Abstract

The expansion of the Airbnb platform in Indonesia in general and in DKI Jakarta in particular, requires an immediate response from the government in maintaining fair business competition. Using a descriptive approach by exploring social phenomena through library studies, Focus Group Discussions and forecasting, this study successfully identified Airbnb’s potential impact on the accommodation business. Until July 2018, there were 5,494 host listings, of which 254 hosts or 7% had multiple listing. The highest revenue recorded at IDR 14.4 billion per month, with an average increase of 6.25%. Data on Airbnb service users also shows the composition of foreign and domestic guests, which is getting narrow. Forecasting shows that the Entire Home listing type will have the same occupancy rate as star hotels in June 2023 and non-star hotels in November 2023. The potential tax revenue from Airbnb can reach IDR 1.5 billion per month. The inadequate of regulations regarding digital platforms requires the government to immediately make policies to maintain healthy business conditions such as making regulations on the management of digital-based accommodation business, ownership zoning policies, social and environmental surveillance, as well as control of the Airbnb platform and other similar platform.

Abstract

Virginia tobacco is the main raw material of the Indonesia cigarette industry in Indonesia especially for white cigarettes. The increasing import of Virginia tobacco affected, directly or indirectly, the domestic production. The study analyzes the competitiveness of the local Virginia tobacco. The Value Chain Analysis (VCA) is used to analyze the linkages in the value chain. The data used were collected from field studies conducted in Bojonegoro (East Java) and East Lombok (West Nusa Tenggara). The analysis shows that the local Virginia tobacco has not fully supplied the needs of the domestic cigarette industry due to the limited amount of production, low quality, and supply incontinuity. The length in value chain distribution caused lower quality and price incompetitiveness of local tobacco. The policy of land used – intensification should be pursued to increase the productivity, the quality and the continuous supply of local Virginia tobacco to domestic industry.

Abstract

The development of Islamic banking in Indonesia had been very rapid in recent years. However, the market share of Islamic banking was still far below expectations. Previous theoretical studies had stated that the competitive environment between conventional banks and Islamic banks, greatly affected the performance of Islamic banks. In this study, we tried to understand how the influence of conventional bank policies which was described by the savings interest rate (SB) towards the profits of Islamic banks described by Return on Assets (ROA). The analysis method used was Vector Autoregressive (VAR) with additional analysis of Impulse Response Function (IRF) and Variance Decomposition Analysis (VDC). The results of the analysis using VAR stated that there was a significant negative effect on Islamic bank profits (ROA) if there was a shock to conventional bank interest rates (SB). This condition was in line with the results of research by Haron and Ahmad (2000); Haron (2004), and Zainol and Kassim (2012) which suggests that if the interest rate for conventional bank savings increases, Islamic bank customers would switch to conventional banks which were considered to provide greater profits, so that the bank’s profits will increase, so that the profit of Islamic banks had decreased. These results indicated that not all Islamic bank consumers were loyal consumers, Islamic banking was required to act rationally, namely by setting a competitive profit sharing rate against conventional bank interest rates.
