Abstract

This article is part of the fundamental research carried out for two years (2013-2015). The research method is qualitative which refers to the critical paradigm. The research location is villages representing various districts in Bali and Denpasar city. The results showed that the use of Penjor on Galunga and Kuningan holy day is common in Bali. Penjor is a ritual objects made from a piece of bamboo which its end is intentionally left curved, decorated with various ornaments of young coconut leaves or palm leaves and other supplies. Penjor is installed on the roadside in front of the Balinese family compound’s entrance. Penjor does not only have an artistic value, but it is also rich in symbolic meaning such as visualization of petition prayer addressed to the Hindu deities and dewa pitara (ancestor). The goal is to achieve prosperity for the entire family in the Balinese community. This article is expected to provide a broader understanding to Hindus about Penjor. Penjor is not only a cultural object with artistic values, but it also contains a hidden meaning, namely the prayer of petition in the sociology of religion.

Abstract

Water plays an important role in Balinese society. Not onlyis it commonly featured in Balinese Hindu rituals, butits use and management also enables prosperity through rice cultivation. While these aspects of water have beendiscussed in many academic and non-academic publications, qualitative understandings of relations to seawater remainsomewhat unexplored in the literature. The aim of this paperis to present a preliminary review of existing literature onwater and marine environments in Bali, and argue the needfor further qualitative social scientific understanding ofcontemporary Balinese relations to seawater. A discussionof existing research on ocean-centred communities andcontinued tourism development in Bali’s coastal areas isintended to add to current research in Balinese studies. Bypresenting literature on Balinese concepts of environment, water and the ocean, this paper seeks to highlight thebenefits of continued research on perceptions of environmentto discussions of pollution, water scarcity and resourcemanagement. Although maritime attractions such as thetemples at Tanah Lot and Uluwatu as well as several popularbeach communities play a significant role in the tourismindustry, this paper suggests the need to further investigatethe importance of these attractions to tourists and Balinese aswell as the social interpretations associated with them.
