Abstract

Penelitian ini merupakan sebuah studi tentang penelitian dan pengembangan, dimana bertujuan untuk mengembangkan flashcards dan buku manual sebagai media pengajaran kosakata Bahasa Inggirs untuk anak usia dini di Singaraja. Subjek dari penelitian ini adalah 5 guru Bahasa Inggris, terutamanya dari Sekolah Dasar Negeri. Sekolah - sekolah itu ialah SDN 1 Baktiseraga, SDN 1 Banjar Bali, SDN 2 Banyuasri, SDN 2 Pemaron, and SDN 3 Kampung Baru. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain model yang diajukan oleh Hannafin dan Peck. Instrument yang digunakan ialah panduan interview, kuesioner untuk guru dan siswa, dan lembar penilaian. Data dalam studi ini dianalisis secara qualitatif dan quantitatif. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa ternyata guru tidak memiliki flashcards yang mempuni. Flashcards yang dikembangkan memiliki 11 kategori dari kata benda dan dilengkapi deng buku manual. kualitas flashcards dan buku manual mendapatkan skor hampir 5 (skor tertinggi) dari ahli, dimana hal itu berarti sangat baik. Berdasarkan apa yang telah disebutkan sebelumnya, dapat disimpulkan bahwa sebenarnya guru disekolah tidak memiliki flashcards yang mempuni, sehingga flashcards yang mengandung 11 kategori kosakata benda ini dikembangka, dimana flashcards ini dilengkapi dengan buku manual dengan penilaian keduanya yang sangat baik.Kata Kunci : Pengembangan flashcards, flashcards untuk anak usia dini The present study was a Research and Development study which intended to develop flashcards and the manual book as teaching media for teaching English vocabulary for young learner in Singaraja. The subject of this study was five English teachers in Singaraja, especially the state Elementary school. They were SDN 1 Baktiseraga, SDN 1 Banjar Bali, SDN 2 Banyuasri, SDN 2 Pemaron, and SDN 3 Kampung Baru. This study used design model proposed by Hannafin and Peck. The instruments used in this study were interview guide, questionnaires for teachers and students, and the evaluation sheet. The data was analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. The result shows that teachers actually did not have any representative flashcards. The flashcards developed in this study covered 11 categories of noun and they were provided by manual book to support the implementation of the develop flashcards. The quality of the flashcards and the manual book got score almost 5 (highest score) from experts, which belonged to the excellent category. From the aforementioned result, it can be concluded that the teachers did not have any representative flashcards, therefore the development of flashcards which contained 11 categories of noun was conducted, and was supported by manual book in which their qualities were excellent. keyword : The development of flashcards, flashcards for young learner

Abstract

Abtrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menginvestigasi syok budaya yang dialami oleh guru Australia, faktor yang menyebabkan terjadinya syok budaya dan bagaimana cara mereka untuk beradaptasi dalam budaya baru di Youth Center Ubud Bali. Peneliti ini merupakan studi kasus dengan pendekatan kualitatif. Subjek penelitian ini adalah tiga orang guru Australia yang tinggal di Youth Center Ubud Bali. Data dari penelitian ini diambil dengan menggunakan wawancara yang terstruktur dari tiga orang guru Australia di Youth Center Ubud Bali. Data kualitatif ditranskripsi dan dianalisis secara deskripsi. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa ada tiga puluh enam syok budaya yang dialami oleh guru Australia di Youth Center Ubud Bali. Ada tiga faktor yang menyebabkan timbulnya syok budaya yaitu perbedaan budaya, Bahasa dan pengalaman social. Lebih lanjut, ada tiga cara yang dilakukan oleh guru Australia di dalam proses beradaptasi di lingkukan budaya baru seperti; melakukan komunikasi, berteman, dan menghargai budaya lokal. Data dari observasi dan wawancara menunjukkan bahwa guru Australia mengalami permasalahan di dalam menyesuaikan diri dengan budaya baru di Ubud Bali. Kata Kunci : Kata kunci: peralihan budaya, syok budaya, guru asing Abstract This study aimed at investigating the culture shock phenomena experienced by Australian expatriate teachers, the factors which cause the culture shock, and how they adapt to new culture in Youth Center Ubud Bali. This present study was a case study with qualitative research design. The subjects of this study were three Australian expatriate teachers who work as teacher Youth Center Ubud Bali. The data of the study were collected by using structure interview from three Australian expatriate teachers who teaches in Youth Center Ubud Bali. The qualitative data were transcribed and analyzed descriptively. The result of the study show that there were thirty-six culture shock phenomena of Australian expatriate teachers in Youth Center Ubud Bali. There were three factors which cause culture shock, such as cultural differences, languages difficulties, and social differences. Moreover, there were three ways of Australian expatriate teachers use in the process of adapting new culture such as doing communication, making friends, and respect the local culture. The data from observation and interview show that the Australian expatriate teachers experienced problems in adapting new culture in Ubud Bali. keyword : Key words: cultural transition, culture shock, expatriate teachers

Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan tipe-tipe dari strategi komunikasi yang digunakan oleh staf pelayanan informasi di Jatiluwih Rice Terrace, tipe dari strategi komunikasi yang paling banyak digunakan oleh staf, dan alasan dari strategi komunikasi yang digunakan oleh staf. Penelitian ini menggunakan qualitative design. Metode yang digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data adalah observasi dan wawancara. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa ada delapan tipe strategi komunikasi yang digunakan oleh staf pelayanan informasi di Jatiluwih Rice Terrace, yaitu; Message Abandonment (17%), Circumlocution (1%), Non-linguistic Signal (18%), Literal Translation (6%), Foreign zing (11%), Appeal for help (10%), Stalling or Time Gaining (18%), Comprehension check (11%), and Clarification request (8%). Time gaining dan Non Linguistic signal merupakan tipe strategi komunikasi yang paling banyak digunakan oleh staf. Ada dua alasan utama dari strategi komunikasi yang digunakan oleh staf, yaitu; (1 untuk menghindari kesulitan bahasa yang akan dihadapi oleh staf agar membuat pengunjung lebih mudah untuk memahami dan tidak bingung tentang ucapan dan (2) untuk membuat komunikasi lebih efisien dan menyediakan waktu untuk berpikir.Kata Kunci : strategi komunikasi, layanan informasi, jatiluwih rice terrace The purpose of the study was to find out the types of communication strategies used by the Information Center Staff at Jatiluwih Rice Terrace, the type of communication strategies mostly used by the staff, and the reasons of communication strategies used by the staff. The subject of this study was the Information Center staff at Jatiluwih Rice Terrace. This study employed qualitative design. The methods of data collection were observation and interview. The findings of study showed that there were nine types of communication strategies applied by Tourist Information Center staff at Jatiluwih Rice Terrace, namely; Message Abandonment (17%), Circumlocution (1%), Non-linguistic Signal (18%), Literal Translation (6%), Foreign zing (11%), Appeal for help (10%), Stalling or Time Gaining (18%), Comprehension check (11%), and Clarification request (8%) Time gaining and Non Linguistic signal were the communication strategies that were mostly used by the staff. Abstract

This study aimed at investigating the effect of Social Interactive Writing Method on the students’ writing competency. Randomized Posttest-Only Control Group Design was applied in this study which consists of 56 students. The instruments were analyzed descriptively and inferentially. The result of the analysis shows that the students who were taught by using Social Interactive Writing Method better than the students who were taught by using Conventional Method. It had been proven from the mean score was 87.64 while the control group was 67.92. Furthermore, from the analysis by using inferential statistic, it was found that the value of t observed (tob) was 12.012. It was higher than t critical value (tcv) which was 1.64 (ɑ = .05). After comparing t observed and t critical value, it was clear that t observed (tob) exceeded t critical value (tcv). In conclusion, the alternative hypothesis was accepted. Therefore, it could be confirmed that the application of Social Interactive Writing Method gave significant effect toward students’ writing competency. Keywords: Social Interactive Writing Method, Writing competency

Abstract

Abstract             This study aimed at describing the communication strategies used by bilingual children of interracial marriage family in doing interaction with their family at Singapadu village, Sukawati distric, Gianyar regency, Bali province. The subjects of this study were two bilingual children of interracial marriage family. The investigation focused on the types of communication strategies that they used in doing interaction with their family, the most frequently communication strategy that they applied when they were doing the interaction, and their reasons in using the communication strategies. This research was a case study which combined qualitative and quantitative analysis in which a triangulation technique was used. The results of the data analysis show that the bilingual children used seven communication strategies which included: topic avoidance, approximation, circumlocution, clarification request, paralanguage, using pictures or objects to help conveying message, and speaking slowly. The most frequently used communication strategy used by the bilingual children was paralanguage. There were three main reasons that they stated in using the strategies, the first to make the family understand of what they expected, the second because the strategies were easy and natural, and the last reason because the strategies were quick to be used. Keywords: Communication strategies, children of interracial marriage family

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan jumlah prefiks dan sufiks di Dialek Peliatan dan jenisnya dari Infleksi dan Derivasi. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif Qualitatif. Dua sampel informan dari Dialek Peliatan dipilih berdasarkan seperangkat kriteria. Data dikumpulkan menggunakan 3 tehnik, yakni: tehnik observasi, merekam, dan wawancara (mencatat dan mendengarkan). Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa ada enam jenis prefiks dan tiga jenis sufiks di Dialek Peliatan. Prefiks tersebut yakni prefiks {mə-}, {n-}, {ŋ-}, {ñ-}, {sa-} dan {pə-}. Sufiks tersebut yakni sufiks {-Λŋ}, {-Ιn} dan, {-ɔ}. Jenis prefiks dan sufiks yang tergolong derivasi adalah prefiks{mə-} dan {pə-} dan sufiks {-Λŋ} dan {-in}. Jenis prefiks dan sufiks yang tergolong infleksi adalah prefiks {mə-}, {n-}, {ŋ-}, {ñ-} dan {sa-}dan sufiks {-ang}, {an} dan {-in}. Kata Kunci : Kata kunci: prefiks dan sufiks derivasi, prefiks dan sufiks infleksi, dan Dialek Peliatan This study aimed at describing the number of prefixes and suffixes in Peliatan Dialect and its types of inflectional and derivational. This study is a descriptive qualitative research. Two informant samples of Peliatan Dialect were chosen based on a set of criteria. The data were collected based on three techniques, namely: observation, recording technique, and interview (listening and noting) technique. The results of the study show that there were five prefixes and five suffixes existing in Peliatan Dialect. The prefixes were {mə-}, {n-}, {ŋ-}, {ñ-}, {sa-} and {pə-}. The suffixes were {-Λŋ}, {-Ιn} and {-ɔ}. The prefixes and suffixes that belong to derivation are: prefix {mə-} and {pə-} and suffix {-Λŋ} and {-Ιn}. Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui program sekolah yang melibatkan orang tua dalam pelaksanaanya dan dampaknya terhadap prestasi literasi bahasa inggris siswa di taman kanak kanak dwi bahasa Aura Sukma Insani Singaraja. Program sekolah yang melibatkan orang tua di analisis menggunakan kerangka keterlibatan orangtua oleh Epstein et al.(2002), sedangkan dampaknya terhadap prestasi literasi dini bahasa inggris akan dilihat melalui penilaan oleh guru di sekolah tersebut. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain penelitian deskriptif kualitatif untuk menganalisis program sekolah dan dampaknya pada prestasi literasi dini bahasa inggris siswa kelas B1 di Aura Sukma Insani TK dwibahasa Singaraja. Hasil dari temuan, menyatakan bahwa (1) ada 12 program sekolah yang melibatkan orang tua di Aura Sukma Insani Bilingual kindergarten, yaitu academic counseling, parents conferences, parents meeting, and parents interview, memo book, teller book, students’ portfolio, report book, observation day for parents, book week, introductory to library, weekly assignment, individual learning plan, and school outing, dan (2) dampaknya terhadap prestasi literasi bahasa inggris siswa yaitu dapat membuat prestasi literasi dini bahasa Inggris menjadi sangat baik, dikarenakan orang tua menjadi sadar terhadap kemampuan yang dimiliki setiap anak.Kata Kunci : program sekolah, keterlibatan orang tua, prestasi literasi dini bahasa inggris This study aimed at analyzing the school programs involving parents in Aura Sukma Insani bilingual kindergarten Singaraja, and analyzing its impact toward the students’ English early literacy achievement. The school programs involving parents in this study were analyzed by using framework of Epstein et al. (2002) of six types of parental involvement. The present study used descriptive qualitative research design to analyze the school program and the English early achievement of the B1 class students. The data were collected by interviewing the school head, and teacher’s assessment on literacy worksheet analysis. By the end of data collection, it was found that (1) there are 12 school programs involving parents in Aura Sukma Insani; academic counseling, parents conferences, parents meeting, and parents interview, memo book, teller book, students’ portfolio, report book, observation day for parents, book week, introductory to library, weekly assignment, individual learning plan, and school outing. (2) The impact of school program toward the students’ English early literacy of the students in Aura Sukma Insani bilingual kindergarten is the increasing awareness of the parents about their children ability in learning which can eventually support the students English Early literacy achievement.keyword : Schook program Involving Parents, English Early Literacy Achievement

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk (1) mendeskripsikan dan menganalisis bentuk komunikasi verbal guru ketika memberikan penguatan positif pada kelas bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing di SMP N 1 Mengwi, (2) mendeskripsikan dan menganalisis komunikasi nonverbal guru ketika memberikan penguatan positif pada kelas kelas bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing di SMP N 1 Mengwi, (3) mengetahui persepsi siswa terhadap komunikasi verbal dan nonverbal guru ketika memberikan penguatan positif pada kelas kelas bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing di SMP N 1 Mengwi. Penelitian ini menggunakan rancangan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Subjek penelitian ini adalah dua guru bahasa Inggris dan 140 siswa di kelas 8A, 8B, 7K, dan 7L kelas di SMP N 1 Mengwi. Data penelitian ini dilakukan dengan mengumpulkan beberapa instrumen, yaitu peneliti, lembar observasi, perekam video, dan angket. Hasil penelitan ini menunjukan bahwa (1) bentuk komunikasi verbal guru ketika memberikan penguatan positif adalah bentuk tuturan deklaratif, interogatif, dan imperatif; (2) bentuk komunikasi nonverbal guru ketika memberikan penguatan positif adalah kinesik, haptik, dan proksemik; dan (3) persepsi siswa terhadap komunikasi verbal dan nonverbal guru ketika memberikan penguatan positif adalah siswa merasa termotivasi, percaya diri, nyaman, dan semangat. Selain itu, siswa senang dan suka ketika guru menggunakan komunikasi verbal dan nonverbal dalam memberikan penguatan positif. Kata Kunci : bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing, penguatan positif, komunikasi verbal, dan komunikasi nonverbal This study aimed at (1) describing and analyzing the forms of verbal communication used by teachers in providing positive reinforcement in EFL classes at SMP N 1 Mengwi, (2) describing and analyzing the forms of nonverbal communication used by teachers in providing positive reinforcement in EFL classes at SMP N 1 Mengwi, (3) identifying the students’ perception toward verbal and nonverbal communication used by teachers in providing positive reinforcement in EFL classes at SMP N 1 Mengwi. This study was a descriptive qualitative research design. The subjects of this study were two English teachers and 140 students at 8A, 8B, 7K, and 7L class at SMP N 1 Mengwi. The data of this study were collected by using several instruments, namely the researcher, observation sheet, video recorder, and questionnaire. The result of this study showed that (1) the forms of verbal communication used by the teachers in providing positive reinforcement were declarative, interrogative, and imperative; (2) the forms of nonverbal communication used by the teachers in providing positive reinforcement were kinesics, haptic, and proxemics; (3) the students’ perception toward verbal and nonverbal communication used by the teachers in providing positive reinforcement were they felt motivated, confident, comfortable, and enthusiastic. Abstract

One of the ideal purposes of communication is giving information, but sometimes information is delivered in certain condition to make another intention. The violation of such ideals then occurred based on one?s reason and can be observed by looking at the available context. Of all the reasons behind maxim violation, politeness is one of them. It is an essential part of communication which could maintain a good relationship between both speaker and hearer. Teacher is one of the essential parts in education sector. In teaching and learning process, teacher sometimes violate the maxim to imply a more encouraging yet polite responses. In this study, the writer had combined two variables of pragmatics study which occurred in the ground of educational sector. In this study, the writer had combined two variables of pragmatics study which occurred in the ground of educational sector. The writer then tried to define the way on how Mrs. AS, one of the English teachers in SMPN 3 Singaraja violates the maxim and also its relation with politeness. Videos of teaching and learning process had been taken and transcribed to provide an authentic data. The result of the data shows that 229 utterances had violated maxim while achieving politeness at the same time. The writer then tried to define the way on how Mrs. AS, one of the English teachers in SMPN 3 Singaraja violates the maxim and also its relation with politeness. Videos of teaching and learning process had been taken and transcribed to provide an authentic data. The result of the data shows that 229 utterances had violated maxim while achieving politeness at the same time. Abstract

Penelitian ini adalah penelitian tindakan berdasarkan kelas yang bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah penggunaan teknik Gambar Dictation dapat meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dalam menulis paragraf deskriptif, terutama dalam mengembangkan ide-ide, mengorganisir ide-ide, tata bahasa, menggunakan mekanika yang tepat, kosakata dan konten. Penelitian ini dilakukan dalam dua siklus yang terdiri dari tiga sesi pada setiap siklus. Ada dua jenis data (kualitatif dan data kuantitatif) yang dikumpulkan melalui tes, kuesioner, dan buku harian penulis. Hasil tes menunjukkan bahwa prestasi menulis siswa ditingkatkan pada setiap siklus. skor rata-rata siswa adalah 54 di pre test, 65,4 di post test 1, dan ditingkatkan menjadi 80,4 di post test 2. Hal ini dapat dilihat pada jumlah siswa lulus ujian. Ada 1 siswa lulus dalam pre test, 16 siswa di post test 1, dan 28 siswa di post test 2. Hasil kuesioner dan buku harian penulis menunjukkan bahwa siswa memberikan respon positif terhadap penerapan teknik Picture Dikte. Hasil kuesioner menunjukkan bahwa 6 (18,2%) dari siswa mengakui bahwa mereka benar-benar suka dan 20 (60,6%) dari siswa seperti penerapan teknik Picture Dikte. Selain itu, beberapa siswa mengaku bahwa mereka termotivasi dalam belajar bahasa Inggris menggunakan teknik Gambar Dikte.Kata Kunci : Keyword: Teknik Gambar Dictation, Menulis Prestasi, Teks Deskriptif This study was classroom based action research which aimed to find out whether the use of Picture Dictation technique can improve students? ability in writing descriptive paragraph, especially in developing the ideas, organizing the ideas, grammar, using appropriate mechanics, vocabulary and content. This study was conducted in two cycles consisting of three sessions in each cycle. There were two kinds of data (qualitative and quantitative data) which were collected through tests, questionnaires, and writer?s diary. The result of the tests showed that the students? writing achievement was improved in each cycle. The students? mean score was 54 in pre test, 65.4 in post test 1, and improved became 80.4 in post test 2. It can be seen on the number of students passing the test. There were 1 student passed in the pre test, 16 students in the post test 1, and 28 students in the post test 2. The result of questionnaire and writers? diary showed that the students gave positive response toward the implementation of Picture Dictation technique. The results of the questionnaires showed that 6 (18,2 %) of the students admitted that they really like and 20 (60,6%) of the students like the implementation of Picture Dictation technique.
