Abstract

Kata-kata kunci: compounding, istilah teknologi informasi, makna leksikal. AbstractIn linguistic it is a process of word formation that is very productive in which two or more words are combined into a new word. This process is often found in the formation of new words or terms in the field of information technology. Compound words for terms in the field of information technology sometimes have a different meaning from the lexical meaning of each word that makes up the compound words. Therefore, this paper is written to describe compound words contained in information technology terms, to describes how to write them, and to describe lexical meanings of the compound words. Based on the analysis using a descriptive method, it was found that compound words in information technology have some combinations of elements by way of writing using open form, hyphenated-form, and closed/solid form. Meanings of compound words that are formed through the  compounding process in the information technology terms seem to maintain lexical meaning of each constituent word rather than forming new meanings. Keywords:  compounding, information technology terms, lexical meaning

Abstract

This study analyses Indonesian stand-up comedy performances by three comedians, Raditya Dika, Ryan Adryandhi, and Abdel Achrian. Assuming that the stand-up comedy’s opening and ending are the crucial part besides the jokes telling itself, the present study tries to investigate the pattern of their opening and closing compared with the Rutter’s (1997) pattern known in British stand-up comedian. Basically, stand-up comedy is similar with common conversation since it involves two participants, the comedian and the audience. The 153 lines of conversation are extracted from the videos are randomly collected from YouTube video site from 2011 to 2013. Conversation analysis on humor is the most appropriate framework to be used in the present study. As the result, the opening and closing indicate some similarities with the Rutter’s pattern.

Abstract

Indonesia University of Education (UPI) takes an important role and responsibility in teachers' training of Japanese language education which is popular at senior high school in Indonesia. UPI is supposed to provide with training regularly to generate qualified Japanese language teachers. Even so, it is seen a significant difference among students in terms of the motivation toward learning Japanese language education and the effort to acquire title for being Japanese language teachers. This research aims to know the motivation of Japanese Education Study Program's students through analysis of the open-ended questionnaire survey result. From the coding result acquired, it was discovered that the majority of the students who were motivated to choose Japanese Education Study Program were influenced by their interest in Japanese language itself, and this interest is affected by the presence of an interest in pop culture and their learning experience in senior high school. In addition, 33% of all the students are considering becoming a Japanese language teacher as one option, which is less than the ones who are considering finding a job as not Japanese language teacher. Also, more than 50% of all the students want to continue their study to the higher level, i.e. master degree.

Abstract

It has become a trend in film industry, either in national scope or international scope,  that literary works are adapted into movies. Some people think that it decreases people interest on reading literary works, which is already low, as most people tend to prefer watching the movies instead of reading the literary works. However, if we study this matter further, it is very possible that it happens the other way around. This article tries to highlight some important points of film adaptation from literary works, its possible roles in literary learning, and some practical applications of its utilization in literary learning in the classroom.

Abstract

This paper is based on the phenomenon of dancer or “tayub” which is celebrated as a very popular cultural artifact in public life, particularly in Java. This tradition is originally part of a sacred ritual, which ultimately became a performing art, but tends to be viewed negatively. In a historical context, the dancer was originally seen based on cultural concept and evolves into culturally sacred profane. Negative reception of ronggeng is not only uttered orally but also embodied in the written tradition. It is found in the genre of literary fiction such as in Trilogy Ronggeng Dukuh  Paruk written Ahmad Tohari (2003), Ronggeng works Dewi Lingga Sari (2007), and Karti Kledek Ngrajek by S.W. Warsito (2009) . The results of this study illustrate that the figure of dancer who is represented in Indonesian fiction are various. Although there are similarities, but the authors tend to have different reception levels regarding “ronggeng”. “Ronggeng” as cultural artifacts is the manifestation of the ability of local communities to respond and adapt to the environment actively. Similarly, what is represented in fiction about “ronggeng” is a mirror of the society where the work was born.

Abstract

This study, specifically aims to examine the phenomenon of clipped or attenuated words which often takes place in the spoken language. Data for the study were collected from 20 personal blogs of two groups of gender with different sexual orientations (men and gays) selected randomly from blogspot.com from 2009 to 2012. The data were analyzed using semantic prosody as the theoretical approach. New information was extracted from the analysis ofthe clipping or attenuation of the word “nak.”The findings reveal that the two groups have their own ways of expressing the sense of 'desire' which is realized through the use of the word “nak”  by men and gay speakers based on their expression of  three (3) main 'desires', namely orientation (sexual, financial), intent (good intention, work, marriage) and feeling (faithfulness, laziness). This situation clearly demonstrates that the phenomenon of the use of language mediates the expressions of outburst, concerns, hopes, and aspirations of gender and transgender groups to the extent that both their thoughtsand identities can be detected by the readers.

Abstract

Kata-kata kunci: multimodality, semiotic mode, teks, mode verbal, mode imej  AbstractThis article was especially to serve two main purposes; firstly, it introduces and elaborates multimodality as a ‘ procedure of analysis’ to use to analyze texts which use more than one semiotic mode, particularly those that use verbal and images at the same time. Secondly, this article both explicates technical steps of the procedure that can be used to analyze given texts, and provides an example of the application of the steps. Hence, though implicitly, the article explores the strengths to gain from the application of the procedure. The article supports the argument offered, among others, by Kress and van Leeuwen (2006), and Machin and Myer (2012), who argue that messages sent in a text using two different semiotic modes at the same time, verbal and visual, should be analyzed by a tool of analysis that combines the analysis of verbal and visual such as Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) for the analysis of verbal, and Reading Images for the analysis of the images. These, work together to unearth the messages to allow us better interpretation and understanding of the messages. The relations between verbal-visual are also discussed in this article  Keywords: Multimodality, semiotic mode, text, verbal, images

Abstract

In this era, the importance of English leads people to introduce English education even in preschools. English education for preschoolers isbelieved to help fosterchildren’s language and cognitive developments. However, to achieve this benefit, a sound curriculum is required.Since creating a sound English curriculum is not an easy thing to do, a careful examination on English in the preschool curriculum needs to be performed. This study therefore aims to find out the goals of integrating English as an intra-school curriculum in a preschool in Bandung and the teacher’s attempts to achieve these goals in terms of four basic components of curriculum taken fromCayadong (2011) and Tyler (Posner,1992); the objectives, the materials, the methods and the assessments. A descriptive study using a document analysis, an interview and an observation as the data collection techniques was employed. The finding showed that English was integrated to help children to be able to communicate using English in school and family context in a simple language. Theme-based teaching and learning using drilling and total physical response (TPR) as methods were conducted to achieve the goals. Meanwhile, to make sure of the goals attainment, students wereassessed by using observations and tests.
