Abstract These books contain basic Islamic teachings that serve as a guide for students in understanding aqidah, fiqh, and morals. However, challenges arise when students need to understand and convey their knowledge in a broader context, where English language skills become increasingly necessary. Learning the yellow book in Islamic boarding schools is a long-standing tradition, especially among traditional Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia. The yellow book contains classical Islamic religious texts in Arabic that teach various Islamic disciplines, from interpretation, fiqh, hadith, to tasawuf. This tradition has become a main pillar in the formation of the character of students who not only have a deep understanding of Islamic teachings, but also skills in reading, understanding, and interpreting classical religious texts. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study design to explore the experiences of students in the Yellow Book Discussion student organization program at the Darussalam Islamic Boarding School. Data collection was carried out through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation related to the program, such as curriculum and teaching materials. The validity of the findings was guaranteed through triangulation and member checking, while ethical principles were adhered to by obtaining permission from the Islamic boarding school and informed consent from participants. The results of this study indicate that the implementation of the yellow book discussion student organization in English at the Darussalam Islamic Boarding School provides significant benefits in improving students' understanding of classical Arabic books, as well as developing critical and analytical thinking skills. However, several challenges such as limited English language proficiency among students need attention to ensure the overall effectiveness of this program.

This study examines the translation of bilingual online news headlines about Ed Sheeran's concert tour, focusing on the concepts of "loss" and "gain" in the translation process. Through qualitative content analysis, it explores how translators navigate cultural challenges while ensuring the message is clear and relatable for the target audience. The findings reveal that certain details, such as Ed Sheeran’s name and the term "sekaliber," are often omitted, leading to a loss of emphasis and contextual richness. However, translators often introduce new elements, such as personal references, to enhance emotional engagement and relevance. The research highlights that translation is an adaptive process, where adjustments are made to preserve the core message’s impact and resonate with readers. Ultimately, effective translation requires more than a word-for-word conversion; it necessitates a nuanced understanding of both source and target cultures to maintain the essence of the original message despite inevitable shifts in meaning.

This study explores the role of digital tools and language learning strategies in engagement and achievement at the graduate level. This was achieved through a mixed-methods strategy that included a sampling survey with Likert scales as well as in-depth coding of qualitative data. The survey was distributed through the platform and consisted of 15 open-ended questions measuring cognitive, emotional, and behavioral types of engagement on a scale of 1 to 5. The descriptive-analytical methods and qualitative coding were used to measure engagement and student experiences. Emotion engagement was found to be the strongest, while cognitive engagement was high as well but behavioral engagement was relatively lower, indicating participants’ struggle to keep up the consistency in studying. Interactive learning, real-life practice, and even motivational collaboration were used as qualitative analysis reveals while technical difficulties and poor attendance were provided. The results call for some degree of caution in the application of such digital tools that must be incorporated strategically. Future research should find ways to improve behavioral engagement and overcome technological hurdles to improve the overall effectiveness of the digital learning experience.

Listening is one of the essential skills in learning English. A person cannot speak or express their opinions without first listening. This research aims to identify the strategies used by lecturers in teaching listening and how these strategies are implemented. Specifically, this study investigates the application of top-down and bottom-up listening strategies. Top-down listening involves using prior knowledge, context, and background information to understand spoken language, while bottom-up listening focuses on decoding sounds, words, and grammatical structures to derive meaning. Understanding how lecturers incorporate these approaches can provide insights into effective listening instruction. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method using several instruments, including interviews and documentation. The participants in this study were students from the Department of English Language Education program at Darussalam Gontor University. The findings reveal that the lecturer employs an integrated three-stage approach—pre-, while-, and post-listening—while considering student factors. Pre-listening activates prior knowledge and top-down processing, while-listening combines top-down and bottom-up strategies, and post-listening enhances comprehension through interactive activities. Student motivation, interest, and participation play a crucial role in improving listening comprehension. These insights highlight the importance of a structured approach and learner engagement in teaching listening skills effectively

This research investigates the influence of artificial intelligence (AI) on English language instruction in higher education, exploring both its potential benefits and challenges. A mixed-method approach was utilized, integrating survey data with in-depth interviews. The questionnaire was distributed via Google Forms through WhatsApp groups and personal networks to English lecturers. The study involved 16 English lecturers from both public and private universities in East Java. Analyzing the survey responses and interview transcripts revealed that AI technology presents both opportunities and obstacles in English language education. AI has brought significant changes to English instruction at the university level, with lecturers employing various AI tools for tasks such as generating and responding to questions, assessing grammatical accuracy, detecting plagiarism, paraphrasing, and conducting literature reviews. This research also underscores AI’s benefits in language education, particularly in grammar correction and plagiarism detection. However, alongside its advantages, AI also introduces new challenges for the future of English teaching. The effective integration of AI necessitates strong digital literacy skills. As AI technology continues to develop, there is a possibility that certain aspects of English teaching may become automated. Consequently, English lecturers need to continuously refine their digital skills to maintain their relevance in the evolving educational landscape.

The novel Invisible Monster by Chuck Palahniuk reflects the phenomenon of body transformation, such as mutilation, which is considered by society as a deviation from the norm and is called a monstrous body. The discourse is expressed through the character Shannon who carries out facial mutilation; thus, providing space to better understand the phenomenon as an effort to deconstruct established norms. This study aims to investigate the form and factors of monstrous body transformation. To achieve this goal, the researcher used a descriptive qualitative approach by applying two theories, namely Steinhoff's Body Transformation theory and Bakhtin's Grotesque Body theory. This study found a monstrous body form in the form of a crushed face, experienced by Shannon. The crushed face was because Shannon shot herself in the face. Therefore, Shannon's face was destroyed, her jaw was open, her tongue was sticking out, and she continued to bleed and ooze. The crushed face deviated greatly from society's norms of ideal beauty; thus, it was called a monstrous body. Then, this study identified the factors of Shannon's monstrous body transformation, namely abberanormia, which was developed from the Body Transformation theory. Abberanormia was identified from Shannon's condition of wanting to break the norms of beauty not because she was unable to meet them, but because she had reached those standards and felt bored.
