Abstract

(Title: Axiological Reflections on Noam Chomsky's and M.A.K Halliday'sLanguage Theories). This article is meant to philosophically reflect Chomsky's and Halliday's language theories by focusing on the axiological dimension of their theoretical constructs, that is, what are the hidden values therein. To draw basic sketches of their theoretical constructs, their ontological and epistemological assumption are explored. Furthermore, Gruenberg's axiological scheme is adopted to discuss them. From the chains of reflection, it is found that in Chomsky's the positive pole of humanlanguage relation exists in language with internal, mental, logical-objective, formal, neutral, innate, certain, transparent, stable, alogarithmic and closed or un-contextual characteristics. The superior language is scientific, positivistic and logical language. Meanwhile, in Halliday's the positive pole exists in language with practical, external, semiotical, social, cultural, participatory, concrete, critical, dynamic, discursive, authentic, interpretative and open or contextual. The superior language is authentic language which is rich of signification.Key words: axiology, language theory, Chomsky, Halliday

(Title: Coffee in a Number of Literary Reviews in Indonesian National Newspapers). This study attempts to (1) map the authors of literary work reviews published in the 2016-2018 national newspaper which raise coffee as their theme, and to (2) describe the readers' responses on the literary works. It is found that there are four reviews which examined some novels namely Ladu, Siti Kewe, Romansa Gayo dan Bordeaux, and a poem collection entitled Secangkir Kopi Sekanak. Reviews of these literary works were published in Republika, Media Indonesia, and Koran Tempo. The current study is a qualitative research using a literary reception approach. Readers' responses which were investigated in this study include literary work reviews. The result of this study is that the authors, who gave responses to the literary works, were literary enthusiasts and served as permanent writers in the aforementioned media (e.g.Nina Ch. in Republika, M-2 in Media Indonesia) or literary enthusiasts and worked as freelance writers (e.g. Chandra A., Ferdian Ananda Majni). Reviews in the newspaper were considered popular and oriented to providing information on newly-released books. This study also revealed that the readers' responses discuss coffee in relation to Gayo and Aceh, environmental issues, history, inner conflicts of the search for God, and the nature of coffee as a complement for solving life problems. Keywords: coffee, literary reviews, reception theory

Abstract

(Title: The Humor of the Belantik Society in the Novel "Orang Biasa" by Andrea Hirata). Andrea Hirata consistently tells stories about the values of local wisdom and current social issues in simple language. One of the languages used in his novel is humor. This study aims to describe the form of humor and to examine the sociocultural factors of the Belantik people in Andrea Hirata's novel (Ordinary People). The data were obtained by using baca-catat (reading and notetaking) technique. Data were analyzed qualitatively based on Berger's humor theory, especially categories and techniques of humor. The findings of this study show that there are two categories of humor in interpersonal relationship, such as language and logic. The techniques of language consist of satire, literalness, and insult; while the techniques of logic consist of absurdity, analogy, dan repetition. Generally, the humor contained in this novel occurs as a result of close interpersonal relationships, such as the illogical way of thinking of a character, the way a character speaks to another character, and the way in which social criticism is delivered through the humor. Keywords: humor, satire, social criticism, absurdity

Abstract

(Title: Indonesian Identity in Drama's Nyanyi Sunyi Revolusi by Amir Hamzah). This paper will examine the beginning period of Indonesia which is represented in the drama. The past events which occurred more than seventy years ago are now retold, not only to re-establish who Amir Hamzah was, but also to explain the Indonesian identity and the roles he played in building a nationality. Amir Hamzah, one of the great authors of Indonesia who also contributed in formulating the archipelago as Indonesia, who advocated Malay language as the language of unity of Indonesia, should be killed by several young men because he was a sultan's nephew. Those young men considered the Sultans and their families as Dutch henchmen. The tragic story of Amir Hamzah's life was staged in a drama titled "Nyanyi Sunyi Revolusi" (trans. The Quiet Singing of Revolution)which with the scripts was written by Ahda Imran. Socio-political conditions give rise to the need to define "˜self'. This requires serious rethinking. This drama also illustrates the identity of Indonesia after independence. In other words, literature describes history from a different view. By using the principle of New Historicism, this paper will explain the complex problem that occurred in Indonesia after independence until the 50s. Besides, it also will describe "Indonesian Identity" in the drama "Nyanyi Sunyi Revolusi". In this context, Indonesian literary texts which reflect Indonesian history can be positioned as historical reading from a different version. Keywords: identity, Indonesian, revolution, new historicism.
