Abstract

Coherence is a key concept for text comprehension and text clarity. One feature that contributes to coherence is cohesion which is realized in cohesive devices and metadiscourse markers. The current study is about cohesion in professional writings found in The Jakarta Post. Its purposes  are to find out the  cohesive devices and metadiscourse markers and to analyze how the cohesion significantly contributes to the coherence. The study is descriptive and qualitative in nature. The data are 4 professional writings taken from The Jakarta Post. The research results show that the average of the textual cohesion used in the professional writings is less than 50 %. It means that the textual cohesion is not sufficiently used. This also means that the cohesion used in the professional writings does not contribute so significantly to the texts’ coherence. Based on the conclusion above, it is suggested that the students  be reminded the importance of  textual cohesion to contribute coherence. The teacher should teach the students what textual and point-to-point cohesion is. Key words: cohesive devices, metadiscourse markers, textual cohesion, point-to-point cohesion

Abstract

This study aimed at listing the communication strategies applied by Semarang State Polytechnic students sitting in the first year of Business Administration Department in a recorded natural conversation with a native-like speaker.  Through the research question of “what communication strategies do the Polytechnic students use in a casual conversation?”, and using the nine criteria such as paraphrasing, borrowing, and avoiding and  six other criteria of communication strategies, this study evaluated the strategies used to keep a casual conversation run well.  The recorded data were transcribed using ordinary orthography, analyzed and identified what communication strategies were used, then, explained the reason for using them. The result showed that Non Native Speaker managed to carry out a casual chatting, even though it jumped from one topic to another, due to no special topics provided.  Grammatical errors were occasionally made, however, they didn’t hamper the flow of the conversation. The Native-Like Speaker was often found lowering the level of difficulty by slowing the speed of speaking, repeated words with the synonym, and uttering items with considerable clarity. Key words: communication strategies, casual communication, flow of communication.

Abstract

This article reviews two texts used in ‘National Examination Try-out II of 2013/2014 Senior High Schools’ since to the best of the writers’ knowledge the two texts do not represent good texts for a language test. In this respect, the writer shall review the test based on grammaticality, coherence and cohesion of the texts under study. However, it should be noted that this article does not necessarily mean that the writer would discredit the test writer since several factors, such as hectic time, low payment, overloaded teaching tasks, may influence the validity and reliability of the test being produced. Recommended in this article include: (1) the use of authentic texts taken from English newspaper or cyber resources, (2) proofreading prior to publication. Abstract

The  rapid development  of technology influence people’s  life  in  many aspects including  the process of teaching and learning  in university, school  etc. Some social medias are popular in society, one of them is Facebook. This social  networking can be used for any purposes Such as  interacting, marketing, publishing, learning etc.  The study aims to prove whether Facebook’s group discussion can be effectively used to improve reading strategies which are normally developed through classroom interaction. It is an action research design involving one group consisting of 37 students randomly sampled out from a population of 198 students. A plan-act-observe-reflect design of the study will be carried out in two cycles. Each cycle involves pretest, treatment and post test. Cycle 1 is undertaken to see if there is a significant difference between the pretest and post test upon treatment. The indicator of success of the treatment is that the post test outscores the pretest. If it does, then  Cycle 2 will be conducted to convince the results. If the two cycles show an increase in the mean scores, it can be claimed that the method is effective. In other words, Facebook’s group discussion can be effectively used to improve reading strategies. Key words:  Facebook group discussion, reading skill
