Abstract

Natural forest has many ecological functions which plays a vital role in preserving the ecosystem balance. One of them is to stabilize the climatic condition. This is linked with the forest capability to absorb carbondioxide in the photosynthesis process. The more carbondioxide absorbed and stored in the form of biomass carbon, the more it reduces greenhouse gas effect in the atmosphere. This research aimed to obtain information about the value of biomass and carbon content in the Sentajo Protected Forest. Above ground biomass estimation was done by establishing nine plots with the size 20 m x 20 m. Trees with dbh ≥ 10 cm were recorded in terms of diameter and identification species. Tree biomass was estimated by employing Ketterings et al, (2001). Sentajo Protected Forest  region has great potential in storing carbon stocks. The study results showed that carbon contain in Sentajo Protected Forest is 223,177 ton/ha.   Keywords : forest, carbon, biomass.

Abstract

Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq) is a multipurpose plant which occupies an important position generaly in agricultural sector and particularly in plantation sector. Bright prospects for palm oil commodity in the world encourage people to plant oil palm in acidic mineral soil, which could face some obstacles, on physical, chemical and biological soil properties. In the dry season, oil palm has the type of oil palm roots are shallow making it relatively less tolerant to drought. Because of these problems is an attempt to solve the problem in oil palm land by using organic mulch (oil palm empty fruit bunches, Calopogonium, palm midrib and ferns). This research has been carried out in the experimental farm of the Agriculture Faculty Riau University, from June to September 2012. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of organic mulch on soil physical and chemical properties, as well as the root growth of palm oil using a randomized block design (RBD), that consists of 5 treatments and 3 replications. The results of this study shown that treated soil using organic mulch had the significant difference compare to soil without mulch in the whole observation parameters. Organic mulches can improve total pore space, C-organic, N-total, soil water content and soil temperature and decrease soil bulk density. It also, can increase the weight of the roots, root dry weight, root occupy and the plant root volume.  Keywords: Organic Mulch, Soil Physical and Chemical Properties, Palm Oil

Abstract

Palm Oil plant (Elaeis guineensis Jacq) is one of the most important crops which is plays an important role for Indonesia as a mainstay for export commodities and commodities that can increase the income of Indonesian society. Nursery activities essentially instrumental in the preparation of plant material (seeds) for planting in the field, so the breeding activities must be managed properly. Provision of compost fertilizer on the media used in oil palm seedlings is expected to add the availability of macro and micro nutrients in the soil, so it can increase the biological soil microbes and earthworms  better. To have a good quality seeds, there is ne option through regulatory substances growing plants. The use regulatory substances growing plants on nursery synthetic or naturally aims to enhance the growth of seedlings. One of the regulatory substances growing plants is cow’s urine, in addition to relatively easily obtainable also simple to use. Based on these results it can be concluded that the subtances of cow urine and tofu compost generally showed different results is not apparent after a statistical analysis on the parameters except the ratio of canopy and root dry weight of seedlings. Giving cow urine at a concentration of 40% and compost tofu 225 g / plant has not followed the maximum results in all parameters tested.   Keywords: palm seeds, compost, cow urine.

Abstract

Nettle Caterpillar Setora nitens is a major pest on oil palm. Chemical control to nettle caterpillar Setora nitens has some negative impacts, such as pest resistance, pest resurgence, and environmental pollution. The use of botanical insecticides, such as Piper aduncum L. is one of solutions to decrease the use of synthetic chemical insecticides. The purpose of this research is to obtain the concentration of Piper aduncum L. fruit flour extract which is able and exact to control nettle caterpillar Setora nitens pest at the oil palm plant. This research was conducted in field using Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 5 treatments and 4 repetitions. The treatment concentrations of Piper aduncum L. fruit flour extract are 0 g/l of water, 25 g/l of water, 50 g/l of water, 75 g/l of water, and 100 g/l of water. The Piper aduncum L. fruit flour extract concentration 100 g/l of water is able to control nettle caterpillar Setora nitens pest with total mortality of 85%. The exact concentration needed to kill 95% nettle caterpillar Setora nitens pest is 32,1% or equivalent to 321 g/l of water. However, it is not yet effective because the effective and exact concentration to kill 95% of insect test more than 10% or equivalent to 100 g/l of water.
