Inter-religious conflict has been part of the history of religions. To the dismay of many, the conflict has escalated from time to time overshadowing the benevolent nature of religions as a blessing for mankind. Hence, instead of addressing the formidable problems of poverty, backwardness, ignorance, injustice, oppression and the like, people of different religions in one way or another are dragged into the acts of violence. It is this unfortunate development in the history of religions that we are interested in discussing by appealing to the ideas of Farid Esack who has established himself as an international scholar of Islam. We portray Esack as a man whose attention is being paid solely to promote the inter-religious dialogue with a single purpose in mind, to push peace and harmony for all regardless of their race and religion. We are particularly interested in developing further the idea of what he calls a ?productive dialogue? in which an awareness of religious solidarity constitutes an integral part. We will try to expose the ?hermeneutics of awareness? to get a better idea of what Esack is trying to do as far as social harmony is concerned. Within this scheme we will also discuss some other related issues such as the problem of pluralism and liberation. We argue that Esack sees the problem of social harmony as essentially theological and not simply political. It is therefore the task of religion?and not simply of politic?to deal with such problem.

The main problem that this paper is interested in dealing with is the notion of taqlid, the English translation of which being a blind acceptance. Taqlid is the opposite of Ijtihad, the intellectual exercise to draw certain legal rules from their sources. Muslims over centuries believed that taqlid in legal matters is not allowed, and that the door of Ijtihad has never been closed, as some Western scholars would emphatically argue. The paper nonetheless maintains that taqlid does take place in a major part of Islamic legal history. It has become unavoidable for Muslims to accept blindly ?due to some reasons- the legal views of the earlier scholars and jurists. But the paper also argues that to accept without question the views of the authoritative scholars in legal matters is not always bad. The paper tries to show that there are ?due to some conditions- positive things in committing Taqlid. To show this, the paper would attempt to scrutinize the historical facts in which Muslims do benefit from doing Taqlid. It means also that, Ijtihad is not always good for Muslims. By presenting some findings -the paper will argue- that in some cases, Muslims should abandon independent intellectual exercise and resort to blind acceptance if in doing so would bring benefit for them.

It seems legitimate to say that the classical-conventional methodology gives birth to a rigid and theo-centric view of Islam. This form of methodology is dogmatic and is replete with a systematic indoctrination, such that would lead one to accept a particular view of religion often blindly while believing that other views are wrong. This paper offers a challenge to that old-fashion methodology by deconstructing it, and then constructing a new form of methodology. We treat the classical methodology as being literal-normative, and the new one that we propose as being contextual-historical. We argue that the former has gone out of context, because it was invented for its own time. The latter in the meantime is critical and considerate to new demands and contexts. We speak of this new methodology as characteristically multi-disciplin-ary in the sense that within its premises, various forms of knowledge are deemed to have been interconnected and together constitute an integral web of epistemic construction.

The study is aimed at exploring the Qur'ānic concept of education. It argues that the Qur'ān mostly speaks of education in terms of character-building and tries to inculcate noble values upon human being in such a way that the good characters may be attained. Hence, the paper is of an argument that the Qur'ānic concept of education is ethical; it imposes ethical values upon human being. But the aspect of ethics that the paper will be speaking is that which has to do with ethics in social interaction. The paper will look at some key terms that the Qur'ān uses to infer to this social interaction which include qaulan sadida, qaulan ma'rufa, qaulan baligha, qaulan masysura, qaulan karima, and qaulan layyina. To offer a better explanation of what social interaction is all about, the paper will address and invoke some social setting in which people interact one another. In other words, the argument of the paper will be invalidated by the social facts found on the ground. This study is thus both normative and empirical.

The paper discusess the idea of Hijrah and its historic role in the process of Islamic propagation (da?wah). Hijrah is a physical migration from Mekkah to Medinah; a migration that has implied both religious and spiritual transofrmation. In its literal meaning, Hijrah is simply to move from one place to another. In the history of da?wah, Hijrah is a moment in which Islam underwent a process of change and transition from one situation into another. Hijrah was the first stepping stone toward the more vibrant and active propagation of Islam. The paper deals with this notion of Hijrah as the strategic move toward the successful mission of disseminating Islam. These issues together with the many implications that Hijrah has will be the focus of this paper. The paper argues that Hijrah is not simply to make a physical movement from one place to another. It is also about the spiritual and religious transformation of the Muslim ummah. Through Hijrah a new social, political and cultural order is resurrected. To make our discussion more lively, the paper will refer to many Qur?anic verses and prophetic traditions that speak of Hijrah and interpret them in the light of the historic Hijrah. Hence, we look at Hijrah as not only an event in history, but also a norm of religion that has a spiritual value of its own.

This paper discusses the highly controversial issues in the northern part of Surabaya; an issue that has attracted the attention of both parents and teachers alike, the issue of High School students? attachment to the values of Islam. Many worried that given their attitude, these students have no concern whatsoever with the basic principles of Islam. This paper will show the otherwise by investigating carefully the notion of career choice among these students. This specific field of investigation has not received proportional attention from any field researcher apart from its significance both to the state of our education and moral conduct. The paper first argues that the attitude of these students is more complicated than many have assumed. It then tries to show that religious values are in fact the strongest determinants in students making their career choice. This theory comes as a serious challenge to many baseless assumptions that as a religion Islam has lost its influence over its younger followers. This research is done in different areas in the northern part of Surabaya. The questionnaires are distributed at random representing each area proportionally. The data are collected through these questionnaires based on the theory of Holland RIASEC.

The basic question that this paper tries to answer is, is it possible for the values of different ?often contending- religions in a single country to be the basis for the nationhood? Or, can the values of a single religion in a country where different religions exist be the basis of the state? The answer that this paper propagates is certainly no. But another question arises. What then the values ?assuming that values are a must in a society or country as a term of moral reference- that must be adopted by all? It is toward answering this question that this paper is aimed at. It argues that religious values are universal and meaningful for human kind. They can serve as the basis for human benefit and well-being. But these values ?often originated from different religions- must not only be accommodated but also be reconciled. And the reconciling concept cannot be a religion, for that would mean that we support one religion at the expense of others. Hence this paper proposes that what has commonly been known a civil religion be the common ground -the sacred canopy as it were- in which various religious values can be integrated. It is in other words, the integrating mechanism for different religious values, which in turn can bring the social and political harmony for all citizens. The paper will discuss particularly this notion by referring to the concept of the Nahdhatul Ulama (NU) on nationhood and national identity.

The relation of Islam as a religion and the notion of human right has attracted a lot of attention both from the activists and the academics. One of the academics that has paid a good deal of attention to this issue is an Egyptian scholar named Fathi Osman. This paper is dedicated to explore his ideas, suggestions and conceptions on the issue at hand. It contends that Osman is mainly concerned with the synthesis of Islamic concept and the notion of human right adopted by the international community. The paper exposes Osman?s strategies in pursuing the synthesis, which begins by careful investigation on both Islamic and modern concepts of human right, then followed by identifying the strength and weakness of each concept. This strategy is aimed at gaining a clear idea about how a new concept of human right should be formulated. The paper will also ask whether Osman?s synthesis is both practical and conceptual. By practical, we mean a concept which rooted in the real experiences as far as human rights are concerned. And by conceptual, we mean whether Osman?s ideas are derived from the theoretical analysis of both Islamic sources and the sources of modern idea on human rights.

This paper is about a critical survey of Charles J. Adams? insights concerning the definition and nature of religion. We are particularly interested in digging up the logic and methodological inconsistency of Charles Adams as far as his offer on religious studies is concerned. Initially we were impressed by the power of his allusions. But the deeper we go the more we found out that his thought is replete with methodological incongruence. First, he is not certain about the definition of religion; an uncertainty that leads to a lot of fundamental errors in the description of religion as a whole. Second, he is not sure what line of argument he follows, the fact that leads to confusion whether he is reductionist or anti-reductionist. It is about this confusion that this paper is concerned with. Although a major part of this paper deals with religions in general, its theme and problems are of particular importance to the study of Islam.

This article is about a critical study of the thematic method of the Quran. It studies the nature of the method and provides a critical assessment of it. One of the gaps that the study will try to fill in is the lack of attention being given to the context out of which any particular text was revealed. The thematic approach is not particularly good at looking at the backgrounds of the text. It is this shortcoming that the paper will try to evaluate critically. It argues that the task of any interpreter of a text has been to understand first and foremost the surroundings that shape the text and constitute part and parcel of it. This understanding would determine the nature of the text and help guide the interpreter in the process of interpretation. The meaning of a text can change according to its context. The same word can infer to a different subject also according to the context. The paper will further elaborate this point further so as to give a clear idea that a thematic approach cannot ignore this aspect of exegesis.
