Abstract

Ali Syariati is a world-class and brilliant scientist. He argued that Islam has a very principled nature and rational. Therefore, Islam must be considered as a school of ideology, not as a culture or collection of science. He displayed and introduced his teachings with what is termed as a liberation theology that combines re-interpretations of Islamic beliefs and socio-modern political thought. In addition, he also took an interest in the issue of humanism. He explained in detail and at length about this issue, both in the view of western leaders and intellectuals from the east. He said that today we face four different intellectual streams that states he represents humanism, namely western liberalism, Marxism, existentialism, and religion.

Abstract

Studying of the Qur'an continuously, integrated and comprehensively becomes a necessity if we want to practice the teachings of Islam “kaffah”. At least, this is the basis of dakwah implemented by the Chinese Muslim community in Makassar. One indicator of being “kaffah” in embracing Islam is always showing moderate religious attitudes in all aspects of life, both individual and collective, at the level of faith, worship, muamalah, and morals. In understanding and practicing the teachings of Islam, the Chinese Muslim community in Makassar reflects religious moderation; therefore, their presence did not cause conflict in Makassar locally, but a blessing for the local community. Their Chinese identity is maintained by reconstructing the religious value of their traditions and culture. In this community, the belief of Islamic theology is not religiously indicated as elements of syncretism. As a result, their Chinese identity survives copes with their Islamic belief. Ultimately, moderate of Islamic teachings, as a religion of “rahmatan lil al alamiin”, is then reflected in their daily lives, including in their religious attitudes and behavior.

Abstract

This article aims to show the rise of violence in society. One of its causes is the power of religious discourse. The issue departs from the moslems who do their religious teaching always refer to the texts of religious discourse. While the texts that they refer, from one to others, are different. It is no problem if the texts that they refer are used as a basis to improve the quality of their religiousity in the private life. On the other hand, if it is also to judge or classify others who disagree in the public, it is very dangerous. Because it is aware or not, it will discriminate and dominate others by using the basis of religious discourse. Discrimination and domination by using religious discourse are called symbolic violence. And actually, this symbolic violence bocomes the root of emergence of physical violence

Abstract

This article examines the complexities surrounding violence by Muslims towards the Ahmadiyya community in Indonesia in its new era of democracy. Violence emerged in 1998 in the post-Suharto era when some Muslim groups, such as Front Pembela Islam (FPI), claimed that Ahmadiyya is a deviant group (aliran sesat) according to Islamic orthodoxy. This article works to understand why and how Ahmadiyya became a target of violent attacks by some Muslim groups in the post-Suharto era by considering the rise of Islamic fundamentalist groups during this time of new-found religious freedom. In doing so, I ask how politics, economy and Islamic theology emerged as significant factors that contributed to the attack. Through identifying particular case studies of attacks in cities across Java and Lombok, I also explore how government creates the policy to find the best solution and how far the effectiveness of this policy to solve the problem.

Abstract

The mapping of political affiliation is important to capture the power direction and its characteristics in the future. Generally, the mass political orientation in Indonesia is not much different than what was outlined by Clifford Geertz in his master piece entitled The Religion of Java. The concept of 'trikotomi' consisting of the Santri, Abangan, and Priyayi, which over the past five decades has been the fundamentally critiqued by various parties. Numerous weak points and fallacy of conceptual framwork then become the entrance to reconceptualize the Indonesian people political orientation. However, the work of Geertz's initial approach should be appreciated as a brilliant in understanding the Indonesian political behavior. With the critical approaches, the Geertz's approaches will again be utilized to mapthe direction of community in the contemporary Indonesian political orientation.
