Abstract

As a one of the heritage cities in Indonesia, Baubau has many historical heritages which are not only created by local ethnics but also by immigrants. There are three historical landscapes created by the immigrants like China Town by Chinese, Waliabuku by Bugisnese, and Ngkaring-Ngkaring by Balinese. Until now, proper management to preserve the landscapes does not exist and it remains unknown whether this phenomenon is caused by the public perception who think that historical landscapes of immigrants as an unimportant heritage. The objective of this study is to investigate the public perception of historical landscapes that are created by immigrant in Baubau city as an heritage city in Indonesia. The results of survey show that the public regard all historical landscapes must be preserved. However, the landscapes created by the ethnic of Chinese have the lowest degree of public selection as compared to the ethnics of Bali and Bugis. The situation is triggered by the stereotype on the ethnic of Chinese which state that they tend to be more closed and reserved.

Abstract

The objectives of this study are (1) to describe the barter du-hope tradition as a traditional Lamalera exchange system of goods in a subsistence economic system, (2) to explain the barter du-hope tradition resulting in a new kinship competition (prefo) based on mutual trust between communities. This study uses ethnographic methods to be able to get emic of the du-hope barter system. The study was conducted in four villages, namely Lamalera, Wulandoni, Puor and Labalimut. The results showed two main theses. First, the barter du-hope tradition is the economic defence system of the local community. Barter du-hope became the food security system of the Lamalera coastal community and the mountain community. Secondly, du-hope barter transactions create new relationships built on strong social trust. Prefo is a new kinship like family (outside of biological kinship) built on mutual trust between the people of Lamalera and other communities in the mountain area. Social trust is created by exchanging and sharing food items and building joint needs. Preference is a complete moral relationship with a sense and desire to help one another. This research provides support for the development of the local economy by providing support and space for the protected system of the barter du-hope Lamalera, which is now being threatened by the capitalist economic system and the global market.

Abstract

This paper aims to understand the role of urbanization in the emergence of in urban area street vendors. In the case of Semarang, more than 54% of its street vendors come from its hinterlands. These sectors turn to development dichotomy that have a positive and negative impact. Positively, this area becomes people’s economic resilience. In the negative side, more than 60% of vendors make their stall in the public space. This research uses a mix-method approach taking 271 samples, Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and in-depth interview. From this study, it can be concluded that urbanization has led to the outbreak of street vendors through (1) rural-urban migration, and (2) social change as a result of gentrification. Working as street vendors turned out to be an alternative way of life to adapt to global economic uncertainty. Also, there are 71.6% of street vendors open their stalls in 2003-2009, or about 6-7 years after the monetary crisis (1997). It shows that the financial crisis is not the primary trigger for the outbreak of street vendors. Another interesting finding is that there is a new phenomenon in the form of the intervention of the middle class who took part in this business.

Abstract

Da'wah is an effective means of the scholars to convey religious knowledge while maintaining the direction and orientation of the people. However, preaching with the provision of religious knowledge is not enough. Dai need to equip themselves with a pure heart, sincere love for others, love for the homeland, historical knowledge, respect and gratitude for previous scholars and leaders, and sincere aspirations to realize the common good, safety, prosperity and security for the wellbeing of the nation. In this article, the author, based on the thoughts and experiences of Habib Lutfi, the great Indonesian scholar who is also a reformer of Islamic da'wah in contemporary Indonesia, presents a fundamental da’wah thought reform which can be implemented in the contemporary Islamic world.  Habib Lutfi's messages lay a solid foundation for da’wah based on deep spirituality, the sincerity and purity, local history, revitalization of basic religious messages such as birrul walidain, trust in God (tauhid) and tolerance; unity, love for the motherland and arousing pride in the nation's own products. Habib Lutfi also emphasized that the next generation should not disappoint their predecessors , and that unity and economic nationalism for the wellbeing of the nation is closer to daulatul Islamiyah than aspiration for the formalization of religious law. Habib Lutfi's preaching approach summarized in the love for the country has been proven to be effective in tackling the increasing hoaxes and dividing the people. Habib Lutfi's da’wah is flexible, inclusive and based on solid foundation of sanad chain.
