Abstract

In EFL context, it is believed that developing writing skills is more complicated than developing other language skills. In order to be able to write well, the foreign language learners need to be equipped with early and continued writing experiences. Thus, the teacher’s task to develop the students’ writing skill is more complicated than the other skills. One of the most current issues to deal with such phenomena is to ferret out the writing strategy that is able to enhance the students’ writing ability as well as to reinforce their critical thinking in writing by maximizing the use of both sides of the brain (the left and the right hemispheres). In response to such issues, this paper takes into account mind mapping as a strategy in writing and elaborates the theoretical review of mind mapping for better understanding. Keywords: Mind Mapping, Writing

Abstract

The research aims to explore the representation of woman scientist in film Agora. Agora is a film focusing on the life of a woman scientist and philosopher named Hypatia who lived in Alexandria at the end of 4th A.D.  The research uses semiotics that is applied to explore the signs and the meaning of the film. The signs are in the forms of visual and verbal signs, such as the image, dialogue, setting of place, plot, character, narration, etc. The result of the analysis shows that Hypatia is represented as a legend in astronomy and philosophy who dedicated all her life for science. Beside represented as a scientist, Hypatia is also an icon of sexual freedom though her choice for not getting married. She wants to make sure that she gets her liberty as any other man so that she is able to pursue the knowledge. Her reputation as a scientist, a rationalist, a skeptics bring her into her own symbolical power. Such symbolical power and unwillingness to subjugate to the dominant power leads her to her tragic end of her life. Hypatia is one of the first victims in the clash of science and the intolerance of religion. Though some historical inaccuracy, the films shows that the film maker confidently made a particular interpretation on the history. The social cultural setting of the story is on the rise of Christianity and the fall of Paganism in Alexandria at the end of 4 AD. This culminated in the destruction of the famous Library of Alexandria, where the largest part of the ancient Greek knowledge in mathematics, astronomy, philosophy and literature was preserved. Keywords: Agora, Hypatia, Representation of Woman, Alexandria, Pagan

Abstract

Seemingly, the classic Arab criticism experienced terminology crisis. Besides the word-meaning balance, our critics seized upon dichotomization in the poetry theory, with many arguments were about the two terms of (tab') temper and (takaluf) pretense with no specific meaning being given to each. Our classic critics have been using multiple terms to suggest such dichotomy. For example, to indicate improved and cultured poetry, they have been using such terms as (takaluf, sana'a, mataskalaf, matakalif, sani'). However, for term temper our classic critics typically used numerous synonymous words which, in fact, indicated the same meaning. Such terms as temper, innate, genius, talent, disposition, wittiness, and intuition are all represent poetical faculty, or poetical energy of a poet. Despite diversified, such dichotomous criticism terms are synonymous; a poet, for instance, should already have the inspiration and poetical faculty in order to compose poetry. Only then and next to temper comes assuming (sana'a) and pretending (takaluf) by a poet in an effort to produce improved and reviewed poetry which reflect development of a community. Keywords: Mushthalahah, Thab’i, Shan’i , Naqd

Abstract

This research attempts to depicts the language used in Indonesian television, especially in news, editorial, and talk show in post reform era. The main issue in this research is the language used in Indonesian television contributes to the formation of democracy in this country. To answer the question, this research applies Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) that is able to portray the social processes and the language that is representation of the social processes, including their genres and registers. The results show that news exploits recount whereas editorial and talk show employ discussion genre. The recount and discussion genres in news and editorial and talk show accelerate the atmosphere of democratization in Indonesia. News provides facts and phenomena whereas editorial and talk show discusses them.  However, in the level of register, editorial and talk show exploit the use of more raised evaluation that a number of communication experts believe that Indonesian editorial and talk show go beyond the democracy level or are still provocative. Keywords: Bahasa Demokratis, Genre, Register, Appraisal

Abstract

This paper discusses class and gender discrimination in Tarian Bumi, a novel written by Oka Rusmini (2007). Class and gender discrimination can be seen through the differences in actions, statuses, and positions between the brahmana class and the sudra class, and between the male and female characters, not only in domestic issues, but also in public issues. The differences in actions, statuses, and positions are manifested in the oppression of the lower class (sudra and female) by the stronger class (brahmana and male). This paper adopts a feminist approach to investigate the class and gender discrimination as found in the novel. Keywords: Teori Feminis, Diskriminasi Kelas, Diskriminasi Gender, Perempuan Bali

Abstract

The implementation of Hindu teachings in Bali poses a blend of the universal Hindu faith concept (Pancha Sraddha) and the indigenous wisdom. One of the indigenous elements is the use of kajang or drawing of sacred scripts on small piece of cloth used as a cover of corpse in the cremation ceremony. There are two urgent problems at issue here: (1) In what manifestation can God be glorified through kajang scripts? and (2) Why is God worshiped in the kajang scripts? The data collection in this paper is carried out by observing the data contained on the kajang scripts based on bibliographical studies and seeing in person the use of kajang in the cremation ceremony, and then analyzed them in a qualitative descriptive method. Results of the analysis undertaken are (1) Manifestation of God worshiped in the form of kajang scripts is the Supreme God, Ruler of Rwa Bhineda (basic dualism), Trinity, Shiva, the Ancestors, Devata Nawa Sanga and (2) The worship with the meaning of invocation to God consist of: invocation to attain moksha and sanctity as well as to get protection of the Gods and forgiveness. Keywords: Teks, Ngaben, Aksara, Simbol, Doa

Abstract

Study on philosophy of language, especially on contemporary Islamic thinker, is very needed for enriching thinking spectrum on this object. We hope this paper can open our horizon on this topics and enhance our knowledge especially on philosophy of language in Islamic perspective. This paper affords to describe Shahrur’s thought on relation between philosophy of language and modernity.  Important findings of the paper are: first, language as important reality in human life. With language realities of human life can be articulated well. So, language is a mirror of reality. Second, when we understand that “language as mirror of reality”, actually we make language passively. Shahrur’s philosophical thought on language gives us understanding that language can be functioned as active tool for developing progressive ethos and value for supporting modernity in Islamic world. Third, Philosophy of language gives us possibility for raising a new horizon of understanding on language as object of study. Keywords: Shahrur, Filsafat Bahasa, Modernitas

Abstract

Novel is sometimes more powerful than other types of literature and art, as such novels are directed to the widest possible audience. They are dramatic works which show interesting qualities by drawing the readers’ interest. Novels also cultivate the imagination, contribute to and deepen the capacity for moral reflection. Novel about Indonesian Muslims, written by non-Indonesians, need to get more attention because the novel has the power to create the identity of Indonesian Muslims through its representation. The identity represented will be viewed not only by Indonesian Muslims but also by people all over the world. Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) serves as the study’s main theoretical foundation and Fairclough’s Three-Dimensional Model of Discourse is used to analyze the roles of religious leaders and the indication of power relations between the Indonesian Muslim leader and the American Christians. Categorized data are analyzed predominantly using textual analysis, a qualitative method. Results reveal the roles of religious leader are significant in building the character of Indonesian Muslims. Further, power relations between the Indonesian Muslim leader and the American Christians are constructed by language and paralanguage used in their interaction and communication. Keywords: Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), Indonesian Muslims, Kiai

Abstract

Context awareness in tertiary education is a crucial aspect. This awareness should be perceived by university students to maximize their academic potentials. In so doing, this mini research employs context analysis about: text, the purpose of text, the setting of text, the audience of text, the relationship between reader and writer, the expectations and conventions and the requirements of texts, shared values, background knowledge and understanding of text, intertextuality, the tone of text, assessment criteria followed by intercommunication of discourse community as proposed by Johns (1997). The context analysis on the disciplinary assignment through the active role of students as researcher is necessary. This would sensitize students what to do and what not to do in the learning activities. Furthermore, being well-informed on ethnographic writing, the study of academic practices in the university, is salient. This can be done, one of them, through the interview with the lecturer of a specific course as well as to some extent negotiate the academic practices. This positions the students as an active agent in learning. Keywords: Student as Researcher, Context Analysis, Ethnographic Writing, Genre
