Abstract

An inability to recognize discourse structure is seen by applied linguists as one of the main problems of non-native speaker students in understanding science lectures in English. In this circumstance, the use of interactive discourse structure like questions is salient as it is likely to aid comprehension. This research investigated the use of questions in science lectures in English in a university in Malaysia. By using conversation analysis (CA), a science lecturer was selected, video-recorded, and interviewed during two formal teaching hours. The findings show that the lecturer used a large quantity of display and referential questions. Display questions, comprising questions with ‘do’, ‘have’ and to be ‘is’ and ‘are,’ were posed to encourage participation and check students’ understanding toward the materials at hand. Meanwhile, referential questions, mostly started with ‘what’ or ‘what do you think’, ‘how’, ‘when’ and ‘where’, were employed to guide the students to understand science concept and stimulate critical thinking skills. This research, thus, suggested science lecturers to use questions in various types and ways to foster learning. Keywords: questions, types, functions, science lecture APAKAH HUKUM INERSIA NEWTON?:PENGGUNAAN PERTANYAAN DALAM PERKULIAHAN SAINS AbstrakKetidakmampuan dalam mengenali struktur wacana dilihat oleh ahli linguistik terapan sebagai salah satu masalah utama mahasiswa bukan penutur asli dalam memahami perkuliahan sains dalam bahasa Inggris. Sementara itu, pertanyaan referensial, dimulai dengan ‘what’ atau ‘what do you think’, ‘how’, ‘when’ dan ‘where’, digunakan untuk memandu mahasiswa memahami konsep sains dan merangsang keterampilan berpikir kritis.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

English translation of the Holy Qur’an comes as solutions for Muslims and non-Muslims worldwide to be able to understand the message of the Holy Qur’an besides its authentic Arabic text. Two of the most famous versions are translated by Saheeh International SI (2004) and Abdel Haleem hereafter AH (2004). Since Arabic and English belong to different language families, the translations resulted in the variation of lexicons and grammatical structures to express the same meaning in English from the Holy Qur’an. This research attempts to reveal how lexical and grammatical differences happened in two different English translation versions of surah al-Fatihah by SI and AH. The data were analyzed using a contrastive analysis method with content analysis. The results showed that firstly, there are lexical and grammatical differences in the five ayats. Secondly, SI used procedures that are mostly oriented to the SLT such as transcription and componential analysis while AH used procedures that are mostly oriented to the TLT such as modulation and contraction. Lastly, the two translators applied different dominant ideologies on their translations. SI represents the foreignization ideology while AH represents domestication ideology.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate two movies, Spider Man and Hulk, in terms of: (1) the mutant characters, (2) the background and effects experienced by the main characters, (3) the educational values, and (4) the hidden ideologies. The data sources were the two movies. The data were collected through intensive reading. The results show that the characters, Spider Man and Hulk, are heroes according to children. A mutant is defined as a genetic change concept. Peter, the main character in Spider Man, had a DNA change while Bruce in Hulk had an RNA change. The mutant theory is thought of as thinking development by evolution thinkers (Darwinians). It says that an evolution is something inevitable to achieve a better condition and happens randomly. The strong living things (including human beings) will survive through the natural selection, but the weak ones will perish.
