Abstract (Title: Family and State: Space of Self-Negotiation in "Qui A Tué Mon Père" Novel's by í‰douard Louis). Literary work reflects a culture outside its world. A family cannot be separated from society and country in which it is belonged to. Individuals in a family cannot be disconnected from their genetics. This qualitative descriptive study using Bourdieu's theoretical reference aims to describe the habitus, symbolic violence, and the arena of power in the novel "Qui a tué mon père" or "Who Killed My Father" by í‰douard Louis. The results showed that the habitus manifested through the main character "Je" or "I" was obtained through an individual historical process as someone who was born in a poor and a working family that is structurally dominated by society and state. In conclusion, the main character who experienced symbolic violence not only from his family (father and mother) but also from his social environment (neighbor, school, and government) try to negotiate his identity through this novel.   Keywords: habitus, symbolic violence, arena of power, dialectical, structural-constructivist

Folklore is one of the intellectual works that was born as an expression of the world view of the supporting community. One of the folklore motifs found in a number of ethnic groups in Indonesia is that which tells about the marriage between earth men and angels from heaven. Among these folklore are Jaka Tarub (Java), Putri Surga (Papua), Cerita Air Tukang (Maluku), Betawol (Miraculous North Kalimantan), Malim Deman and Puti Bungsu (Riau), Tomanurun (Toraja), and Si Lanang and Punai (South Kalimantan). This study tries to compare and understand the motif of marriage between men of the earth and deities by using the perspective of feminism. The results showed that the deities had higher positions and abilities than men of the earth who married him. This means that the upper world (heaven or heaven) the place of origin of the deities in social stratification is considered higher than the underworld, even though the two complement each other. The existence of the motif of marriage between men of the earth and desities found in a number of ethnic groups in Indonesia shows a high appreciation for the figure of the mother as an ancestor who inherited certain ethnicities, which is a manifestation of the spirit of feminism in a number of folklores in Indonesia. Keywords: deities, world above, world below, feminism

Abstract

(Title: Just Like Black, Only Better: Poor White in Antebellum South of America Depicted in Solomon Northup's Novel "Twelve Years as A Slave"). Antebellum era, the period before the Civil War occured, or before the year 1861, in the United States is used to relate to the enslavement of black American. In fact, the era was not merely about black, but also poor white. This study is purposed to describe the poor whites' life in antebellum America as reflected in Twelve Years As A Slave (1855), a narrative biography novel written by Solomon Northup. Set up the story in New York, Washingotn DC, and New Orleans, the author (and focalizer at once) told the story based on his own experience as a black who was captivated and sold into slavery for twelve years. Although the novel centered its story on black character, it also reflected the life of poor whites who were also being "enslaved" by their white counterparts. Through sociology of literature perspective, this study reveals that the character of poor white that represented through John M. Tibeats, Armsby, and James H. Burch came from Great Britain especially from Ireland. Mostly, they moved to America as incarcerated people. They lived under the poverty and some of them were the vagrants and petty criminals. Poor white during antebellum era in America was positioned in the lower social level. They were "enslaved" by their white master but more better compared to the black slaves. It can be noticed that poor white were positioned in low social level because of the socio-economic problem, while blacks were race and racism.
