Scripta-English Department Journal is Journal that publishes academic articles that recognize successful engaged learning depends on effective partnerships between students, faculty, community agencies, administrators, disciplines, and more. The journal invites submission of 1) Research that emanates from or informs campus-community partnerships; 2) Studies co-authored by faculty, students, and/or community partners; 3) Literature, Teaching English as Foreign Language and Technology; and 4) Commentary on emerging trends, developments, and/or challenges. The publication of this journal aims to spread conceptual thinking or ideas and the research findings obtained in the field of English Education and Literature. This journal will publish twice a year; May and November. The scope of Scripta-Journal of English Language Education is on Research on English linguistics and literature. We focus on: 1) LANGUAGE SCIENCE (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, mother tongue, language acquisition, ethnolinguistics, Critical Discourse Analysis/CDA, forensic linguistics). 2) LITERATURE SCIENCE (Oral literature and written literature with various approaches to structuralism, literary psychology, sociology of literature, post colonial. 4) Teaching English as a second or foreign language. The objective of the study is to describe the effectiveness of using think-aloud strategy to teach reading recount text to the eighth grade students of SMP N 3 Gombong. The subject of the study is the eighth grade students of SMP N 3 Gombong in the academic year 2015/2016. In this research, the researcher took 64 students of VIII C and VIII A as sample; they are experimental and control class. The result of the study showed that the students’ progress of experimental group in mastering reading ability is really good. It was found the result of t-value was 4.89. Based on the 0.05 significant level, the value of t-table was 1.68. The computation showed that t- value was higher than t-table, which was 4.89>1.68. Moreover, the mean of control class (71.38) is included into interval 70-79. It means that students of control class have good result on their reading ability. The mean of experimental class (77.13) is included into interval 70-79. It means that students of experimental class have good result on their reading ability. It shows that using think-aloud strategy on the teaching-learning process gives a positive contribution toward the students’ reading ability. So, the use of Think-Aloud Strategy was effective to improve students reading ability in recount text to eighth grade of SMP N 3 Gombong in Academic Year 2015/2016.

The objective of the study is to find out linguistic forms and pragmatic meaning of slogan used in cellular – phone advertisement. The subject of this research is cellular – phone advertisement slogan that consisted of 33 slogans of cellular-phone. This research belongs to descriptive qualitative, it means the researcher uses descriptive data in the form of words written or spoken of the person, the result shows that there are six linguistic forms used in cellular phone slogans as follows: noun phrase 51,51%, verb phrase 21,21%, adjective phrase 6,06%, gerund phrase 9,09%, imperative sentence 6,06%, declarative sentence 6,06%. Pragmatic meaning results are as follow: asserting meaning 42,42%, persuading meaning 9,09 %, informing meaning is 12,12%.An application of research analysis can be used for the eight grade junior high school students on semester 2.

The objectives of the study is to find out whether English songs are effective or not to improve students’ understanding of present perfect tense at the eighth grade of SMP N 10 Purworejo in the academic year of 2014/2015. This research was carried out at SMP N 10 Purworejo in five meetings on May 2015. The population of the study is the eighth grade students of SMP N 10 Purworejo. As the sample, the researcher used 64 students of the total population. The researcher used purposive sampling technique to make sample. To collect the data, the researcher used test as the instrument. There were pre-test and post-test. To analyze the data, the researcher used t-test formula. The result of data computation indicates that t-value is 4.65. It means that t-value of this study is higher than the t-table. The t-table is 1.999. It means that using English songs to improve students’ mastery of present perfect tense at the eighth grade of SMP N 10 Purworejo in the academic year of 2014/2015 is effective, therefore Ha is accepted.

Conditional sentence becomes one of materials in grammar that is complex and difficult to be used by the students especially in senior high school. Identifying the difficulties of conditional sentence is essential to know how well the students master the materials. The objectives of this research are to describe the most difficult types of conditional sentence used by the students and to identify why the students get difficulties in learningconditional sentence. This research uses descriptive qualitative research. The subject of this research is the eleventh grade students (Class XI Bahasa) of SMA N 4 Purworejo. From the findings that the researcher has done, conditional sentence type 3 became the most difficult one. Based on the test, for each type of conditional sentence, type 3 is the highest with the total number of wrong answer are 116 (47.5%), then type 2 with thetotal number of wrong answer are 84 (34.4%), while type 1 is the lowest with the total number of wrong answer are 44 (18.1%). Added by the result of questionnaire as supporting instruments, the most difficult type of conditional sentence is conditional sentence type 3. The result shows that three students strongly agree and twenty students agree that conditional sentence type 3 is difficult. Then, one student strongly agrees and fourteen students agree that conditional sentence type 2 is difficult. While, just nine students agree that conditional type 1 is difficult. Morever, from the result of the interview and questionnaire, the researcher identifies the students’ difficulties in learning conditional sentence, they are the highest graduation is students are lack of vocabulary (66.67%), the second is having to eagerness to master the material (62.34%), the third is having negative attitude toward teaching and learning process (56.79%), the fourth is environment impact to learn English (55.55%), the fifth is not paying attention to the material (50.93%), the sixth is having negative attitude towards English and grammar (54.32%), and the last is the condition of the facilities is not good (22.22%).

The objectives of the research to find out whether there is or not positive and significant influence of students’ habit of listening to English songs on their pronunciation ability. The sample of this research was 26 students used purposive sampling. The instrument to take the data was questionnaire and documentation. The technique of analyzing data were descriptive analysis and inferential analysis to answer the statement of the problem and hypothesis. The result of the research showed that the testing r value was lower than r table (0.185< 0.388) and the R square was 0.34. From the computations, it means that Ho was accepted. Therefore, there was positive and gave no significant influence between students’ habit of listening to English songs on their pronunciation ability at of the second semester students of Muhammadiyah University of Purworejo in the academic year oof 2019/2020.

The purpose of this research is to increase the English vocabulary of students with special needs. One of the online learning platforms use in this research is Kahoot!. The research subjects were SLB D YPAC Semarangstudents who were members of the Y-EClub Semarang. The research method used descriptive qualitative. The results of the research are the members of Y-Eclub SLB D YPAC Semarang using Kahoot! in learn English. They were able to catch the English vocabulary. Conclusion of this research is that Kahoot! as the internet-based platform is an effective medium in English teaching so that students could memorize English Vocabulary.

This research is revieweing the school management based on islamic education. It aims to obtain an overview of the implementation of Islamic boarding school education and a model for the development of education management at the Darul Hikmah Kutoarjo Islamic boarding school. This research problem will focus on how to plan, organize, coordinate, and control Islamic boarding schools. To answer the research problem, this type of qualitative research is used with a descriptive-analysis approach. The results of this study indicate that: a) The Darul Hikmah Islamic Boarding School Education Model is a pesantren education under the auspices of the Darul Hikmah Kutoarjo Foundation. The education pattern of Darul Hikmah Islamic boarding school isa boarding-based modern Islamic boarding school education pattern. In developing the management of the Darul Hikmah Islamic Boarding School, it uses the Target Based Management (MBS) or Management by Objective (MBO) model. The target to be achieved is to focus on education; c) To achieve this education, the management steps taken are: a) Planning. The planning model developed by the Darul Hikmah IslamicBoarding School is a strategic planning model consisting of planning, programming, and budgeting systems; b) Organizing. Organizing is carried out under a decentralized system in the division of powers and tasks and their development; 3) Coordination. Coordination is carried out in an effort to unify a series of activities in the organization of pesantren in order to increase cooperation and togetherness among organizational officials as much as possible; 4) Supervision. Supervision includes monitoring, supervision, evaluation, reporting, and follow-up of assessment results.

The Covid-19 pandemic has brought big changes in teaching and learning activities in the country. Learning activities have changed from face-toface to online teaching and learning. Studying online changes the learningexperience for many students. Rather than sitting in school and taking notes, students are taking advantage of online classes and other forms of online learning. Materials and Methods: Survey and interview. Interviews were conducted with the homeroom teacher. Survey of student scores in the semester before the Covid-19 pandemic and during the pandemic. Results: Based on the results obtained, on-line learning has little effect on learning achievement. Online learning has several advantages and disadvantages over learning face-toface. Online learning offers a potentially better alternative if it is adapted to the situation and conditions of the students.

Abstract. This research aims are to identify the uses of gerunds found in The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes and to describe their application in teaching reading. It belongs to qualitative research. The researchers used a collection of short stories by Arthur Conan Doyle entitled The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes as the data source. The researchers then identified the sentences containing gerund, classified the gerund found in the short story based on its use, counted the percentage of the gerunds, discussed the finding of the analysis, applied the result of finding in teaching reading, and drew conclusion and suggestion. In conclusion, there are 2 gerunds as subject (0.71%), 13 gerunds as direct object (4.59%), and 268 gerunds as object of preposition (94.70%) and they can be applied in teaching reading for the twelfth-grade students of Language Program of senior high school.

This research belongs to qualitative research. The aims of this research are to identify the types of correlative conjunction and to explain their functions in students’ research articles. The data source of this research is students’ research articles written by undergraduate students of English Language Education Program at Purworejo Muhammadiyah University in the academic year of 2018/2019. In collecting the data, the researcher checked all the research articles published from August 2019 until December 2019. In analyzing the data, the researcher organized the data from the first correlative conjunction until the last correlative conjunction found in research articles; gave code for each of the correlative conjunctions; classified the correlative conjunctions based on the types: both__and, not only__but also, either__or, and neither__nor; classified the correlative conjunctions based on their functions in joining sentence elements such as words, phrases, and clauses; counted the data; discussed the finding; and drew conclusion and suggestion based on the data in this research. The result of this research shows that there are 91 correlative conjunctions found in 46 research articles: 39 both__and (42.86%), 40 not only__but also (43.96%), 8 either__or (8.79%), and 4 neither__nor (4.39%). There are 25 conjunctions connecting words (27.47%), 65 conjunctions connecting phrases (71.43%), and 1 conjunction connecting clauses (1.10%).
