand how ideological discourses from families, educators, religious authorities, and online sources influence students’ worldviews. The findings reveal a significant paradox: whereas 87.5 percent of students support Pancasila, the national ideology, and 12.5 percent favor religion-based ideologies such as the khilafah. Moreover, 21 percent endorse intolerant views that may lead to violent attitudes. This ideological ambivalence suggests a fragmentation of civic identity shaped by competing sources of influence. The study underscores the urgent need for integrative educational strategies involving parents, teachers, religious leaders, and digital literacy programs to prevent ideological radicalization and reinforce inclusive civic values among youth.

Abstract

The paper tries to elaborate the ideas of Hisham Sharabi on Neo-patriarchy culture and its relevance to the current situations. He perceived that Neo-patriarchy as one of main causes of the Arab crisis. According to him, the Arab societies in general did not adopt modernism in its real form. Therefore, rather transforming into modern society they turned into “distorted modernism.” The data of this research particularly are Sharabi’s works that were published during 1980s as crucial period of his intellectual journey. The paper found three major conclusions on neo-patriarchy culture postulated by Sharabi: 1) neo-patriarchy culture is the real form of Arab’s failure in transforming its societies into modern one, it reflected such as in authoritarian political system, economic dependent and social-political fragmentation; 2) criticism is pre-conditions for modern Arab societies’ transformation. One of the efforts to achieve real modernism according to Sharabi is to deconstruct some distorted definitions of democracy, civil society, etc., and build fresh meaning of the terms.

Abstract

This study aims to demonstrate the Jordanian Hashemites’ custodianship of the Islamic sanctities in Jerusalem and their role in preserving its Islamic identity from the attempts of Judaization exposed by the Israeli State. The reigns of his Majesty King Abdullah I and King Hussein (kings of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan) were taken as a model for the study, by presenting the most prominent services provided to Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem, such as restoration, renovation, rebuilding, and providing financial and non-financial support to these sanctities. The study concludes that the Hashemites’ custodianship of the Islamic sanctities in Jerusalem was not only connected with the Jordanian-Palestinian relations, but also came out of the Hashemites’ faith in their religious and national duty to preserve Jerusalem identity and stand in the face of any attempt to Judaize, control and divide Jerusalem. This custody began since the era of Sharif Hussein bin Ali and it has continued to the present time.

Abstract

The Muslim personality represents a crucial synthesis of various components, including aqidah (faith), akhlaq (Islamic ethics), sharia (Islamic law), ibadah (Islamic worship), and other relevant aspects. Devout Muslims prioritize virtues such as compassion, integrity, humility, and respect in their daily lives. Additionally, their personalities are influenced by teachings that emphasize empathy, generosity, and mindfulness. This research seeks to outline the necessity of developing a Muslim Personality Model specifically tailored for Hijrah’s Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in Malaysia, particularly in relation to lesbian, gay, and transgender communities. Using a qualitative approach, the study conducted semi-structured interviews with four experts, deliberately selected based on specific criteria. Thematic analysis was applied to the interview data, involving transcription, coding, and theme identification from verbatim responses. The findings indicate a significant need to develop the Muslim Personality Model within Hijrah NGOs. The study emphasizes that essential elements such as aqidah, sharia, and akhlaq are integral to this model. The proposed model is designed to assist Hijrah NGOs in nurturing enhanced Muslim identities, which is considered vital. Recommendations include a subsequent phase focused on the design and development of the model, utilizing the Fuzzy Delphi Method (FDM) to achieve consensus among experts regarding the construct and item development. The final phase will involve a usability evaluation with end users from the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM), State Religious Council, and Hijrah NGOs, including Muhajirah Wafiq (MW) (2019), Pertubuhan Insaf Pahang (PIP) (2013), Pertubuhan Islah Movement (PIM) (2016), and Pertubuhan Hijrah RepubliQue Network (PHRN) (2014).

Abstract

Poverty, hunger and unemployment are social scourges ravaging many African countries, Nigeria inclusive. They constitute great obstacles to sustainable development and pose serious threats to security challenges. With her enormous human and material potentials, Nigeria ranks the 23rd poorest country in the world. To tackle the menace of poverty, hunger and unemployment, successive Nigerian governments have initiated series of poverty eradication or poverty-alleviation programmes. But these programmes, due to corruption and inefficient leadership, availed Nigerians nothing, as 61.5% of Nigerians, according to the  National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), are living below $1.25 per day. Against this backdrop, this paper focuses attention on poverty and identifies Zakat, the third pillar of Islam, as a panacea for its alleviation. The paper discovers that lexical repetition, lexical collocation, synonyms, presuppositions and implicature are diverse linguistic features that are woven into the textual fabric of the Glorious Quran to foreground the paramount importance of Zakat as a social security towards poverty reduction.  With a view to promoting national development and security, the paper concludes by advocating for an enabling law establishing a Central Zakat (and Sadaqah) Administrative Board that will be saddled with the responsibilities of collecting Zakat and distributing it to the beneficiaries as stated in Suratu-t-Tawbah,  verse 60 (9:60).

Abstract

This article investigated the corporal punishment through judicial caning in Aceh, Indonesia. The judicial caning is conducted publicly and easily watched by the crowd, including children. This article aimed to search the facts that occurred during the implementation of judicial canning in Aceh. This study employed a qualitative method, with the interview as the main instrument and also used the black-letter law as a supporting approach. The research finding showed that public caning does not guarantee a deterrent effect on the defendants. In some cases, such as gambling and drinking, some of them will potentially repeat the same cases the following years, because the law concerning gambling and drinking does not accommodate rehabilitation mechanism. Furthermore, children attending the canning process will likely imitate the process in their future life. This research has a clear novelty as publication related to judicial caning is still limited in research and articles regarding the Indonesian legal system.
