Abstract

Reading English text is often regarded as a difficult task by English for Specific Purposes (ESP) students during their individual reading time. Therefore, this research investigates the impact of a small group discussion on ESP students' online text reading performance and strategies. The quantitative research, employing a pre-experimental design, purposively recruited 90 students from the Computer Science and Engineering Faculty. The data were collected through pre- and post-assessments on reading comprehension and a survey on reading strategies. Analyzed using SPSS 27.0, the data of the research show that the small group discussion highly affects reading performance of ESP students. Besides, their reported reading strategy use demonstrates a high frequency of use in all three strategy categories (PROB, GLOB, SUP), with no significant difference found in all categories by age and major. In conclusion, the implementation of a small group discussion in the ESP classroom can effectively improve the online text reading performance and develop reading strategies of the students. It also positively implies that educators can employ a small group discussion to promote other reading aspects in various educational settings.

Abstract

The interplay of gender, ethnicity, and religious identifications plays an important role in the daily lives of Indonesians (Bertrand, 2004; Hoon, 2013; Ikasari, 2009; 2020; Suryadinata, et al., 2003).This study looks at Indonesian young girls' ways of being ethnic and religious, in relation to their schooling experiences to determine the manner in which these schoolgirls construct their ethnic and religious identities in the school environment. It is expected to add on to previous and current studies of women/girls in the Indonesian context. Located in a public secondary co-educational school in Yogyakarta, the study involved three schoolgirls from the Chinese ethnicity and Christian religion. Drawing on cultural studies and feminism of identity and difference as the theoretical and methodological framework, the study attempted to explore Indonesian schoolgirls' experiences and constructions of ethnicity and religion. This research is a qualitative descriptive study using case study as its method. The research data were collected from free-format, short autobiography essays written by the participants, individual and group interviews, and observation as well as online communications. Data analyses were initially carried out through data coding as determined by the research questions. The findings show that, first, the three ethnic-religious groups in this study namely the Chinese-Kristiani girls set up binaries of their essentialised understandings of being ethnic and religious members. Second, there are different ways of learning shaped by their ethnicity and religion. These two identities, in turn, shape their learning outcomes within and beyond their schooling site.

Abstract

This article explores verbal violence against women on TikTok to uncover the underlying factors contributing to the verbal violence. Using a qualitative approach, we examine verbal violence on the @bacotinajagpp TikTok account from March 2022 to December 2023. The analysis is grounded in feminist theory in Linguistics, which examines how language perpetuates gender-based oppression and reinforces patriarchal norms. Methodologically, the study utilizes a qualitative content analysis of TikTok posts to identify patterns in language use and strategies of verbal violence. The findings show that verbal violence represented in the language used in the account can be categorized into four types (sexual, appearance-related, intellectual, and character-based), manifested in five language variations (hate speech, abusive language, offensive language, aggressive language, and harassing language) and articulated through four strategies (general statements, personal attacks, intimidation, and manipulation). These patterns underscore the use of verbal violence to reinforce men's social dominance by threatening, insulting, and demeaning women, thereby perpetuating negative stereotypes. This article aims to raise awareness of these issues to reduce verbal violence on social media and mitigate negative stereotypes about women. By doing so, the study seeks to cultivate a more respectful online environment and diminish misogynistic attitudes.

Abstract

The Bahasa Indonesia bagi Penutur Asing (BIPA) course plays an essential role in the cultural adaptation at Indonesian universities. However, the precise impact on student cultural integration and academic success has received little attention. This study investigates the impact of BIPA on cultural adaptation of international students, focusing on diverse cultural backgrounds. A mixed methods approach was used, with 123 international students questioned using a Google form survey, and 12 conducting in-depth phone calls to gather the required data. The results show that BIPA significantly improves language proficiency and cultural understanding. Language barriers emerge as the primary challenges to adaptation, emphasising the importance of language acquisition. Tailored support mechanisms within Indonesian universities are deemed essential to meet the diverse needs of international students. The recommendations include optimising BIPA programs and creating supportive environments for students.

Abstract

Having students think critically is essential to their achieving a successful life, and thus, to develop the society they live in. Reading and critical thinking skills, are essential to acquiring knowledge, especially with foreign languages. This study aims to explore the relationship between reading comprehension and critical thinking among EFL learners. Forty EFL learners were given two tests: a reading comprehension test and the Arabic version of the Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal (1980). The survey's statistical results indicate a significant and positive correlation between reading comprehension and critical thinking, particularly in inference and interpretation skills. However, three critical thinking skills (argument, assumption and deduction) seemed to be insignificant compared to the participants' reading comprehension scores. The findings, therefore, suggest some pedagogical implications. The most important implication is integrating critical thinking skills in second language skills, like reading. EFL teachers can give learners some tasks to think of reading passages related to their life, and practices can be designed based on critical thinking skills. Teachers can implement guided reading sessions that concentrate mainly on interpreting texts and drawing inferences by using tasks such as real-world scenarios and problem-solving.

Abstract

This article explores the philosophical concepts of existentialism and absurdism, focusing on the works of Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus. It begins by examining Sartre's notion of "for-itself" and "in-itself," highlighting the inherent discomfort and isolation of human existence, which resonates with Martin Heidegger's idea of "Dasein." The study delves into the fundamental aims of absurdism, which seeks to reconcile the contradictions between human will and a hostile environment. By analyzing Sartre's play "No Exit," the article illustrates how absurdist theatre employs non-linear narratives to evoke feelings of disorientation and absurdity, ultimately reflecting on the quest for meaning in a seemingly meaningless world. The study also critiques the absence of Grice's Cooperative Principle, particularly the Maxim of Quantity, in the dialogues of "No Exit," emphasizing the complexities of communication in existential contexts. The findings underscore the interplay between existential themes and absurdist techniques, offering insights into the human condition and the perpetual struggle for purpose amidst existential despair. This article is relevant for readers interested in philosophy, theatre, and the exploration of human existence.

Abstract

Education is starting to move from the conventional to the digital world. One form of this change is the presence of Digital Humanities in the world of education. Digital humanities can provide many benefits, especially in English teaching and learning. This study aims to investigate teachers' and students' perceptions towards digital humanities in the EFL classes. This study was conducted with 103 teachers and students from various schools and universities in Indonesia. In a quantitative phase, a survey questionnaire was distributed to collect the data. The 63 question items are divided into 6 parts: demographics, experiential learning, multimodal communication, digital ethics & critical inquiry, collaborative learning, and AI for language teaching and learning. Moreover, a semi-structured interview was obtained to get details about digital tools and technologies implementation in the EFL teaching and learning. The study revealed that the use of digital humanities effectively enhance EFL teaching and learning. Digital humanities offer a dynamic learning environment for English language learners, providing access to a wealth of resources and tools while streamlining administrative processes for teachers. These findings are align with the intended purpose of digital humanities in classroom, which is to enhance efficiency and accessibility in information retrieval.

Abstract

A couple of widely-observed and much-discussed related notions within news journalism are "˜objectivity' and "˜journalistic voice'. They have been the focus of several linguistic and discourse analysis studies on English and across various languages and cultures. However, to date, they have not been thoroughly explored in Arabic news journalism. Therefore, this study attempts to close this gap by linguistically examining Arabic hard news reporting in relation to the key register features associated with these twin aspects. In particular, it is concerned with investigating patterns in the use of attitudinal language and attribution in such a journalistic tradition. To achieve this aim, it put together a corpus of thirty Arabic hard news reports collected from two prominent media organizations in the Middle Eastern region: Aljazeera and Alarabiya. It also drew on the insights offered by the Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL)-based news journalism scholarship: specifically, the literature outlined in the Appraisal theory. The analysis carried out indicate that some Arabic hard news reports bear a similarity to English ones with respect to use of attitudinal meanings and modes of attribution. They operate in reporter voice, containing instances of inscribed authorial Appreciation and neutral and non-neutral reporting verbs.

Abstract

Studies on the use of humorous videos in educational settings especially on informatics engineering study program is still less explored. This study focuses on investigating the effects of humorous videos and students' perceptions of this intervention in the EFL classroom. Fifty participants are from the informatics engineering study program. This study used a one-group pretest-post-test design to collect quantitative data, with the same independent variable measured in a group of participants before and after treatment. This study found that, first, humorous video has no significant effect in statistics to increase enjoyment, engagement, and reduce anxiety in informatics study program students. Other findings found that, second, students have positive perception towards the use of humorous videos in English lesson. They share a lot of benefits of using humorous videos in English lesson such as in promoting enjoyable and relax learning environment, reducing anxiety, build confidence, influence new perspective on making errors, and so on.

Abstract

Alinesitoué Diatta is a prophetess within the Awasena religion, an indigenous religion from Casamance, Senegal. However, nowadays, her prophetic identity is less known than her image as a national hero, specifically as a Senegalese freedom fighter. This article examines the representation of Alinesitoué Diatta through the character Johanna Simentho in Boubacar Boris Diop's novel Les Tambours de la Mémoire (1987). It aims to explore whether the novel revives the prophetic narrative of Alinesitoué Diatta or merely continues her political image constructed by the Senegalese government. Moreover, this article analyzes the relation between the character's representation and the narrative contestation about her that occurred in Senegal during 1980s. This research uses Mikhaí¯l Bakhtin's polyphony theory, Stephen Greenblatt's new historicism, and Max Weber's prophetic theory to examine these topics. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, we collected primary data consisting of novel quotations about the character Johanna Simentho and compared them with Alinesitoué Diatta's historical narrative. This research found that the use of polyphonic narratives in the novel represents the narrative contestation over Alinesitoué Diatta by the Senegalese government, FCS, and Kabrousse villagers. Furthermore, the article also found that the novel has revived Alinesitoué Diatta's prophetic narrative even though this prophetic representation intertwines with a masculine narrative depicting her as "Yo jigeen ci mun goor" or "a woman who is stronger than men".
