Abstract

Intercultural communication (ICC) is a dynamic communicative phenomenon due to the cultural value presented in the multicultural communication exchange. The present study aims to explore the intercultural communication between Black and Chinese speakers in the trilogy of Rush Hour. Specifically, this study aims to see the characteristics of Black English and the communicative effects of conversation among speakers of different cultural backgrounds. Through the methods of qualitative descriptive, linguistic behavior is justified to show whether the conventions are acceptable to each community group. The results show that as an American English-speaking, Carter, a Black American is more expressive in using English because he is a native speaker, while Lee, as an L2 English from China, faces more communicative barriers. The cultural value of non-standard forms also adorns such conversation, e.g., phonological and sentence structures stigmatization. Not to mention, Chinese surnames produce homonyms with English pronouns.

Abstract

Translation’s core ideology lies in guiding translators' decision-making processes, particularly concerning the social and cultural aspects of source and target texts. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach. It delved into the translators’ ideological stance in rendering an English novel into Indonesian, focusing on vocative verbal exchanges. The analysis employed Miles and Huberman's interactive data analysis techniques (2014), incorporated Molina and Albir's translation procedures (2002), as well as Newmark's methods (1988). Venuti's theory (2003) was utilized to unveil the translator's ideology. Findings reveal that the translator is inclined towards foreignization at the word and phrase levels. This was juxtaposed with a preference for domestication at the clause and sentence levels. This suggests a nuanced approach, where the translator aimed to preserve the source text's essence in smaller linguistic units while enhancing readability in larger units for the target audience. In essence, the translator strategically positions themselves between the source and target languages, neither leaning too closely towards one nor the other, striving for a neutral stance that upholds the original message while ensuring accessibility for the target readers.

Abstract

Adaptation is the process of transforming one form of art into another one. Many decent films are adapted from great literary work. In the adaptation process, some changes occur in film. It is because film is produced in different way from novel. This study focuses on the transformation of the narrative elements from the short story into the film entitled The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. This study uses the theory of adaptation by Linda Seger to explain the adaptation process from the short story into the film as the sources of data. There are three processes of adaptation: condensing and expanding the material, the process of making the film commercial, and varied changing. The narrative elements theory is also used to explain the structure that builds the literary work.

Abstract

Abstract

Islamic paternal parenting has socially patterned the man dominant language behavior over woman since childhood. This study explores the dominance distributions of high female and low female status in their informal talk strategy, the actual language use,  among the students of The State Islamic Institute of Surakarta in three functional topical units of conversations. The analysis technique was introduced by Sinclair and Coulthard (1975), for which Leech (1983) modifies the speech acts. The data implies that the talk strategy among Muslim females is relatively similar to that of males. The higher female controls and initiates the interaction more while the lower is softer, more polite, more mutually supportive, and more cooperative to whomever she speaks to regardless of the status.Muslim Female; Act; Move; Talk Strategy

Abstract

In semiotics, language is a sign having two components such as ‘significant’ and ‘signifie’ in which the relation of both is arbitrary. For philosophers interested in language, ‘signifie’ is not meaningless as language is metaphor. Meaning will always change. Meaning is also metaphorical and also depends on the difference of the readers’ background. This concept also works for religious texts that do not use the the last ‘signifie’ because omitting the meaning of the text will stop the development of Islam for man’s goodness. In fact, Islam is a religion that as always relevant with the time.

Abstract

This study investigates the portrayal of the autistic character in Atypical film seasons one and two through verbal and non-verbal pragmatic language impairment analysis. The qualitative method and the theory of mind by Attwood and Stemmer Whitaker were employed in the research. This study found that the autistic character in Atypical film made 320 language impairments, including verbal and non-verbal languages. For verbal language impairment, literal interpretations and violation of maxims were frequently found, where the repetitions often occurred. Other quite significant language impairments were monologue, odd prosody, and echolalia. Besides, the idiosyncratic speech was rarely used by the character. For non-verbal pragmatic language impairment, the character mainly utilized clumsy or gauche body language, followed by limited use of gesture and facial expressions, inappropriate facial expressions, and peculiar or stiff gazes. These findings proved that the character of the series was represented as the ASD sufferer with the Asperger syndrome spectrum. Language impairment greatly affected the development of thoughts and how the character adjusted tone and intonation of speech. It was challenging to control verbal language well, so non-verbal communication was often disrupted.

Abstract

There are various kinds of translation strategies proposed by the experts of translation. This study aims to find out the translation strategies used by the English Education students from Faculty of Cultural Studies (FCS) of Universitas Brawijaya (UB) in translating a news article. The translation strategies used by the students are categorized based on the Baker's taxonomy. The result shows that the students employ all of the eight translation strategies from Baker's taxonomy in translating the news article. The three most used translation strategies are translation by using a more general word (95%), paraphrasing using related words (75%), cultural submission and omission (73%). On the contrary, the least used translation strategy is translation by illustration (31%). From the result of the study, it is suggested that researchers interested in translation can conduct more research about the students' translation in a deeper and more specific analysis.
