Abstract

Indonesia was not a new entity when started to become national country. It was called a continuation of the history of the Dutch East Indies. The people lived under western colonial was a pluralistic society, people separated by social class, ethnicity, religion, race and inter-group. Between the authorities and the people separated along racial lines. In addition there was the separation of ethnic groups associated with the economic, educational and social relations. After Indonesian independence the pluralistic society situation continues. The end of the New Order has opened a Pandora's Box of poor relations between ethnic and inter-religious. As a result many conflicts occurred based on religious and ethnic differences. The conflict heated up as the influx of political interests. The process of political reform gave birth to a new awareness of the relationship between ethnicity and religion. The starting point of this change was when the President Abdurrahman Wahid unlocked barriers on multicultural relationship that respects the differences of cultural orientation among the existing ethnic. From that moment the concept of multiculturalism experienced socialization process within Indonesian society. Key words: pluralism, multiculturalism, colonial, new order, socialization Ketika Indonesia lahir sebagai negara nasional, Indonesia bukanlah  entitas yang baru.

Abstract

It is debatable that Raffles is seemed to be a Universalist or an imperialist. The first refers to a belief that he is an agent of the spread of Western values to the Eastern. Others claim that he is the Western imperialist to the Eastern. This is caused by the forced values to the Eastern. Raffles issued the reformation of policy because the colonialism of VOC and the government of French-Dutch did not have any humanistic policy. He issued many humanistic policies till the end of his government in Java. One of his policies was the slavery tax. The tax was used specifically to abolish the practice of slavery and to the welfare of people. In other side, Raffles forced people to work in his friend’s land, Alexander Hare who opened the plantation in Banjarmasin. The life of workers was really suffering however his thoughts and his efforts becoming an insight to oppose the heritage of feudalism (slavery). To short, there was a lesson learnt why Raffles’ ideas were failed and came back to the previous structure.

Abstract

Wayang beber Pacitan is considered as one of the unique traditional heritage because it is not found in other places. The uniqueness of wayang beber Pacitan can be seen from its shape, function, and meaning. Wayang beber is considered sacred by its community, particularly the relatives of the dalang (puppeter) of wayang beber who lives in Dusun Karangtalun, Desa Gedompol, Donorojo. However, in its development the existence of the traditional arts is threathened because of the influence of modern cultural values. The efforts to revitalize wayang beber has been undertaken by the local government and other related stakeholders. However, the effort to revitalize wayang beber is not yet successful because there are still constraints, both internal and external. The former view of wayang beber as well as the pressure of modern culture has constrained the revitalization of wayang beber. Similarly, transforming wayang beber from community art to tourist art is another constraint. Key words: cultural identity, revitalization, tourism, wayang beber. Abstract

This article aims to explain and to prove the maritime life and tradition of the Indonesian society, especially in Jepara during the pre-colonial period, which in turn can be one of means to evoke the maritime spirit of Indonesian society. The glory of maritime kingdom of Jepara, particularly during the reign of Queen Kalinyamat, was mainly supported by big and powerful naval force. It could be known from the naval military expedition undertaken twice by Queen Kalinyamat to expel the Portuguese in Malaka. However, since the arrival of the West in Indonesia in the 17th century, especially Dutch, the maritime world in the Archipelago declined gradually. Abstract

Jambi region was constituted by plural society. The social relations formed within a long period had created a conducive environment for plural society. The citizens were used to deal with people from different social and cultural background, and the differences of social class, religion, group and culture did not trigger conflict. Furthermore, interactions among ethnics, i. e. Melayu, Jambi, Minangkabau, Banjar, Bugis, Java and Batak even gave birth to new identity; the Jambi society. Nonetheless, the infiltration of big capital owners and trans-migration in 1990s had shaken this stability. The climax took place during the reformasi when a huge number of unrests surfaced, where society demanded the return of the land to the hands of people. It was important to build and employ attempts to lessen the tense and conflicts in this plural society. The local wisdom of Jambi people which has been formed for decades needed to be returned as a foundation for this attempt. Before capitalism dominated the life of the society, the values of local wisdom were proven to keep the plural society in harmony.

Abstract

This study was aimed to describe: (1) the relation among political groups in the system of religio political power, (2) the political system when dealing with foreign trade organization (VOC), and also (3) the political system encouraging vertical mobility of the Javanese society. This research employed historical methods, and the data were collected from both primary and secondary sources. Meanwhile, the reconstruction of historiography greatly regarded diachronic and synchronic aspects. The results of this study showed that religio political power was produced by the process of Islamization. In that political system, there was equality of position between the rulers and the ulama. The ulama as a representation of the people, bring about the consequence that all public policy must be approved by them. Political system is equal to ‘descending of power’. This political system underwent a political change when the central government moved to rural Java, that is changed into nomadism and schizophrenia, because of the strong subordination and repression to the ulama and the opposition groups. The political violence would not build vertical mobility of Javanese people both in education and economic development. Furthermore, this system would face difficulty when deling with the strategy of ex-nihilo by VOC.
