Abstract

Laamiyat al-Arab is a great literary work that was written during the Jahili Arabs, and received great attention from writers and linguists. However, the aspects of the values it contains and its relation to the social context that underlies Laamiyat al-Arabs’ work are not well-documented. Through Goldmann's genetic structuralism approach, the authors reveal the values, characters, and the internal and external factors generating the Laamiyat al-Arab literature. The results show that the lower class of Jahili Arab community, despite their life’s hardship and distress, could deliver noble values and characters of the marginalized people of its time. Further studies are of great necessity to investigate the contents of literary works other than Laamiyat al-Arab to get an actual picture of Jahili Arabs’ literature.

Abstract

Language is an arbitrary code system having close relationship with the ideology, because in any use of the language is ideological. According to linguists language is ideology. The relationship between language and ideology is in its language use and materializing the language in ideology. Words used and the meaning coming up from the words show someone’s position in a certain social class. Language becomes a battle site for many groups and class who take great effort to instill its belief and perceiving. In addition, the relationship of language and ideology can also be seen from its use not only as a means of communication but also language as a tool to influence, change and dominate other people so that the reader or audience will receive and justify the messages, ideas, and thought delivered, even to believe and follow it.

They are dramatic works which show interesting qualities by drawing the readers’ interest. Novels also cultivate the imagination, contribute to and deepen the capacity for moral reflection. Novel about Indonesian Muslims, written by non-Indonesians, need to get more attention because the novel has the power to create the identity of Indonesian Muslims through its representation. The identity represented will be viewed not only by Indonesian Muslims but also by people all over the world. Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) serves as the study’s main theoretical foundation and Fairclough’s Three-Dimensional Model of Discourse is used to analyze the roles of religious leaders and the indication of power relations between the Indonesian Muslim leader and the American Christians. Categorized data are analyzed predominantly using textual analysis, a qualitative method. Results reveal the roles of religious leader are significant in building the character of Indonesian Muslims. Abstract

One of the most challenging problems for EFL students is to be able to express themselves not just grammatically but also acceptably and naturally in English in appropriate contexts.  The ability to produce acceptable and natural expressions in English is closely related to the EFL students’ competence in collocation—which words go together in normal usage. The present study provides an empirical analysis on negative transfer made by Indonesian EFL students in lexical collocation and recommends practical ways to help students improve their competence in collocation.  Data for the study was collected from essays written by 40 EFL university students majoring in English in Indonesia whose native language is Indonesian. The students were asked to write a two- to three-page essay on an assigned topic. Of 445 lexical collocation errors found in the English writing, 321 (72%) were negative transfers of Indonesian lexical collocations into English. The findings suggest the necessity of direct teaching of collocations, the use of The Collins WordbanksOnline, and the need to design bilingual collocation dictionaries. Keywords: Negative Transfer, Lexical Collocation, Indonesian Collocation, Acceptable Collocation
