Abstract

This research analyzes the conversational structure of the main host in the talk show "Oshareizumu." The primary focus is on the speaking style and interaction strategies used by the main host, Ueda. A pragmatic approach is employed as the theoretical framework, referencing the theories of Yule (2014) and Lidia Tanaka (2014). This study identifies three instances of pauses, three instances of overlap, and one hundred and nineteen occurrences of backchannel or aizuchi. Ueda's intensive and active speaking style demonstrates a high level of involvement in interactions. The results show that Ueda performs his role effectively, as evidenced by a conversational structure with minimal pauses and overlaps, extensive use of backchannel, and an intensive speaking style. These findings suggest that Ueda's contributions significantly enhance the attractiveness of the talk show.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the politeness of representative speech acts and directive speech acts used in NPO-Volcano’s disaster mitigation guideline materials. The method used on this research is descriptive method with data classification based on Searle (1979)’s illocutionary speech acts category and Brown & Levinson (1987)’s politeness scale of speech acts. On the NPO-Volcano disaster mitigation guide material found 41 data of the representative speech acts, which were used for (1) the stating function, (2) the speculating function, (3) the informing function, (4) the mentioning function, (5) the explaining function, and (6) the suggesting function. For the directive speech acts, 30 data were found, which were divided into three types of speech functions, the command function that used in form of ~verb e, ~te kudasai, ~mashou, the inviting function and the prohibiting function. Furthermore, when analyzed using Brown and Levinson's (1987) Politeness Theory, the representative and directive speech acts in the NPO-Volcano disaster mitigation material guide is using “bold on record” and “negative politeness” type of Brown and Levinson's (1987) politeness theory. The forms of negative politeness used are: the use of indirect expressions, respectful language, impersonalization and nominalization.

Abstract

The virtual linguistic landscape is a study that explore texts or visual information presented through digital media. This research investigates the representation and utilization of the Okinawan dialect within the virtual linguistic landscape of the Okinawan government website. Motivated by the increasing visibility and integration of the Okinawan dialect in digital spaces, this study seeks to examine the patterns of language use, the involved actors and the categorization of signs in this linguistic landscape. Data for the study were collected using observation and documentation techniques, primarily through screenshots of linguistic landscape signs displayed on the Okinawa government website. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach the study draws on the theoretical frameworks of Landry & Bourhis (1997) and Long (2010) to analyze written texts and images featuring the Okinawan dialect in the virtual linguistic landscape of government websites, including Okinawa Prefecture, Chatan Town, Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, and Okinawa Shurijo Castle Park. The findings reveal 101 linguistic landscape signs incorporating the Okinawan dialect, comprising 43 distinct dialect terms, some of which appear on multiple signs. The Okinawan dialect predominantly appears in monolingual Japanese and bilingual Japanese-English signs, with the highest presence in commercial signs such as store names, menus, and souvenir product labels. Official signs, including public notices and nameplates, were mainly created by governmental authorities (top-down), while non-official signs, like advertisements and shop signs were produced by private entities (bottom-up). This study contributes to the field of linguistic landscape research by emphasizing the transformative impact of virtual spaces on regional dialect representation.

Abstract

This research focuses on the phenomena of bilingualism and multilingualism that reflected in the name boards for Japanese culinary businesses in Malang City especially in Lowokwaru District as the data sources of this study. In line with these data sources, the linguistic landscape theory of Laundry & Bourhis (1997) is used to analyze the phenomena that occur. The research method used is a descriptive qualitative method. The results of this study found 9 data in the form of Japanese culinary business naming boards in Lowokwaru sub-district consisting of 6 bilingual data (Japanese-English), 2 bilingual data (Japanese-Indonesian) and 1 multilingual data consisting of (Japanese-English-Javanese). The use of foreign languages on culinary business signboards is a reflection of the reality of symbolic functions and informative functions related to the mindset of people who feel that the use of foreign languages is a form of modernity, has a selling point and more attractive.Keywords: Linguistic Landscape, Japanese Culinary Businesses, Bilingualism, Multilingualism

Abstract

Kinokawa (The River Ki) is Ariyoshi Sawako's first work, which is about three generations of Japanese women living in different eras. Ariyoshi's efforts in writing this novel are evident through the plot which tells the stories of women who lived during this period. Ariyoshi describes in detail the aspects of humanity affected by the rapid changes of the times. Like the seemingly calm Ki River that hides swirling currents underneath, this novel reveals the story of women who strive to cope with the dynamic changes of the times. In analysis, this study uses a feminist literary criticism approach, focusing on the stories of three female characters, Hana, Fumio, and Hanako. In addition to showing the gap between generations and is influenced by epochal changes toward Japan's new age, this study also reveals the dominant representation of women's agency. Through this novel, Ariyoshi exposes the demands that others and Japanese women place on themselves and reveals their strength. With a strong yet calm voice, Ariyoshi develops vivid female characters that make their mark in a world dominated by men.

Abstract

Hikikomori is one of the social problems in Japan. A research on the hikikomori behavior of Tamotsu Tadokoro in Higurashi Kinoko's Manga Futsutsuka Mono no Ani Desu ga was conducted. The purpose of this research is to know and explain the forms of behavior, and factors that cause hikikomori behavior and to find out and explain the efforts made by the character Tamotsu Tadokoro in the Comic series "Futsutsuka Mono no Ani Desu ga" by Higurashi Kinoko to try to get out of hikikomori behavior. The research method used is descriptive qualitative by analyzing media data in the form of comic series based on Saito Tamaki's theory of Hikikomori Behavior, Michael J. Dziesinski's theory of Social Factors that cause hikikomori behavior, and David McClelland's Theory of Motivation. The results showed that Tamotsu Tadokoro experienced seven symptoms of hikikomori behavior and was caused by school environment, family, and individual factors. In addition, Tamotsu Tadokoro was able to successfully emerge from hikikomori behavior because he was motivated to improve his relationship with his family and pursue his goals. Therefore, it can be proven that Tamotsu Tadokoro can be labeled as a hikikomori.

Abstract

Genshin Impact is a game with a story and fighting theme, even so linguistic research with Genshin Impact as the source data is almost not found. When a character in Genshin Impact fights, the character utters an expression when launching a power that is divided into two with the names elemental skill and elemental burst. Researchers conducted this study to find out what types of imperative expressions are used by the characters in Genshin Impact and the relationship between these expressions and the portrayal of character characters. The approach used is a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques in the form of listening notes and documentation. The results show that the voice line characters in Genshin Impact use all types of Japanese imperative expressions, namely command expressions (meirei), prohibition expressions (kinshi), request expressions (irai) and invitation expressions (kanyuu). The relationship of imperative expressions to character portrayal shows that these expressions describe a lot of the story background and character identity.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze the polysemic meanings of the Japanese verb miru. This study examines the lexical and grammatical variations of miru, focusing on its meanings as described in the Daijirin dictionary and contextualized through examples in the Japanese novel Totto-chan, which has been translated directly into Indonesian. Using a qualitative approach, this research applies descriptive and interpretative analysis to explore how miru operates across different contexts and nuances within the novel. The findings reveal that miru encompasses a wide range of meanings, from visual perception to deeper conceptual and introspective senses, which are sometimes untranslatable without losing meaning in the source language. This research highlights the complexities of Japanese polysemy and contributes to a deeper understanding of linguistic nuances in Japanese, emphasizing the importance of context in translation and interpretation.
