Abstract

A notable gap persists in the educational literature regarding the optimization of 21st century competencies, such as critical thinking, communication, and collaboration, when tailored to students' distinct cognitive styles. This study addresses this lacuna by investigating the efficacy of a novel pedagogical tool, Figma-based Contextual Teaching and Learning Media (Figma-CTLLM), for enhancing these skills, a subject that has not been previously examined. The research aims to optimize critical thinking, communication, and collaboration skills based on reflective and impulsive cognitive styles by implementing Figma-CTLLM in Poaceae diversity learning. The study employs a descriptive quantitative research design with a sample of 26 students. The research instruments included the Matching Familiar Figures Test (MFFT), written tests for critical thinking and communication skills, and observation sheets for collaboration skills. These instruments demonstrated robust validity and reliability. The data analysis technique was carried out descriptively and quantitatively in three stages. The research results showed that eight students had a reflective cognitive style, and eight had an impulsive one. The results of the analysis of each skill show that there is no significant difference in critical thinking, communication, and collaboration skill scores between students with a reflective and impulsive cognitive style. This is proven by the average percentage value for each skill in the same category, which is very high among students with a reflective cognitive style and impulsiveness. This was also confirmed by the Mann- Whitney U test for each skill with a significance value (p) above 0.05 (p>0.05). Based on the results, the implementation of figma-CTLLM can optimize critical thinking, communication, and collaboration skills in students with reflective and impulsive cognitive styles in Poaceae diversity learning.

Abstract

Pedagogical competence is an ability that must be possessed by prospective science teachers because it is needed to improve the learning process. This is related to the teacher's duties which are not only as teachers, but also as educators. This study aims to analyze the pedagogical competence of prospective science teachers in terms of their ability to prepare lesson plans. The method used in this study was through a lesson plan preparation project and using a closed questionnaire via google form to the research subjects, as many as 27 students. The questionnaire contained 14 questions regarding Pedagogical Knowledge (PK), Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK), and Technological Pedagogical Knowledge (TPK). Data from the results of the lesson plan preparation project and questionnaires were analyzed descriptively with percentages. The results of the study showed that: 1) prospective teacher students have been able to prepare lesson plans by integrating pedagogical components. 2) students understand the TPACK components, especially the pedagogical part shown during the simulation activity of the lesson plan being prepared. Based on the results of the data analysis, it is concluded that prospective science teacher students have pedagogical competence whose application is by integrating technology in science learning. This shows that the PjBL model can be used to train the competence of prospective science teachers in applying pedagogical and technological knowledge in learning.

Abstract

Abstract

The grit theory emphasizes that persistence and passion for pursuing long-term goals are more important for success than innate talent alone. The purpose of this research was to assess students' grit levels and examine how they relate to academic performance. The study employed a quantitative correlational design to systematically measure numerical data, which helps identify patterns and relationships among various influencing factors. Participants included 136 students (75 English students and 61 Mathematics students). The research process involved: 1) collecting data via a questionnaire, 2) cleaning the data to remove outliers, 3) analyzing the data with SPSS, and 4) interpreting the results. The instrument used was an 11-item grit scale questionnaire. Data collection involved distributing the questionnaire, asking students to select the response that best reflected their feelings on a Likert scale. Data analysis was conducted in two stages: first, removing outliers; second, analyzing the data with SPSS Version 30. The results showed that the average grit level among the 136 participants was moderate, with a mean score of 40.1%. English majors had an average grit score of 39. 59%, while Mathematics majors averaged 40. 74%. Furthermore, the study found a significant correlation between grit and Academic achievement among all 136 participants (p < 0. 001, r = 0. 317). When examined separately, the correlation was weak among the 75 English students (p = 0. 034, r = 0. 245), whereas among the 61 Mathematics students, it was moderate (p < 0. 001, r = 0. 422). In conclusion, this study confirms that grit is positively associated with GPA, emphasizing its role in academic success.

Abstract

Students' low species literacy and limited awareness of plant diversity highlight the need for contextualised learning media based on local plant resources. This study aims to develop, assess the feasibility, and evaluate the effectiveness of an e-pocket book on Angiospermae diversity in Ghimbo Pomuan Sacred Forest, Kampar, Riau, Indonesia, as an innovative learning tool for higher education. This e-pocket book was developed using the Lee & Owens multimedia development model, which includes the stages of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The feasibility test results showed that this e-pocket book was rated as very valid with an average score of 95.00% from material and media experts, and 95.23% from the practitioner's assessment. The practicality test by students showed an average score of 90.00% in the convenience category. The effectiveness test showed increased species literacy and plant awareness in the experimental class, with N-Gain values of 0.6621 and 0.6403, respectively, in the medium category and higher than those of the control class. These results indicate that the e-pocket book improves species literacy and plant awareness. This media can support biology education that is contextual, relevant, and aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 15.
