Abstract:This essay deals with community media in relation to media literacy. After a short discussion on a number of community media characters is made the essay goes further with somewhat detail theoretical presumptions of the roles of media community with respect primarily to the development as Amartya Sen mentioned about. The author suggests that community media may play some significant roles in the development including (a) disseminating information (from varieties of perspective), (b) facilitating public discussion, (c) helping to reach solutions of problems, (d) encouraging participations, and (e) encouraging the development of media literacy. Regarding the last point the author remarks that media community may have a dual-roles i.e facilitating community’s member in media participation and facilitating community’s member in media education.

This study compares the framing’s patterns of the Chinese traditional media and social media in reporting the incident of Tianjin explosion in 2015. Applying frame-building and framesetting theory, this study explores the interplay between online opinions available on Weibo and the Chinese newspapers in different phases of the crisis event. Moreover, it examines the differences in framing the incident between the state-owned party media and the commercial media. The results reveal that various frames applied by different Chinese media in reporting the incident. A complex interplay between Weibo, the Communist-owned and the commercial happened, including framebuilding, frame-setting, and frame-interacting effects.

Abstract: Dayak Jangkang is one of the Dayak’s sub-ethnics that inhabits the Jangkang district, Sanggau regency, West Kalimantan and directly borders with Sarawak, Malaysia. Jangkang Dayak population reaches 45,000. Dayak Jangkang nowadays still maintains and continue the tradition of the ancestors, as reflected in the structure of society, social relations, customs, and culture. Therefore it still maintains and continues the tradition of the Dayak Jangkang’s ancestors in their way of life. Many people, especially those outside Dayak, lack of understanding of their own culture. Therefore, the social conflicts caused by social relations between Dayak Jangkang and migrants (outsiders) are due to the insufficient understanding of the meaning of the symbols.

Abstract:Corporate social responsibility as a paradigm establish and became an importantc roles of business entities. Corporate social responsibility activities is placed and mixing between organization’s goal and social conditions. The aim of the study was to have empirical evidence of using social media, positive and negative impacts in the social and economic fields. A total of 179 respondents accounting students at one private university in Yogyakarta. Data had collected by questionnaire. Furthermore, the data had analyzed qualitatively by using descriptive statistics and item analysis. The implications are useful for digital dependent to be wise in using social media and aware of the positive and negative impacts. In addition, for companies and providers useful to analyze for the utilization of economic and social potential of social media. Â

Abstract: Cult films phenomena have attracts lots of discussion among film critics or communication experts especially for those who studied media, nevertheless research on the films using semiotic remains sparsely. This essay mainly discusses about intertextuality within Nagabonar Jadi 2 based on Umberto Eco’s conception about cult film and attempts to bear its narrative meaning using Greimas’ Rectangle, one among other semiotic methods. The research founded that the film has four propositions of narrative within the film which are nationalism, anti-nationalism, non nationalism, and non anti-nationalism. Salutes and flapping the national flag are the synecdoche of nationalism in this film.

Abstract: A research is closely related to theory. Theory provides guidance and basic assumptions to lead a research. On the other hand, a research delivers ways to develop, formulate, reinforce, and revise a theory. Theoretical approach that is closely related to hypothetico-deductive model is called Nomothetic Theory. This approach focuses on seeking for universal laws and is applied to researches on both science and social sciences. Abstrak: Kegiatan penelitian dalam pelaksanaannya tidak bisa dilepaskan dari teori. Pada satu sisi, teori memandu penelitian dengan memberikan panduan dan asumsi-asumsi dasar. Pada sisi yang lain, penelitian memberikan suatu cara untuk menciptakan, memformulasikan, memperkuat dan merevisi sebuah teori. Pendekatan teoritik yang memiliki keterkaitan dengan model hypothetico-deductive adalah Nomothetic Theory. Pendekatan ini mengarahkan pemikirannya pada upaya mencari hukum-hukum universal dan merupakan pendekatan yang banyak digunakan dalam studi eksperimental ilmu-ilmu alam serta menjadi model penelitian dalam ilmu-ilmu sosial.

Abstract: New media in a form of social media has grown rapidly nowadays. The growth of social media is supported by technological advances connected people around the world. They are connected to each other and easily exchange messages. The transformation has finally weakened the media itself. This is a concept paper combining two methodoloies, namely literature review and content analysis of Presiden Yudhoyono’s Facebook account. This paper reveals that public connectedness within digital era has brought back the media to its original function; media that has only message distribution function, without having message construction function. Abstrak: Media baru dalam bentuk media sosial berkembang begitu pesat. Perkembangan yang didukung dengan kemajuan teknologi tersebut telah menciptakan keterhubungan antar orang. Publik terhubung satu dengan yang lain dan saling bertukar pesan. Transformasi peran dan fungsi audiens akibat kemunculan media sosial itu berpotensi mendegradasi fungsi media. Makalah ini adalah makalah konseptual yang menggabungkan dua metodologi, yaitu studi pustaka dan analisis isi sederhana terhadap akun Facebook Presiden Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. Makalah ini mengungkap bahwa keterhubungan publik di era digital adalah masa ketika media kembali kepada fungsi awalnya, hanya sebagai perantara distribusi pesan, tanpa lagi dilengkapi kemampuan untuk mengemas atau mengonstruksi makna.

Abstract: Headline, the main news in the front of page of a newspaper, is a strategic place to convey information. Of course, headline in yellow journalism ought to be attractive with bombastic content’s characteristic and sometimes it shows off sensuality. Koran Merapi is one of newspaper which has the positioning as a law and criminal newspaper. In other side, Criminal reality always shows some characters such as: suspect, police and victim. Based on constructivism ideas, mass media will always construct reality to be published in media. It means that reality in media will re-construct those characters. The research question is formulated as follows: how is the criminal actor constructed by Koran Merapi? Using critical approach through discourse analysis, the research will investigate the basic idea of occurring construction. Van Leeuwen’s models for the text analysis and Norman Fairclough’s for the context are used to explore actor and marginalization in criminal news. The police are depicted as somebody who is admirable and acts as the superhero. The suspects are depicted as a strong person before the victim but weak before the police. The victims are the characters who are always threatened by crimes, are not able to overcome it without any help from the hero.

Abstract: Studi kasus di industri pertambangan Indonesia dipilih sebagai jendela untuk memahami fungsi public relations (PR) di era paska Suharto. Partisipan memandang era reformasi yang memungkinkan kebebasan berpendapat dan sistem desentralisasi sebagai pemicu untuk menyusun strategi public relations (PR) yang baru dalam menjalin hubungan dengan publik. Personal relationship model of PR ditemukan sebagai model PR yang dominan di industri pertambangan Indonesia. Model ini dipilih sebagai strategi untuk membangun hubungan baik dengan orangorang kunci di komunitas yang dipahami sebagai masyarakat kolektif. Temuan ini mendukung proposisi yang menyatakan adanya pengaruh budaya setempat dan nilai-nilai lokal terhadap paktekPR.
