Abstract

Speech is the ability to speak in front of the public to tell their opinion or give an idea about something important. This research aimed to analyze the kinds of communication function in illocutionary act in a speech made by Nadiem Anwar Makarim as Ministry of Education as well as identifying the effects contained in the speech made by Nadiem Anwar Makarim. The research used qualitative approach. The approach used in this study is a qualitative approach. In this research to check the correctness of the data from different perspectives, researchers used triangulation. Data analyses used by researchers are consisted of 3 ways in data analysis, namely data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing. The result showed that: 1) All kinds of illocutionary act from Searle were occurred in whichrepresentatives act was the act which was mostly usedin a speech made by Nadiem Anwar Makarim which was 43.66%. Then, in a speech made by Nadiem Anwar Makarim, there was an indication of declaration (14.08%), directives (19.71%), expressives (15.49%) and commissive (4.23%). 2) The speech from Nadiem Makarim was mostly in the form of direct and active sentence (70%). The reason is because Nadiem Makarim state his speech directly by himself, there is no other people or company whom he referred and he mostly used prefix “me” and suffix “kan” to state his speech directly. There is also the form of passive voice, imperative sentence and indirect sentence.

Abstract

The code mixing phenomenon is a common practice in multilingual societies where individuals use more than one language or code in their daily conversations. The use of code mixing is also widely used by artists or public figures on various platforms. This can affect the use of code mixing. This study is aimed to analyze the types, motives, and reasons of the use of code mixing in Boy William’s Vlog. The data were collected by using documentation method and note taking technique. The data were analyzed by using qualitative method. In this case, the analyzed data types were classified by the theory of code mixing types, then the motives and reasons of the code mixing were identified by using the theory from Hockett (1958) to identify motives and Hoffman (1991) to identify the reason of code mixing. The data were presented informally. The result showed that there were found all the types of code mixing, all motives and six reasons, almost every reason for code mixing appears in the Boy William’s vlog, except being emphatic about something. There are three types of code mixing found in the expression of Boy William. Intra-sentential code mixing is the most frequent type of code mixing. Prestige filling motive is the most frequent type of motive that occurred in the code mixing. Talking about particular topic is the most frequent reason of the code mixing.

Abstract

In the world of digital technology, digital advertisement is a process of introducing and persuading the consumer to buy the product. The advertiser also needs to consider the culture, situation, interaction, and population in which the advertisement is addressed. This study aimed to analyze the interpersonal meaning of the “Teh Pucuk Harum” advertisement video. The research is conducted qualitatively. The current research discusses interpersonal meaning using multimodal discourse analysis. Therefore, the analysis will be done on the video, image, speech, and video length. The research implemented the analytical-qualitative procedures. In order to explore the meaning conveyed by the video in terms of the speech and music, image, and duration. “Teh Pucuk Harum” was chosen as the research object because the drink is popular with Indonesian people and the main ingredients as the commodity in Indonesia. Tea is also well-known as a beneficial plant. Thus, the research found the interpersonal meaning conveyed through the video's speech, music, image, and duration. Combining those components attracts the audience’s attention to buy the product.

Abstract

The type of insertion code-mixing was the most dominant type used by students in communicating. This study aimed to analysing the types of code-mixing and the teachers’ reasons of code-switching used by the English teachers in teaching English. This study is a descriptive qualitative research. The subjects of this study are two English teachers who taught English subject. The teachers who teach in 10th and 11th  grades of language major. The data were collected using two methods, such as observation and interview. The instruments used are video recorder, tape recorder, observations sheets, and interview guide. Researcher analyze the data, data collected will be transcribed into written form to facilitate classification. The transcribed data in script form will be analysing using Hoffman’s theory. The results showed that there are three types of code-mixing used by the English teachers. There are intra sentential code-mixing (62.1%), intra lexical code-mixing (18.7%), and involving a change in pronounciation (19.2%). Moreover there are total 198 utterances, which is of 49 utterances used because the students’ English ability are low, 33 utterances used to diagnosing students, 29 utterances used to get closer to the students, 16 utterances used to making a joke, and 71 utterances used because the habit factor.

Abstract

Reading skills are essential to enhance students' reading habits generally, especially when reading English-language materials. However, students still have difficulties in mastering reading skills. Therefore, appropriate learning methods are needed to improve students' reading skills. This study intended to analyze the teachers’ perception in teaching reading with problem-based learning and the challenges faced by the teacher during implementing of problem-based learning in teaching reading at junior high school. This research used qualitative descriptive research using two methods: interview and survey. The subjects of this study were 3 teachers in junior high school.  Data analyze consist of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Based on survey and interview sessions, it was found that the teachers’ perception of implementing of problem-based learning in teaching reading has positive sign. It is showed from the result of questionnaire given to the three English teacher. And for the challenges faced by the teacher during implementing of problem-based learning in teaching reading such as related to the topic that not too interesting for students, teacher who dominant the group discussion, and dysfunctional group.

Abstract

In the development of language, there are many variations of language in society, this is because language is changing continuously, and it is changing in different places. One aspect of language that is interesting to research is affixation. Affixation is a morphological process in linguistics where affixes are added to the root of a word to form a new word. The study aimed at describing prefixes and suffixes that are exist in Kelayu dialect. This is research was descriptive qualitative research. It concerned in the uses of affixation found in Sasak language used by Kelayu villagers. There were three domains chosen. The first was family, second was friendship and third was neighborhood. The data were collected based on five instruments, namely: observation, recording, documentation study/documentation, word list, and note taking. The result of the study showed that there are 7 kinds of prefixes and 4 kinds of suffixes that are exist in Kelayu dialect. The prefixes are {be-}, {ke-}, {me-}, {ng-}, {nge-}, {pe-}, and {te-}. The suffixes were found are {-an}, {-ang}, {-in}, and {-ye}. There was also no indication of infix, it happened because there are no words influenced by infix.

Abstract

Language has a great effect as an important part of human life that is always used in the daily life by human being. It is important to teach and educate the students as ESL/EFL students about phrasal verbs in order to make them understand and capable in using phrasal verbs especially when they have interaction in English. This study aims to analyze the phrasal verbs, types and the meaning of phrasal verbs that are found in the movie entitled “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban”. The instruments of this study are the researcher as the main instrument and a checklist that is used to collect the data. This study used documentation as the method of the data collection. The result of this study showed that there are 102 of phrasal verbs that were found in the movie. There were two types of phrasal verbs that were found in this study, such as transitive phrasal verb (separable phrasal verb and inseparable phrasal verb) and intransitive phrasal verb. Both of the types of the phrasal verbs were found in the movie of this study. Those are consisted of 74 of intransitive phrasal verb and 28 of transitive phrasal verb (14 of separable phrasal verb and 14 of inseparable phrasal verb).

Abstract

Writing is the one of crucial skills in learning English. students can communicate their emotions, ideas and. opinions through writing. Discovery Learning is a teaching-learning activity in which students construct their knowledge by identifying the information to help them to be critical thinking. However, students enjoy learning writing. Therefore this research aims to analyze English teacher strategy in teaching writing using discovery learning. The design applied in this research is qualitative research and the technique of this research is a case study. The subject of this research is the English teacher of MTsN. Data collection used three instruments observation, interview, and documentation.  The result of this research, there are five roles of discovery learning that the teacher used, that are: (a) Stimulation, (b)Problem Statement, (c)Data Collection, (d) verification, and, (e)generalization). The advantages of discovery learning namely; (1) supporting learner’s active participation in the learning process; (2) think creativity; (3) highly students motivate, allow finding something by themselves. Using discovery learning can improve students’ ability to think freely. Specifically, discovery learning trains students’ cognitive skills to find and solve problems. Discovery learning strategy is very suitable to use to improve students' writing skills independently.

Abstract

The problem faced by human beings is the inability to live together harmoniously with others. This problem can be solved by learning and adapting local wisdom in every situation, this confirms that local wisdom is one of the crucial things to teach in schools. Local wisdom is very important because it contains moral values. The aim of this study is to analyze the material based on local wisdom has an effect on students' reading ability. The research design of this study is a quasi-experimental research with a non-equivalent control group design. This study was conducted on students of 12 grade senior high school, the sample used consisted of experimental and control classes each with 22 students, and the instruments used are test and non-test. The results of inferential statistical analysis using the paired sample t-test showed that the average value of the results of the experimental class's pretest reading ability was 67.77 while for the post-test experiment it was 85.55. In addition, the results of the questionnaire showed that there were about 89% of students gave a positive response, so it can be concluded that the application of material based on local wisdom has an effect on students' reading ability.

Abstract

The teachers had not implemented HOTS-based learning well, moreover there were no varied introductory books let alone additional sources that support the learning process in the 21st century. This is very important to note considering that children have entered junior high school and have stepped on a higher level of learning. This study aims to developing a HOTS-based supplementary learning book for 7th graders in the first semester. This research design used the ADDE (Analysis, Design, Development, and Evaluation) model, in which the object of the research was a HOTS-based English learning book. The development of the book was based on the English learning syllabus used. Observations, interviews, document studies, and expert judgments were used to collect data in this study. A teacher in in junior high school was a participant in this study. The study found that this supplementary material book gave satisfaction to the target user. In addition, judging from the qualifications of experts, this product was referred to as a very good worksheet so that it was expected to be useful for 7th grade students and teachers.
