Abstract

The emergence of human rights issues related to women has developed considerable debates in various academic approaches. For some Muslim scholars, human rights of women are linked to the perspective of interpretation of the Qur’ānic verses, which are still considered misogyny (view of ignoring women.) The focus of this study is to examine how the contemporary interpretation of the Qur’ān on women’s rights issues. The method used is a critical-analytical method. The results of this study show that there is still interpretation of the Qur’ān about women’s rights issues that are misogyny. Women are positioned based on their gender, not on their capacities and competencies. Whereas the Qur’ān obviously contains clues about the necessity to put every person, including women, in the nature of humanity as khalīfa fī al-ard, who have opportunity and equal access with men on the roles are undertaken.

Abstract

Religion is not merely value-resources which influence its adherents’ ideas and attitudes, but it respectively functions as an inspiration and transformation of cultural and political values that have been inherited by subsequent generations as well. This writing scrutinizes the root of Islamic social thoughts from the classical era, when the texts of the Holy Book have become ‘public constitution,’ in which the texts have been interpreted by countless theological school of thoughts in the form of ‘reaction-action’ towards arbitrage (tahkīm) involving in between ‘Alī b. Abū Tālib and Mu‘āwiya. This ‘reaction-action’ previously dealt with an issue of whether a person is a Muslim or kāfir, and later on, rose to reach the political questions—and it unconsciously has experienced the incubation epochs of social basis of Islamic thought until recent days. The emergence of hard-liner groups like Usamah bin Ladin, who fought on behalf of Islam, can be traced in this modern period from the immeasurable theological streams residing in the past phase.

Abstract

As as muslim, it is important to clear up the view of the Godness in Islam which is often misunderstood by some people. Its urgency not only as an enlightment for nonmuslim on Islam, moreover to some of muslim community today. One of those is the accusation which the conception of God in Islam is arbitrarily, cruel, desire to worshipped, requires to defensed brutally, etc. Fazlur Rahman has tried to answer this accusation using Synthetic-Logical Hermenenutics by describing three important conceptions about God in al-Qur’an, namely: the dependency of everything to God, the mercy of God, and the necessary relation between God and human. However, Fazlur Rahman elaborated Moral-Ethical aspect only, minus ontological aspect which is precisely important to answer the accusation above. This minus can be very well covered by `Allamah al-Ṭabāṭabā’ī’s Tafsīr. By the synthesis of both, the accusation is not only indisputable, but will provide a profound explanation on Godness in Islam. So, then it will appear that the conception of God in Islam not only has a dimension of theological-ethic but firmly philosophical-theoritic.

Abstract

As a religion, Islam provides values, ethics, norms and guidelines, but not a quick panacea, for Islam and democracy in Indonesia. So it is very important for Islamic scholars, leaders and Muslim intelligentsia to make their people be aware and conscious that the fundamentalism, radicalism and violence are the wrong answer at the wrong time to address the problems. Fundamentalism and radicalism with violent face are not the answer to tackle the poverty, social crisis, environmental crisis, global inequities and various multi-dimensional problems in recent years. Islam will be come in handy, useful and meaningful if it can make a real contribution as values, ethics, morals, ideas, thoughts, solutions and philosophy for the communities in addressing the real issues, so that Islam would be menaningful and useful in overcoming radicalism and fundamnetalism. Will Indonesian Islam be capable and credible in dealing with this challenge? It depends on its leader and ‘ulamā’s.

Abstract

This paper seeks to examine the metaphysical views of Ikhwān al-Ṣafā. The metaphysical view that developed in the 10th century AD is a unique view that places nature more fully as a spiritual and material entity simultaneously. After several centuries, modern science, especially through modern cosmology has abandoned the spiritual-metaphysical aspects of the universe, and only recognizes nature as a material-physical entity. It was for centuries that metaphysics was rejected as the epistemological basis of science. Yet in the view of Ikhwān al-Ṣafā sublunar material things are nothing but entities born from metaphysical entities. The metaphysics of Ikhwān al-Ṣafā, will show the boundary between macro-spiritual things called superlunar and physical micro-entities called sublunar.

Abstract

This paper is a translation and commentary on the first chapter of Book V of the Metaphysics of Avicenna’s (d. 1037) major philosophical work, the Shifāʾ. In this particular section of this work and the rest of the chapters of Book V, Avicenna lays out the metaphysical foundations to his realist epistemology. One central doctrine that he develops in the first chapter is the idea that a thing’s essence is distinct from its existence. By existence, Avicenna includes concrete existence in the outside realm and also conceptual existence in the mind (i.e. the way things are said or structured in concepts.) A thing’s essence has a neutral ontological position, neither primarily outside nor primarily conceptual, though it can exist as a concrete thing and/or as a concept. The fact that the mind and the concrete world may share a common object is the basis of Avicennian realist epistemology: this is how our thoughts and impressions about the world actually correspond to the world.

Abstract

Theologically and historically, Islam can not be separated from other religions. However, the shape and style off the relationship in between them have taken place according to certain context and specific historical trajectory. Occasionally, this relationship was polemical, but more frequently it occurred in more dialogical nuance. Nevertheless, the principle of the relationship between Islam and other religions is similar, in the line of Qur'ānic teachings and as exemplified by the Prophet Muhammad in his life times, i.e. to affirm and respect other religions’ existence, and to bestow freedom that their followers could practice their faith respectively. This is as articulated by Dale F. Eickelman, a contemporary Islamicist, "The Qur'ān offers a distinctly modern perspective on the role of Islam as a force for tolerance and mutual recognition in a multiethnic, multicommunity world." This article proves that the Qur'ān accepts differences and diversities existing in human society; it even receives more specific views concerning to the plurality of believe and religious laws.

Abstract

Radicalism and extremism conducted at recent time by young people have reduced a quality of democratic life in Indonesia. In fact, democracy requires similar human-right and freedom from threat and coercion, moreover in religious freedom. The involvement of young people in extremist conduct can be seen further from text-books of Pendidikan Agama Islam/PAI (Education of Islamic Religion/EIR) which is used in senior high school. The goal of this research is to describe definitions of toleration, harmony, and discrimination that are explained in EIR books, and is to explore theological bases used by the books, and how those topics are interpreted. This writing uses qualitative method by an approach of content-analysis towards the books. The definition of toleration, harmony and discrimination used in those books just emphasizes the relations of inter-religions and inter-cultures. No explicit explanation deals with the importance to build toleration and harmony of intra-religion which recently gains huge attention in Indonesians for this oftenly makes conflict. The Qur’ānic verses becoming theological basis are quoted and interpreted textually. Meanwhile, stories of conduct and model are focused on classical era, in which there is no story, conduct, model or example from cases taken from Indonesian contexts.

Abstract

This article explains a thought of a philosopher, Walter Benjamin. His thought relates to the function of art that today changes i.e. just for fulfilling the political interests. The decreasing art, as mentioned, is particularly photography and film. As far as Benjamin is concerned, the photography and film that emerge as ‘art of politic’ are caused by Germany fascism, which has exploited those photography and film as its political vehicle. On the other hand, it is true that fascism succeeded to carry aesthetic into political stage. However, since fascism has authorized harshness and violence, as the result, such ‘political aesthetic’ is used for war.
