Abstract

Many things change in society as a result of being influenced by technology, one of which is social movements. Increasingly sophisticated technology can drive or present social movements in society. Based on these conditions, this article examines the existence of technology that can produce a social movement in society. In addition, this article uses social solidarity theory; mechanical and organic Durkheim, with a view to seeing the solidarity that appears in social movements in the digital era. This article uses a qualitative research method with a narrative research approach. The result is that social movements in the digital era only prioritize mechanical solidarity, without ensuring equal distribution of awareness of the individuals or groups involved. On the other hand, a social movement in the digital era requires organic solidarity to be able to maximize the goals of social movements.

Abstract

Globalization cannot be detached from the processes and results of global interconnections. As one of the most remarkable products of globalization, the internet appears to have become an important part of many people’s lives. Among the youth, social media is of particular prominence. This study explores the engagement of a group of Indonesian university students aged 20 to 23—also known as the Generation Z—in using social media. The study specifically attempted to inquire into ways in which they perceive social media to impact their lives.  Questionnaire and individual interviews were used as data collection techniques. Analysis of the data pointed to a high degree of ‘addiction’ to social media use among students in general.  The students also revealed both positive and negative impacts of social media use, thus confirming the idea that social media is a double-edged sword that needs to be dealt with carefully and critically.

The Setara Institute (in 2018) designated Salatiga City as the number two Tolerant City in Indonesia. The culture of togetherness, as reflected in the celebration of Halal Bihalal and Christmas Together, in the midst of the multi-cultural society of the City of Salatiga is a fundamental factor in the formation of a tolerant and mutually supportive life order. This type of naturalistic qualitative research, using a critical analytical descriptive approach, makes the Pengilon hamlet community its material object. The results of this study found that religious moderation which was manifested in the celebration of halal bihalal and Christmas together, became a medium for preserving the value of tolerance that was so effective for every level of society in Salatiga City. Such a cultural base can guarantee the strength of the four indicators set by the Setara Institute, namely city government regulations; government action; social regulation; and religious demographics, in the ranking of tolerant cities in Indonesia.

This research aims at developing IPS materials for VII graders of Junior High School (SMP) based on ethnophotography. This study used Research and Development design (R D). The results were analyzed by qualitative analysis technique. The results show that most social studies (IPS) teachers have not yet developed the IPS materials for VII graders of SMP which is relevant to the environmental conditions. The ethnophotography was used to determine the development of IPS materials by photographing/taking pictures of each regional potential to be used as supporting material in IPS materials. Through ethnophotography, the students would be more interested and easier to learn the material, and at the same time, they learn a variety of region’s potential. In conclusion, the IPS material based on ethnophotography can be used as one of the ways to develop teaching materials to get more effective and efficient learning because students can easily understand the material through the photographs displayed in the teaching materials because the photographs show a variety of things around it.

Abstract

There are some concerns that tourism development may result in the losing of cultural identity including social cohesion of local people. This research gives different evidencees. The research found that people in Borobudur maintain their traditional value to reduce social conflict. Through direct interaction between tourists and Borobudur people, many of traditional values including social cohesion of the society are eroded.  This becomes the fact that each people only tried to collect dollar from tourists as much as possible by ignoring togetherness as traditional principle of their live. This may create disharmony among the society. To eliminate this gap, people tried to tighten the relationship through re-empowering traditional social cohesion called “guyub” and “gotong-royong”. It is expected that integrity  and cohesiveness in a social structure could always be maintained. Along with this, satisfying and maintaining at least the traditional social cohesions of  destination community is vital to reduce social conflict.
