STUDIA ISLAMIKA (ISSN 0215-0492; E-ISSN: 2355-6145) is a journal published by the Center for the Study of Islam and Society (PPIM) UIN Syarif Hidayatullah, Jakarta. It specializes in Indonesian Islamic studies in particular, and Southeast Asian Islamic studies in general, and is intended to communicate original researches and current issues on the subject. This journal warmly welcomes contributions from scholars of related disciplines. STUDIA ISLAMIKA, published three times a year since 1994, is a bilingual journal (English and Arabic) that aims to provide readers with a better understanding of Indonesia and Southeast Asia’s Muslim history and present developments through the publication of articles, research reports, and book reviews from Indonesian and international scholars alike. STUDIA ISLAMIKA has been accredited by The Ministry of Education and Culture, Republic of Indonesia as an academic journal (SK Dirjen Dikti No. 56/DIKTI/Kep/2012).

Abstract

This article suggests the political dynamics that occur at the time of the conference the Partai Persatuan Pembangunan (PPP), which was held on 29 August to 2 September 1994.Many opinions that say that the congress of the United Development Party (PPP) that has its own strategic significance because the results will determine the 1997 election and then General Session, 1998. At this General Assembly will take place according to many in the national succession, including the change of state leaders, the president Republic of Indonesia. Abstract

Indonesian government plays an important role in developing religious education. Since the 1970s, the government has promoted basic education for the Indonesian citizen, modernizing primary and secondary education and including religious subjects in the national curriculum. Furthermore, from the early beginning of the New Order era, Islamic educational institutions such as pesantren and madrasah—which are mostly founded by private or informal institutions— must also follow the national curriculum and comply with state regulations. On the one hand, pesantren is continuously recognized as an autonomous institution, and honored as a community-based educational institution. Madrasah, on the other hand, is supported to teach Islam and religious subjects, but at the same time it is required to introduce sciences and general subjects to its students.During the 1980s and 1990s, major changes in the curriculum of Islamic religious education in Indonesia have turned madrasah into education institutions increasingly integrated in Indonesia’s national education. In fact, the share of general studies reached 70%, while religious studies have been reduced to only about 30% of madrasah curriculum. As a consequence, all madrasah graduates have equivalent degree recognized by other schools in general, enabling them to pursue undergraduate studies in public universities.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v25i1.7284

Abstract

This article discusses Bundo Kanduang folklore from a religious perspective. Folklore is a literary work that describes the life story of a figure or tells about the origin of a region which is intended to provide guidance for community. In some cases, it also becomes a medium to disseminate religious teachings or moral tenets. Despite these primary goals, folklore also aims to entertain the community through stories. This article ultimately attempts to understand the community's belief to Bundo Kanduang folklore from the Islamic orthodoxy point of view. Conservative Muslims tend to consider people's excessive belief to one figure or to treat him/her as a cult is a heresy (bid'ah) which contradicts Islamic teaching.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v18i1.443

Abstract

In this book, the main focus of discussion is the changes and development in Mulims' way of thinking about their identity. Islam is placed in an important position, with an historio-cultural basis, which is then presented as a strength in the formation of nationalism. The term bilad al-jawah appears as a form of community identity. Bilad al-jawah, also called "the land below wind", was a geographical parameter that referred to the Muslim Archipelago as a community with a strong level of thought, exchange and cultural communication (ecumene).DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v11i1.656

Abstract

This article covers the efforts being made by two regions of Indonesia to implement Islamic law, that is, Aceh and West Sumatra. As one of the Special Autonomous Regions in Indonesia, Aceh has far greater freedom and authority to make its own rules and regulations, which includes the use of Islamic law as the rule of law in the area. In order to achieve this objective, the government of Aceh has introduced a regulation regarding the implementation of Islamic law and is quite extensive in that it covers aqidah (Islamic beliefs), ibadah (matters of worship), muamalah (dealings between people), akhlak (character), pendidikan (education), dakwah, baitul mal (the treasury), kemasyarakatan (social matters), syiar Islam (Islamic propogation), pembelaan Islam (defending Islam), peradilan (judicature), jinayat, munakahat (marriage) and waris (inheritance). Abstract

GUPPI (Gabungan Usaha Pembaruan Pendidikan Islam) dapat diletakkan sebagai sejarah pembaruan pendidikan Islam di Indonesia. GUPPI merupakan satu-satunya organisasi yang secara eksplisit bertujuan melakukan pembaruan pendidikan Islam. Namun, dilihat dari sisi tokoh pendirinya yang terdiri dari para pemimpin pesantren di daerah Jawa Barat, dapat diduga bahwa GUPPI merupakan salah satu bentuk representasi kekhawatiran kalangan tradisional terhadap semakin kuatnyapengaruh kaum modernis, terutama dalam bidang pendidikan. Pergumulan antara pendidikan dan politik membuat organisasi ini kehilangan wataknya sebagai pembaru pendidikan Islam. Abstract

This article is a review of the book "Democracy and Diffusion: Transnational Lesson Drawing among Indonesian Pro-Democracy Actors" by Uhlin unders (87 Lund Political Studies, Department of Political Science, Lund University, 1995).Anders Uhlin publication of a book which was originally a dissertation at the University of Lund, Sweden, is motivated by the noisy atmosphere of a critique of theories of political regime transitions. Uhlin himself considered that the transition theories suffer from a bias towards the view as if democracy is only relevant in any political environment, and because it always implies the need for democratization of the regime transformation. Broader issues concerning democratization of civil-society, which often does not imply a transition regime, tend to be ignored by the theories of transition. Abstract

Al-Irshād is an organization formed by the Arabs in present-day Indonesia in 1914, which advocates Islamic reform. This article examines its educational activities in the Dutch colonial period, elucidating the thoughts of its founder and leader, Aḥmad Sūrkatī, and the process of the integration of Arabs into the host society. Sūrkatī’s thought is distinguished from other Arab reformists for its emphasis on “egalitarianism” and its lack of a tendency towards Arab nationalism. From early on, he attempted to adapt the al-Irshād schools to the colonial education system in order to attract indigenous (pribumi) students, as well. In the late 1920s, he began to be locally oriented, with a focus territorially limited to Indonesia. The educational activities of al-Irshād in the 1930s also indicated the weakning of Ḥaḍramī/Arab-orientation. By the late 1930s, the opinion of al-Irshād was decisively inclined toward integration within the host society.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v23i3.3268

Abstract

Although the influence of Sundanese interpretations of Islam is not clearly evident in Indonesia’s Islamic networks, these local interpretations have played a crucial role in the indigenization of Islam in the region. This article analyses Haji Hasan Mustapa’s dangding manuscript on Sundanese expressions of Sufism in the 19th century. Mustapa’s teachings on Sundanese dangding sufism suggests efforts to harmonize waḥdat al-wujūd teachings with Sundanese tradition. Mustapa’s work harmoniously integrates mystical Islam teachings and practices with Sundanese traditions. For example, the flora and fauna imagery and metaphors associated with Sundanese culture often adorns his metrical verses (dangding). Tadpoles, angklung and various kinds of bamboo such as awi, haur and iwung are also used in the context of his mystical and spiritual quest in waḥdat al-wujūd.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v20i2.390

Abstract

The production of Islamic manuscripts in the Archipelago increased from the 16th century through to the 18th century, particularly when Aceh became the centre of Islamic intellectual activities. A number of well-known 'ulama' came from this region, including Hamzah Fansuri, Shamsuddin al-Sumatrani, Nuruddin al-Raniri and Abdurrauf Singkel, who were extraordinarily productive in writing manuscripts, both for teaching and learning, and for other purposes. This manuscript writing tradition in Aceh then spread to a number of other areas in the Archipelago, such as Sulawesi, Java, and others. As a result, many Iocal manuscripts cat be found in these areas, which store knowledge specifically related to that area.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v11i2.621
