Abstract

This article studies the meaning of Madurese proverbs commonly associated with violence stereotype of the Madurese. The analysis is conducted by using stylistic approach while the data are collected by means of documentary method. The findings show that Madurese proverbs represent a number of meanings related to violence, that is, physical violence, robust conviction and advice on violence. Those meanings do not necessarily justify the violent nature of the Madurese. Rather, they much imply the principles of Madurese people to strongly uphold self dignity, courage and righteousness. Further research using larger data of Madurese proverbs and other types of Madurese proverbs is suggested in order to obtain comprehensive depiction about Madurese values.

Abstract

Throughout Indonesia’s  long history, the meaning of Indonesian art has been the subject of debate. Is just “art for arts sake”, or is there a more obscure socio-political message behind the more obvious depictions. In socio-political context it would seem that Indonesian art expresses socio-political themes, but in examples depicting surrealism, absurdity, existentialsm, prophetic art and post-modernist etc. Indonesia’s art is nor a modern phenomenon. Indonesia’s art seems to continually focus on the more superficial; ideas without attempting to make even minor changes to past cultural influence. In this context therefore the emergence of a new paradigm is not surprising, and the emergence of a Koranic influence in Indonesian art is becoming the latest paradigm in interpreting the reality and meaning of contemporary indonesian art.

Abstract

This paper discusses the relationship between the language and power in the presidential speech text, which is projected through linguistic features, especially modalities. The data was obtained from a speech delivered by President Joko Widodo during the plenary session of the Indonesian People's Consultative Assembly (MPR RI) for the inauguration of the elected president for the 2019-2024 period and the delivery of the president's vision for Indonesia better. Analysis of this paper from linguistic modalities uses a three-dimensional model of Fairclough's critical discourse (CDA) analysis to answer its research questions. The results show that Jokowi used several linguistic modal verbs in projecting his strength. Based on the modality's context, it can be understood that the president conveyed his strategic desire to be himself when he tried to connect with the audience and build his image, audience, and relationship. The President produces a discourse that embodies assumptions about his leadership and audience's social relationship and affirms his legal authority as president and his power. Through the language used, Jokowi creates, maintains, and explains power he holds in these forums.

Abstract

The use of language must have a connection with the external world, as this relationship relates to its meaning. In literary works, meaning refers to the intention of the author or creator of the work. There are two types of meaning in literature: (1) total meaning, which is the experience of how the literary work is communicated, and (2) prosaic meaning, which is the mode of expression of that experience. Language in literature is highly multidimensional, consisting of words that carry multiple meanings: both denotative and connotative. The implications of this paper emphasize the complex interplay between language, meaning, and intention in literature. By distinguishing between total meaning and prosaic meaning, this study highlights the layered nature of literary communication, where understanding extends beyond literal interpretation to include emotional, cultural, and experiential dimensions. Furthermore, the multidimensionality of language in literature reveals the richness of expression and the inherent ambiguity in human communication. This insight is significant for literary analysis, as it suggests that uncovering meaning requires not only textual interpretation but also an exploration of the broader contexts in which the work was created and received.
