The importance of critical education for mentally retarded children in learning Balinese dance is related to learning, knowledge, and training for mentally retarded children. Critical education as an approach that can help marginalized mentally retarded children in obtaining dance learning to realize the social reality faced in education. Therefore, this article seeks to find out the relationship between critical education for mentally retarded children and the dance learning at the Denpasar Extraordinary Primary School of Kuncup Bunga. Critical education relations relate to the relationship of government stakeholders, teachers, communities, and parents of students who have power over mentally retarded children. The teacher considers mentally retarded children as weak children have unilaterally produced the most marginalized students in the Denpasar Kuncup Bunga Extraordinary Primary School.

Abstract

Abstract The present research is focused on the harmonization between Nusantara and Bali local geniuses for character education at the primary schools in Bali. The research design was purely qualitative. The informants were recruited purposively. The data were collected through in-depth interview and analyzed descriptively and coded according to text genres. Results show that the general themes and sub-themes derived from Nusantara local geniuses are well juxtaposed with the Bali geniuses. These newly derived themes and sub-themes are implemented in the curriculum at the primary schools in Bali. Character education, which include local wisdom and genius, are more reliable and valid for children in Bali. Bali’s local wisdom and genius, which adhere in the Hindu philosophy, are potentially rich for the development of character education’s themes and sub-themes. The central themes and sub-themes fleshed out from the Hindu philosophy are coherently tied into a system of meaningful moral entity. Children may learn moral characters contextually and meaningfully through the national language of Indonesia at schools. However, caution should be taken as the themes and sub-themes are critically beyondthe first and second graders’ cognitive and moral development stages.

Abstract

AbstractSince the transition to post-New Order Indonesia in 1998, new religiousmovements such as Sai Baba have become popular in Bali. In contrastwith the New Order era when Sai Baba was under strict scrutiny, thesegroups are now warmly accepted by a far wider audience and especiallyfrom educated affluent urbanites. In this paper, I discuss several factorsthat make Sai Baba movement generally an urban phenomenon. I askhow change taking place in Bali regarding the economic and demographiccontext may have contributed to the people’s different mode of religiousarticulation. The economic transformation from agricultural economyto modern industrial economy in Bali has changed people’s occupationsand forced urbanization. I argue that the transformation also createstwo emerging cultural spaces of Workplace in the city and Home inthe villages of origin. Workplace is where people are bound to moderndisposition of time and Home is where people are tied to traditionaldisposition of time. These two cultural spaces determine people’s modeof religious articulation. As people move from their villages of origin tothe city, they also adopt a new mode of religious articulation in an urbancontext. I suggest that to understand the emergence of new religions andnew mode of religious articulation in Bali we have to look at specifictransformations at the economic and demographic level.

Abstract

The Imaginary of Bali as paradise stands in stark contrast to what is actually going on. To understand the split requires examining who is authorized to represent Bali as what under what conditions. The issue concerns the nature of argument – whether argumentation and disagreement – and how it disarticulates and marginalize alternatives. The preferred, hegemonic style of argument in Bali is monologue, favoured by those in power, which effectively anticipates and prevents contradiction. By contrast, dialogue is open, democratic and widespread in daily life, but often passes relatively unnoticed. Whereas dialogue enables discussion and problem-solving, monologue re-asserts ideology in the face of uncomfortable actualities. In Bali, the form ideology takes centres on fantasies about an imaginary ‘age-old culture’. The drawbacks are evident in how claims over the cultural antiquity of Tri Hita Karana disguise its grave shortcomings in practice.

Abstract

Abstract: Balinese Frame of Reference. Wassmann and Dasen (1998) did a study on the acquisition of Balinese frames of reference. They pointed out that, in addition to the dominant use of absolute system, the use of relative system was also observed. This article aims at verifying Wassmann and Dasen’ study. Employing monolingual Balinese speakers and using linguistic and non-linguistic tasks, Aryawibawa (2010, 2012, 2015) showed that Balinese subjects used an absolute system dominantly in responding the two tasks, e.g. The man is north/south/east/west of the car. Unlike Wassmann and Dasen’s results, no relative system was used by the subjects in solving the tasks. Instead of the relative system, an intrinsic system was also observed in this study, even though it was unfrequent. The article concludes that the absolute system was dominantly employed by Balinese speakers in describing spatial relations in Balinese. The use of the system seems to affect their cognitive functions.

Abstract

AbstractThe future of Bali’s agriculture is at a cross-roads. Tourismand urbanisation are slowly but steadily dismemberingone of the cornerstones of Balinese culture, the subak andits distinct ways of sharing water, cultivating rice andbeautifying the landscape. A combined effort is requiredof farmers, the government and society to rethink andreappraise the value of agriculture for the Balinese peopleand the economy. Such a change of perception needs toconsider the question of adequate compensation for thework farmers do in the fields, grooming 1000 year oldrice terraces, and planting, irrigating, and celebrating rice.To place Bali in a global context, I examine Switzerland’sprotective agricultural policies, rural developmentplanning and community-led initiatives which may offersome unconventional but pragmatic solutions to turn thetables for Bali’s rice sector protecting the subak institution. At last, I envisage a future for the subak and its members, anactive and proud farming community, not only famous riceproducers and fair water sharers but also recognised andappraised for their services to society as cultural landscapepreservers.

Abstract

Tenganan Pegringsingan Village, as one of the original villages in Bali, has a local wisdom characteristic that is agreed upon by its citizens. Local wisdom is included in the 'awig-awig' (local regulation) village in the form of verbal texts that aim to preserve the flora and fauna of extinction. This study aims to determine the type of flora-fauna lexicon found in 'awig-awig' of the village, and to know the customary restrictions and fines that are set for residents who break them. This research is a qualitative descriptive method using 'awig-awig' as research data and analyzing data through literature review. The results of the analysis found 39 lexicons of flora and fauna that are prohibited from being cut down/killed. The entire lexicon is divided into 9 categories, namely fruit, trees, leaves, tubers, rhizomes, seeds, roots, animals and flowers. Each amounted to 7 pieces, 11 trees, 2 leaves, 5 tubers, 1 rhizome, 1 seed, 1 root, 9 animals and 2 flowers. This study recommends collaboration with various parties to preserve the ecotex contained in the 'awig-awig' village of Tenganan Bali. Keywords : ecotext, awig-awig, local wisdom, ecolinguistic

Abstract

This research is conducted to find out the genetic profiles of Kayuan clan which is belong to Pasek Catur Sanak Bali Mula, indigenous Balinese people. The DNA profiles is identified by using Microsatellite DNA of Y chromosome. Genes or DNA in Y chromosome are descended from father to son (patrilinealism). Four loci of microsatellite DNA from Y chromosome are used, including DYS19, DYS390, DYS393 and DYS395 to amplified DNA samples from 67 males probands.  The probands are people of Kayuan clan from Siakin, Songan, Blandingan and Kutuh villages, Kintamani sub district and others are originally from Jehem village, Tembuku sub district, Bangli regency. The research found 12 allele varieties from all the analyzed loci, which resulted in low genetic diversity (0.33 + 0.001). There are 4 combinations alleles of 4 loci that created12  various haplotypes, the greatest one is haplotype 1 (0.39), followed by haplotype 2 (0.16), haplotype 7 (0,12) and the smallest one is haplotype 6 (0,10). On the other hand, eight other alleles found on the smaller frequencies. Two similar allele combinations were also found on DNA profiles of Celagi clan, which is also belong to the similar family, Pasek Catur Sanak Bali Mula. The two allele are haplotype 6 and 5 found in both, Pasek Kayuan and Pasek Celagi. The haplotype 6 as dominant allele of Celagi clan by adoption, haplotype 5 however, the frequency was the lowest. This allele only detected in one member of each clan due to mutation.
