Abstract

The primary narration of The Rooster Bar novel is about the trapped life of the three characters in a scholarship program for poor people. In the story, the D.C. offered the United States of America scholarship program. The scholarship requires the characters to pay all the loans after they graduate. Thus, these characters could only have one specific scholarship program for poor people. This study analyzed the strategy of sovereignty in retaining the homo sacer subjects and the forms of resistance from three characters to escape from the retention as the homo sacer group. The research methodology is descriptive and qualitative by taking note of the essential data related to the formal objects and analyzing them. The novel showed that the minor and poor community, especially students, were allocated into one zone which in a high educational institution to fulfill the scholarship scheme as the realization of homo sacer retention. This situation reduces the poor student from the rights and protection in the legal order. The retention is based on a state of exception, sovereignty, and apparatus as the unity to keep the characters failed to flee from the homo sacer status.

Abstract

The interesting finding of this research is the model of teaching Arabic for foreign student developed by   Malik Sauud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. In the past, the teaching Arabic for foreign student or non-native in Arab mostly used direct method, while in this research it is found out that there are five important things in teaching Arabic language. The first, the Arabic language teaching   needs specific dormitory for the foreign students so that all of the program can be applied exclusively. Second, the direct method , is still applied completed with communicative approach and various strategies. Third, the use of multi-media is considered important eventough the tutors are native speaker. This also shows that   teacher-centered has shifted into student-centered sothat teachers take role as facilitator. Fourth, the materials presented are suited with Arabic culture and the culture of students’ origin. Fifth, the phase of evaluation is considered most important to measure the success of learning Arabic language. The shift of language learning model  of Arabic language in Arab country as applied in   Malik Sauud University, Riyadh, Arab Saudi can be a new trend in developing Arabic language and culture  teaching learning. Keywords: Ta’liim, Jami’ah Al-Malik Sauud

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to discover positive-self and negative-other representations of Brunei’s Sharia Law on LGBT through the lexical choices used by the New Strait Times and Bangkok Post also reveals the ideology from both of the media. This study uses a qualitative approach with critical discourse analysis as the research design. Following Van Dijk’s analytical framework, the words were selected and classified into word class, type of meaning (lexical or contextual), and category (positive or negative).  Ideology from both media is obtained from the cognition analysis of the journalist's expression based on the co-text, context, and social context (social condition). The result showed that both media used lexical choices that indicate positive representation of LGBT by stating LGBT as victims, while negative representation on Brunei’s Government, Muslim, and Sharia law as a persecutor. There were four methods in indicating the positive representation of LGBT; noun/noun phrase representation, detailed information on a noun, verb indicating accusation, and verb indicating discrimination; also there were three methods used to indicate negative representation of Brunei’s Government, Muslim, and Sharia law; noun/ noun phrase representation, verb indicating negative actions, and verb indicating provocations.

Abstract

Several studies on translation have been carried out, namely on the problem of untranslation, translation of terms from various fields, and the formation of target language terms with spelling adjustments. One of them is the field of thermodynamics which is part of the field of Mechanical Engineering, which has many terms borrowed from Dutch and English. Therefore, the researchers are interested in investigating the morphological aspects of the translation of thermodynamic terms using the natural borrowing technique. This study used qualitative research methods. Researchers took terminology data from two books, namely The Fundamental of Engineering Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics. The results showed that the forms of borrowing that occurred were (1) borrowing by adjusting spelling and pronunciation adjustments; (2) borrowing with spelling adjustment without pronunciation adjustment; (3) borrowing without spelling adjustment, but with pronunciation adjustment; (4) adjustments to the spelling of prefixes and bound forms found 15 forms of adjustment; (5) suffix spelling adjustments found 20 forms of adjustment; and (6) a combination of translation and borrowing. In short, morphological aspects in translating thermodynamics terms are very important because they relate to the technique used.

Abstract

This paper questions the urgency of foreign language learning at early age by covering some arguments on the acquisition and bilingualism. Nowadays in Indonesia, under the interest of education, bilingual learning is undertaken by adopting the theory of bilingual acquisition referring to Chomsky’s ideas. In fact, the foreign language learning is not always in line with the principle of language acquisition especially for the early age children. The globalization era requires foreign language mastery so that for many institutions of children education have got the bilingual learning. As the example, some of Islamic educational institutions at the level of playgroup have applied the instruction in English and teaching Arabic words, by considering that the earlier foreign language learning is the better, and the fact that the golden age of brain development occurs at the first five years. This needs to be analyzed further, because there is also important task to have mother tongue language acquisition. For the community of multilingual such as in Indonesia, the acquisition of many languages is unavoidable. Therefore, parents are faced with two choices: To prior the mother tongue and bahasa Indonesia as second language or encourage the bilingual learning of Arabic and English.

Abstract

Seemingly, the classic Arab criticism experienced terminology crisis. Besides the word-meaning balance, our critics seized upon dichotomization in the poetry theory, with many arguments were about the two terms of (tab') temper and (takaluf) pretense with no specific meaning being given to each. Our classic critics have been using multiple terms to suggest such dichotomy. For example, to indicate improved and cultured poetry, they have been using such terms as (takaluf, sana'a, mataskalaf, matakalif, sani'). However, for term temper our classic critics typically used numerous synonymous words which, in fact, indicated the same meaning. Such terms as temper, innate, genius, talent, disposition, wittiness, and intuition are all represent poetical faculty, or poetical energy of a poet. Despite diversified, such dichotomous criticism terms are synonymous; a poet, for instance, should already have the inspiration and poetical faculty in order to compose poetry. Only then and next to temper comes assuming (sana'a) and pretending (takaluf) by a poet in an effort to produce improved and reviewed poetry which reflect development of a community. Keywords: Mushthalahah, Thab’i, Shan’i , Naqd

Abstract

This study looks at how rivers, resistance and women’s struggle intertwine with each other in 3 fictions set in, respectively, Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam. Not only has a river become life-giving forces, but it is also a locus of diverse social conflicts where women are often the most victimized yet survived. Making use of ecofeminism and related theoretical concepts such as Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato si’ on the environment and human ecology, this study examines the female characters and their ordeals in the three fictions discussed. This study reveals that first, ecological economy depends on water sustainability where women try very hard to protect nature against degradation. Secondly, abuse of women is seen in parallel with abuse of nature. In the end, this study concludes that the women’ resistance against patriarchy confirms the theoretical relevance of ecofeminism for the reading of Southeast Asian fictions.

Abstract

One of the obstacles in foreign language acquisition, including the Arabic is the minimal level of acquisition the students get. This is presumably caused by the unfavorable environment for the students to be accustomed to use the language, that encourages them to be learner-independent. For this reason, the education institution needs to develop boarding school to build the Arabic environment as an active and innovative in the process of language learning. There are some favorable factors as contributing to the language learning process and there are some other unfavorable factors hampering it. However, by involving any party and optimize the school environment, the language acquisition of the students can be optimized.

Abstract

Naguib’s Islamization of science is a response to negative impacts of modern science progress (the West) which according to him is not based on Islamic world view. This has an impact on epistemological aspects, so that it can not be used as a method of scientific development in Islamic science. Therefore, there should be reformation of ontology and epistemology to get harmony and usefullness for the development of Islamic sciences. According to Naguib, world view of Islam is monotheism, unity, integration between psyche and physical, spiritual and material, even the spiritual aspect is more important. Based on this, the source of knowledge is not just the material of objects but the meaning of the object, so that knowledge does not fall on positivistic, materialistic and empiric. The method of achieving knowledge is done through the power of observation, rational thought, interpretations of revelation and intuition. The methods are not contradictory but complementary. As the first step of Islamization of science, which change the aspect of metaphysics (world view) and epistemology, according to Naguib, can be started by Islamization of language
