Abstract

The development of Denpasar, Badung, Gianyar, and Tabanan into a metropolitan area that is called in short Sarbagita can threaten the existence of community rice field land and agrar- ian culture considering that around 32.3% of the rice field in Bali is situated in this area. This study aimed at finding out the accuracy of Pleiades and Ikonos satellite image in mapping rice field land conversion, and producing a spatiotemporal map of rice field land conversion. This study used a quantitative descriptive method through image interpretation, field valida- tion, and Geographical Information System (SIG) technique. The location of the study sample was in Badung Regency Sar- bagita Metropolitan area. The result showed that Ikonos and Pleiades satellite image has a 94.1% accuracy, which means that it falls into the very good category, so that it can be used for mapping rice field land conversion spatiotemporally. The spatiotemporal map produced shows that there has occurred a decrease in rice field area from 10,810.18 hectares in 2009 to 10,565.82 hectares in 2016. The rice field land conversion phe- nomenon tends to shift from that which was previously domi- nant in the south part to that in the north part.

Abstract

Abstract In recent years, many has begun to doubt the continued existence of Bali’s nature and culture in shaping its destination image. The current research was conducted to confirm the existence of culture and nature as the determining factors of Bali’s image as a tourism destination by selecting elderly Australian tourists as respondents, because this group tends to be more loyal and have longer average length of stay compared to other groups of tourists. This research aims to confirmatively answer the existence of Bali’s culture and nature as the destination’s identity and tourism image. The two main research questions are (1) what is the relationship between motivation, destination creation, and destination identity in forming the destination image of Bali? (2) how is the structural model of Bali’s destination image according to elderly Australian tourists? This research was conducting using survey method and quantitative analysis technique, involving 160 elderly Australian tourists. Findings from SEM analysis indicate that internal motivation influences destination image, while destination identity influences destination image, and destination creation also influences destination image. The research concludes that according to elderly Australian tourists, Bali’s culture and nature are remain strong factors in forming the island’s destination image.

Abstract

The Batur volcano in Kintamani tourist resort has enhanced its existence through the establishment of Batur UNESCO Global Geopark since 1st April 2016. However, the two tourist attrac- tions have not been mutually utilized each other. This study is conducted to determine the level of relationship and integra- tion between the two tourist attractions in order to find out beneficial solution for the two tourism industries. The results revealed that not all tourists’ climbers of Mount Batur visited the Geopark as an artificial-tourist attraction, whereas, not all the first tourists who visited the geopark was climbing the sa- cred mountain. Therefore, it is required more intensive efforts in tourism business in order to create a mutual synergy be- tween the two tourist attractions by all stakeholders including government, tourism industry, and the society. This is for the benefit of tourism business and of carrying out the natural con- servation and the preservation of local cultural values.

Abstract

The general aims of this article are to engage and make sense of the Balinese women’s narratives. It is a case study based on the narratives of two Balinese women with different caste-based social backgrounds. Inter-caste communication requires different levels of speech between interlocutors. Consequently, there are two main objectives of this article. Firstly, to explore how life events occurred during inter-caste marriages, and through the telling of these events, the informants determine their levels of speech. Secondly, to examine the identity constructed by the informants through the levels of speech. This article employed ethnographic research, narrative analysis, and sociolinguistics theory. In-depth interviews were conducted to gain meaningful stories narrated by the informants. This study revealed that Balinese women constantly shifted their levels of speech in inter-caste marriage communication contexts. These levels of speech shifting also relate to the showing or negotiating identity construction of these Balinese women.

Abstract

This article examines the commodification of hybrid performing arts in Bali tourism, especially the “Bali Agung - The Legend of Balinese Goddesses” performed regularly at Bali Safari and Marine Park, Gianyar. Data were collected by observation techniques, interviews, and literature review, then discussed with commodity theory and cultural tourism ideology. The study shos that hybridity in this performance is evident from the blended of cultural elements of Bali, China, and Western technology. Hybrid tourism performing arts produced can be communal and institutional in ownership. The hybrid tourism performing art is communal because it is created without copyright so it belongs to the people of Bali, while the hybrid performing arts is institutional because it is created with copyright so that ownership and pro t is only enjoyed by the industry that ‘recreated dan performed’ it. Although di erent, communal and institutional hybrid tourism performing arts have been able to become arts that give new color to the rich variety of Balinese art and culture.
