Abstract

The millennial era has been initially marked by the development of information technology. This article mainly explores the opportunities and challenges of digitizing hadith in the millennial era. This study belongs to a descriptive qualitative method. In-depth interviews with the Programmers of the Center for the study of Hadith in Jakarta, observation and documentation were conducted to gather data. The result reveals that digitizing the books of hadith provides an opportunity for everyone to access the books of hadith by downloading the hadith digitization application freely. Therefore, people can access the hadith books in both PDF and digital formats. On the contrary, it may lead to academic anxiety or challenges. This is because the hadith books in both PDF and digital formats can be deliberately changed by irresponsible people so that the authenticity of the information and the accuracy of the data will be questionable. Further, this tendency could be misused by certain people, by changing its contents and then disseminating it for the certain purposes.  Regarding this, one of the ways to overcome this is by maintaining its authenticity, updating the content, and adding the copyright to the data source reference using the source check method.

Abstract

To date, Islamic Education in Indonesia is framed in traditional, conventional, and colonial paradigms. Despite the twentieth century’s urges to use interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary, and trans-disciplinary approaches, mono-disciplinary approach such as classic and medieval Islamic education, is still dominating. Researches in the three new methods have engaged neuroscience that results in innovative and reliable works, indicated by the achievement of Intellectual Property Rights with downstreaming potentials. The study aims to find a model for Islamic education that is based on neuroscience in the millennial era with the mentioned attainment. The research applied a qualitative model by Denzin and was located in the Magister Degree of Islamic Education of Universitas Ahmad Dahlan, Yogyakarta, in 2008. It involved six lecturers and thirty-one students. The data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interview, and documentation. The research generates a neuroscience-based model for Islamic education in the millennial era through the development of research-based instruction. Further, the development allows the achievement of Intellectual Property Rights and downstreaming potentials. The model is the continuation of Islamic education modernization initiated by Muhammad Abduh and is relevant to the entrepreneurship of the millennial Muslim generation of the twenty-first century.

Abstract

The Student Islamic proselytizing Organization (LDK) became a machine of cadre forming and expansion for Islamic political movements, Ikhwanul Muslimim (Muslim Brotherhood) and Hizbut Tahrir to achieve their ideological ambitions. These movements were believed to have harmful threat for Islamic moderate in Indonesia. Therefore, the adherents of Islamic moderate at IAIN were trying to take over LDK IAIN Salatiga from Ikhwanul Muslimin. This study aimed to describe and analyze revolutionary movement and its development in shaping moderate LDK networking. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The data were taken from the study of literature, interview and field observation. Research findings showed that taking over LDK IAIN Salatiga by moderate group was started with shaping LDK Nusantara as a means to form cadres. Having been successful in taking over LDK IAIN Salatiga, it then went out from the networking of LDK Ikhwanul Muslimin and planned to establish moderate LDK networking among universities which was called FKKDKN (Communication Forum for-in Campus Islamic proselytizing a whole Archipelago/Nusantara). This article is expected to inspire moderate movements on campuses believed to be machine to form cadres of Islamic political movement and radicalism.

Abstract

This paper discusses the views of Partai Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) on democracy and its implementation in real politics in Malaysian context. I analyze PAS views on the relationship between Islam and democracy, their style in recruiting members and leaders of the party to demonstrate that this Islamic political party follows democratic rules. PAS believes that democracy and Islamic values are compatible and it is a good political tool for an Islamic party like PAS to reach its political goals.  By examining the process of recruitment of members and leaders of PAS as the cases, the paper shows that commitment of PAS in toning up democracy in Malaysia could be viewed in their style of recruiting their leaders. The PAS has exercised democratic rules in their internal party activities, particularly in the way they recruit their members and how they chose their leaders.

Abstract

This article examines mutual relationships in the historical teachings of Christianity and Islam. Drawing on John B. Cobb, Jr’s  mutual transformation theory, the article argues that early Christians and Muslims scholars have learned from other traditions in developing their religious teachings. I employ historical writings on the key figures and the early scholars of both religions. Based on documentary research, this article illustrates the mutual contact with other religious communities in the history of Christianity and Islam. Both Christian and Muslim Classical philosophers touch upon classical Greek Philosophers to develop intelectual traditons and teachings. As a result of the encounter, mutual transformation invites people to be involved in a deep dialogue and to be openhearted to learn, from the teachings of other religious traditions.

Abstract

This study aims to figure out a ‘political’ contestation of sacred mosques in Java and the ways the Javanese respond to the global architecture of the Middle Eastern Islam. By using a historical narrative method, this article describes a fact that some ‘sacred’ architectures which shaped from the national mosques became a site of battles between the modern Islamic and traditional Javanese worldviews and explores the continuum debate over architecture, culture, and power of Islam in Java through various events since the fifteenth until today. This study, finally, results in the issues related to not merely the almost unsolved dispute over modern and traditional architectures, between pan-Islamic modernists and Javanese traditionalists, but most importantly, the past stories and silent ideology behind the building of these mosques, and by doing so, it also questions our primordial understanding of nation-state.
