<![CDATA[This study focuses on implicatures found in the WhatsApp stories. This study aims to find and explain types of implicatures found in WhatsApp stories using the theory proposed by Yule (1996). This study employs qualitative design as the research design. In addition, content analysis is applied to obtain the data in which the writer becomes the key instrument of the study. Interactive data analysis, then, is conducted to analyze and explain the data. The data of the study are taken from WhatsApp stories that appears in the writer’s WhatsApp application. This study shows the findings of the types of implicatures. The data are classified into four types of implicatures: generalized conversational implicatures (5 data), particularized conversational implicatures (7 data), scalar implicature (2 data), and conventional implicatures (1 datum).]]>

<![CDATA[Identitas merupakan label yang melekat dan selalu dibawa oleh manusia baik sebagai individu perorangan maupun sebagai bagian dari komunitas sosial. Dalam pratiknya, sering dijumpai usaha untuk menghilangkan, menyembunyikan, bahkan memalsukan identitas untukkepentingan dan keuntungan. Seperti halnya dalam dua novel pengarang Indonesia yang mengambil geisha dalam ruang lingkup dunia “penghibur”, dimana dalam mengkonstrusi identitas perempuan Jepang melalui cara pemalsuan identitas. Konstruksi identitas yang disematkan pada geisha dalam kedua novel tersebut mempunyai tujuan akhir yang sama yaitu membuat representasi perempuan Jepang yang paling ideal sekaligus digunakan sebagai alat pembangun citra positif bangsa Jepang bahkan menghegemoni masyarakat. Tujuan penelitian ini mengungkapkan bentuk identitas perempuan Jepang melalui konstruksi geisha sehingga akan mengetahui bentuk identitas seperti apa saja yang diwacanakan pada perempuan Jepang sekaligus Jepang secara keseluruhan. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif dengan menggunakan teknik kajian pustaka dan hasil analisis akan diuraikan dalam bentuk deskriptif.]]>

<![CDATA[In EFL settings, in mastering English Language students do not merely study on rule of the language but more on communicative purposes. So, they need more practices using English in the classroom and a teacher has to lead students to always practice English. From the four competences, i.e. linguistic, sociolinguistic, discourse, and strategic competences, they must be integrated to lead students achieve the communicative competence. Authentic materials are not created specifically to be used in the classroom and the use of authentic materials that can be obtained from the materials in surrounding daily life can reinforce the direct relationship between the language classroom and the outside world for the students. It helps students involve in the real language as long as teachers provide them with educational support.]]>

<![CDATA[Implemeting culture and language can be interpreted in terms of conducting observable activities in natural settings or responding/reacting toward the certain situation in accordance with what the doers or speakers do. In interpreting this culture, it can not be avoided from emerging any problems since the implementation involves any other practical value and habits which sometimes can not be observed. The problems becoming so serious whether the doers are demanded to adopt new culture placed directly opposite to their own value and habits. The problems will in the long run emerge as a culture shock. This article highlights the ways of understanding some conviction and cases happened in certain situation or local culture. Understanding this cross culture and language interaction will hopefully contribute a new discourse in specific contexts. ]]>

<![CDATA[Questioning has been becoming the subject of the study since it is regarded as one of the most important ways to maintain the classroom interaction. Several studies have been carried out on the use of questions but most of them are focused on the type of questions used by the teacher. Moreover, the teacher often neglects their non-verbal behavior when they deliver questions to the students. Hence, this study investigates the impact of teachers nonverbal questioning behavior on the students’ participation. The study was conducted with teacher and students of State University of Surabaya (UNESA). The data were the conversations between teacher and students in the Reading classroom taken through video recording and observation. The result of the study shows that teacher’s nonverbal questioning behavior affects much on the students’ participation in the classroom. Maintaining eye contact to the students while asking questions gives a good effect on keeping the students participation. Moreover, the appropriate use of other nonverbal questioning behaviors such as calling the students while asking, giving a right wait time, handling the students’ answer positively, also give positive effect on the students participation.]]>

<![CDATA[This research discusses the community of women writers in Sidoarjo using a feminist sociological perspective. The purpose of this research is to formulate the pattern of relations of this community with the structure of the field of authorship using Bourdieu's perspective. The research method used is qualitative with descriptive patterns. Data were collected using a combination of interview and documentation techniques using library research procedures. The results showed that this community of women writers had an awareness of the existence of dominant-dominated binary opposition structures and included aspects of gender considerations in their authorship strategies, but they chose patterns as used in universalist feminism.]]>

<![CDATA[Perbedaan antara semantic dan pragmatic lebih mudah diaplikasikan daripada dijelaskan. Menjelaskannya diperumit dengan fakta bahwa manyak formulasi-formulasi yang telah dibuat selama 60 tahun yang lalu. Hal ini mungkin menjelaskan bahwa tidak ada satu cara untuk menggambarkan perbedaan dan bahwa bagaimana untuk menggambarkan hanyalah suatu permasalahan terminologi saja, suatu masalah ketentuan yang berubah-ubah. Formulasi-formulasi yang sangat beragam ini, disamping permasalahan-permasalahan mereka, kesemuanya memberikan penjelasan pada perbedaan sebagaimana umumnya diaplikasikan, baik pada linguistik dan filosofi. Meskipun secara umum telah jelas apa yang menjadi masalah ketika orang-orang mengaplikasikan perbedaan pada fenomena linguistik tertentu, apa yang kurang jelas, pada beberapa kasus, adalah apakah suatu fenomena terpilih adalah semantik atau pragmatik, atau keduanya. Untungnya, ada fenomena-fenomena lain yang tidak sekontroversial semantik atau, seperti kasusnya mungkin, tidak sekontroversial pragmatik. Hal tersebut akan membantu kita memahami apa perbedaan semantic dan pragmatic.]]>

<![CDATA[Kemampuan menulis tidak bisa di dapat secara instan, melainkan harus melalui sebuah proses pembiasaan agar tulisan yang dihasilkan berkualitas. Hasil pengamatan Tim terhadap mahasiswa Program Studi Sastra Inggris yang mengambil pemrograman skripsi pada tahun ajaran 2017-2018 menunjukkan bahwa kesalahan-kesalahan seperti grammar (grammatical errors) dan pengorganisasian ide yang tidak runut masih mudah ditemui. Kesulitan ini tentu saja menjadi permasalahan yang sangat penting untuk diperhatikan karena dapat mempengaruhi jangka waktu kelulusan mahasiswa. Kesulitan dalam menulis berbahasa Inggris ini disebabkan oleh beberapa faktor, diantaranya adalah kesulitan untuk menuangkan ide atau gagasan ke dalam bentuk tulisan, kurangnya penguasaan kosa kata bahasa Inggris, dan kurangnya latihan dalam menulis berbahasa Inggris. Student Reflective Journal adalah sebuah media menulis yang berbentuk jurnal atau diary yang bisa digunakan mahasiswa untuk menuangkan ide-ide atau gagasan yang dimiliki, meningkatkan kosa kata bahasa Inggris, serta yang paling penting menjadi media pembiasaan dalam menulis. Student Reflective Journal dibuat dengan desain yang menarik (tidak monoton seperti buku teks), melainkan seperti sebuah diary yang mudah dibawa kemana saja dan menjadi ‘teman’ untuk menuangkan pikiran. Selain itu, Student Reflective Journal di dalamnya memuat prompts (petunjuk kata) yang dibuat untuk memancing ide atau gagasan sehingga mahasiswa lebih mudah untuk memulai menulis, dan juga Student Reflective Journal dilengkapi dengan bantuan kosa kata bahasa Inggris untuk memperkaya kosa kata mahasiswa. Adapun prompts (petunjuk kata) yang diberikan adalah dalam bentuk tematik atau topik yang sederhana yang berhubungan dengan kehidupan sehari-hari mahasiswa. Dengan memilki Student Reflective Journal dan menjadikannya sebagai media menulis, diharapkan mahasiswa menjadi lebih terbiasa dalam menulis berbahasa Inggris dan tidak mengalami kesulitan untuk menuangkan ide atau gagasan yang dimiliki.]]>
