Abstract

The slametan ceremony commonly practiced by the abangan Javanese not only occurs within the Javanese community in Java, but also within the Chinese or Tionghoa community practicing religions other than Islam in Java. The slametan ceremony held to rebuild the Sam Poo Kong cave at the Sam Poo Kong temple in Semarang in 2002 was not just a sacred ritual, but also served as a platform to bring together and unite two different ethnic groups to establish order in society. The approach used in this paper refers to Clifford Geertz’s perspective, which views slametan as an effort or ceremony performed to ward off someone or a group of people from the disturbance of spirits. Additionally, Marcel Mauss’s theory of gift exchange or reciprocity is also employed. According to Mauss’s theory of exchange, no human action is without reciprocity, as all actions expect some form of return, including offerings made to spirits and deities.

Abstract

The role of women is still often marginalized to this day. This occurs due to interpretations of texts, both religious and otherwise, that are gender biased. Mainstream masculinity has hegemonized consciousness, even among women themselves. It is not surprising that among women, some are submerged while perpetuating the hegemony of masculinity, alienating themselves from historical centers. Yet history also shows that significant roles of women are recorded amidst the hegemony of men. At the very least, the endeavors of women during the time of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) demonstrate that women have a historically significant domain no less important than that of men.

Abstract

This writing seeks to reconstruct the concept of theology of the land (agrarian theology). It is a perspective that the issue of unequal access to agrarian resources is not only a socio-economic issue but also related to religious issues, especially the interpretation of a doctrine by key religious figures. In other words, the inequality of access to agrarian resources becomes more entrenched due to the legitimacy that claims the ‘good’ values of religion presented by these religious leaders. Therefore, Agrarian Theology aspires to become an instrument to break the stagnation that has long been dominated by both the ‘religious rulers’ and the excessive rulers of agrarian resources, resulting in endless poverty. Thus, the ‘stagnation’—if this term may be used—of the agrarian movement that has mostly operated at the socio-economic-political level can become more solid and have new ammunition. In this context, agrarian struggles are not only a social issue but also a struggle to uphold religious values.

Abstract

This article is based on the ambiguous understanding of the terms destiny and sunatullah in the context of natural disasters. Where natural disasters are something that is commonplace for every human being. Because, every human being must have experienced, seen, or heard news about natural disasters. However, people's responses have always been different, at least in three views. First, they assume that natural disasters are merely natural occurrences. Second, they assume that natural disasters are the result of human behavior. Third, they think it is part of God's destiny and will. In relation to these three views, further criticism is needed so that there is no confusion of understanding. The question of natural disasters is destiny or sunnatullah? Some of these views certainly have consequences. This is the issue that will be discussed in this article. This research model is a qualitative research based on literature study. Meanwhile, the verses will be discussed using the thematic interpretation method.

Abstract

The main issue of this writing is the methodology for religious research, meaning this study is a methodological research. Methodological studies fall within the realm of the philosophy of science. In the context of scientific research, there are several key terms that are interrelated and have similarities, namely methodology, method, and theory. Therefore, in the context of this research, it is necessary to first explain the differences in meaning and the relationship between methodology, method, and theory.

Abstract

This text is an effort to make Ilmu Kalam (Islamic theology) an applied science. Now is the right time to revive the study of Ilmu Kalam by reorienting its methods and core topics towards more practical applications, so that this discipline once again becomes a rich, intelligent, and inspiring intellectual heritage of Islam for solving the problems of humanity. This reorientation effort is not at all intended to dismantle a scientific structure that is already so solid; rather, it is meant to enrich the great and brilliant discipline of Ilmu Kalam. However, this greatness and brilliance will be in vain if not accompanied by efforts to revitalize it in accordance with its current significance.

Abstract

Abstract

Hassan Hanafi was a renowned Egyptian thinker and reformer known for the concept of Islamic Left. Islamic Left emerged when various methods of renewing Muslim societies over several generations yielded only relative success, and for some, outright failure, especially in addressing issues of underdevelopment. Islamic Left drew inspiration from the surprising success of the Islamic revolution in Iran, which captivated the world. Islamic Left sought to develop religious reform not only in confronting contemporary threats such as colonialism, protectionism, capitalism, underdevelopment, and oppression, as championed by al-Afghani. It also aimed at the reconstruction of the reformatory religious thought itself.
